Hardware News   Hardware News : GVP-M and Software Hut Inc. have teamed up for new Amiga boards
   posted by Roj on 27-Apr-2009 13:38:40 (9885 reads)
April 24, 2009 - GVP-M and Software Hut Inc. have teamed up to bring new Amiga boards to the market.

Read more.....

Through a joint effort, GVP and Software Hut are bringing to the Amiga market new accelerators, ram and video boards. Included in this are 060 boards for the 2000 and 4000 model computers as well as an 030 model for the A1200. All of these accelerators use standard 72 pin ram as well. This will be a limited run to gauge the demand in the market. We have tried to price these boards as low as possible taking into account many of them are completed and tested by hand due to small production runs. If the demand is strong, additional items, many of which have been unavailable for some time are planned. Supplies are limited on many of the items. The initial batch of boards and ram are due in stock this Monday, April 27. To see details please visit http://www.softhut.com/gvp

Inquiries can be directed to: sales@softhut.com or by calling 610-793-2354

Those prices, certainly the A1200 board, look pretty good to me!
Good job.

Now Now Be Nice!
The perceived value of the Classics is more powerful than the new PPC AmigaOS4.x platform.

Mainly due to it's proven performance and known success rate!

Most of OS4.x and OS4.x hardware is all new, and not proven in the mass market.

Age = Maturity = Stability = Wisdom, or at least it proves were just big kids! LOL

And this "value" is perceived by whom, actually - a bunch of die-hards with fond memories of a computer that was once famous? (Well, that at least explains why you'd use such lovely euphemisms as "maturity" and "wisdom" while referring to a scrap heap on its way to Silicon Heaven! )

I paid 379 USD for a new Blizzard 1260 back in the day and pre-ordered one of the new Typhoon boards and accompanying SCSI controller a couple weeks ago for my second A1200. I think the prices are great, particularly with a warranty included. The new boards use standard SIMMs, too. (The new run of GVP memory is for older accelerators.)

I also know for certain (well, hope anyway) that these new boards haven't been photographed on someone's old shag carpet for posting on eBay. (When I see that, all I can say is, "WTF?")

And now that my wife has a new Sony VAIO ultra mega mega thing with all the trimmings, I can buy a SAM400ep-flex for myself as well.

Well, it still is But IMHO forking out 850 EUR for a complete SAM-based system with OS4 is much less crazy than spending 500 EUR on a 060 accelerator for the classic.

@Trixie

Where are you getting 500 EUR from? It clearly states on the site it is $445 USD.

http://www.xe.com says $445 USD is about 342 EUR.

@HammerD

Didn't you know? Prices on all Amiga hardware, classic or otherwise, are artificially inflated.

It is?? I think that depends on what this person uses his Amiga for. There are still people who are interested in running classic amiga software for various reasons and this is simply not possible on OS4.1 today unless you run it under e-uae which again is not possible on a Sam due to slow cpu.

@ HammerD

You're right, that was an oversight. Still, that doesn't make the investment any more sensible :)

The number of apps available for classic Amigas outweighs the OS-4 only apps by a factor of what, a hundred? A thousand? Ten thousand?

I daresay there's "more" to do with OS1.3 through 3.9 than there is with poor old OS4.1. Furthermore there's no guarantee of E-UAE compatibility in OS4. So for many folks this is a sound investment.

@Comi

A new PowerPC card wouldn't be of much use without support from Hyperion, and depending on the design, you'd have to involve the authors or current owners of PowerUP and WarpUP for compatibility with legacy software.
