Software News   Software News : WxWidgets bounty opened.
   posted by Troels on 25-May-2009 19:52:10 (7813 reads)

amigabounty.net announces a bounty to get WxWidgets ported to AmigaOS4.1.

UPDATE - 27.05.2009: Alexandre Balaban has been assigned to the bounty and deadline has been changed as agreed with Alexandre. Please consider making a donation to the bounty if you haven't done so already.

Having WxWidgets available on AmigaOS4.1 will help give us easier access to a huge number of cross-platform applications and it will allow AmigaOS4 developers to reach a wider audience if they develop using WxWidgets. A few examples of applications using WxWidgets include: KiCAD, Audacity, Code::Blocks IDE and (originally from the Amiga) Audio Evolution 5.

@andres

I'm currently working on MIDI support. I'm not sure what you mean by 'full' though. Virtual instruments remain a problem, since the powerful commercial ones will never be ported to the Amiga by the 'big' companies. I might support the HD-rec ones if possible.

@ Spotup

By analizing the level meter it looks like DaveAE is playing the tune "back in control"
by the famous grouse........ i mean famous group called "Transplant".

@ DaveAE

Supporting HD-REC plugs would be a good step :) Maybe other people would make
more plugins as it would work for both. Some cooperation for plugins system ?

@DaveAE

Thanks.
For full MIDI support I was meaning a full midi sequencer, with a piano-roll window and its basic feature (editing tools, quantization ecc...)...
About plugins, yes, I know we can't hope in "big companies" port, but could we have a standard like VST?
If so, perhaps it would be possible porting some free VST plugins to Amiga...

Thanks Daniel

@all
As you can see the bounty has now been assigned to Alexandre Balaban (AW nick Abalaban) this is the reason the news was bumped.

Deadline has been changed after agreement with Abalaban as the initial 6 month goal for both wxBase and wxCore seems to have been overly optimistic.
The WxBase part should be finished in 3 months and then we will talk about a deadline for WxCore at that point.

I am really grateful Abalaban wants to work on this, as I know there are a good bunch of coders wanting to see WxWidgets on OS4.1

I couldn't see any mention of it on the "bounty site", but is it a requirement that the port be native, or is it sufficient that it rely on add-ons like Cygnix?

@tonyw

It says "Fully native AmigaOS4.1 port which uses whatever AmigaOS4.1 offers" on the bounty page.

At least I understood it as native, Cygnix port should not have took so much time (this is an assumption : I never looked at the Cygnix SDK and have no idea how much modification need to be done in applications to make them compilable and runnable under Cygnix).

@andres

I'll try uploading a preliminary screenshot tonight. It has a (what I think is called) piano-roll but no 'notation' window (with real notes etc.). Quantization is already working and editing tools are basically working.

If there is source code for VST and VSTi's, it's never a problem to port. It's just that everytime people say that and I ask them to point me to source code of good VST(i)'s, it's always quiet...

@abalaban

I already had an early version of AE5 running under Cygnix with wxWidgets, so that's already working.

Many thanks for picking up this project! I'll donate more the coming months.

Hi Tony

From the bounty site:
Quote:
Fully native AmigaOS4.1 port which uses whatever AmigaOS4.1 offers.
This includes things like the 64bit DOS functions and of course the use of ReAction as GUI Toolkit to get a common look and feel.

This is a rather big project for OS4.1 and more donations are very welcome

Maybe the deadline can be met sooner as I do have a working (afaict) libwxBase.a and could probably recompile it into a libwxBase.so shared object if that's any use.

At least the "Console" sample program compiled and seems to run properly:

Quote:

*** wxFile read test ***
File length: 0
File dump:
----------
# this is the test data file for wxFileConfig tests
value1=one
# a comment here
value2=two
value\ with\ spaces\ inside\ it=nothing special
path=$PATH
----------

*** wxTextFile read test ***
Number of lines: 6
Last line: 'path=$PATH'

Dumping the entire file:
1: # this is the test data file for wxFileConfig tests
2: value1=one
3: # a comment here
4: value2=two
5: value\ with\ spaces\ inside\ it=nothing special
6: path=$PATH

And now backwards:
6: path=$PATH
5: value\ with\ spaces\ inside\ it=nothing special
4: value2=two
3: # a comment here
2: value1=one
1: # this is the test data file for wxFileConfig tests

*** Testing wxCopyFile ***
File was copied ok.

I'm not sure where I got the initial sources for libwxBase and what changes I might have made to it but I probably needed it to satisfy some dependencies because I ported libHorde3D and libglfw a few days later.

@AlexC

then maybe you would want to take over the bounty if you already did some work on it ?
You might contact me by email privately if you want.

EDIT: Rereading your post again I'm not sure you were the author of the libwxbase.a, if you still have the source, please can you tell me what is in the header of amiga/dir.cpp (if this file exists) ?

@ExiE

If porting project is succesful I dont see reason why it could not be ported by someone else to OS3/AROS/MorphOS using MUI. That is, if someone is willing to do so. There can be new bounty on those other platforms or there is someone who ports it on his spare time.

GTK-MUI bounty comes to my mind here. This was AROS bounty and now there is MorphOS bounty to finish MorphOS port based on AROS version.

@Itix

Would be good if AROS and Morphos could benefit from this also but as it will be Reaction based I don't know how much use it will be.

The next bounty we are going to launch is probably of more use to MorphOS, when/if it becomes finished.

@DaveAE

You're right, I know and use several free VST plugins but they're not open source...
Anyway, perhaps, it's possible to contact the authors and ask them if they would give
the code to port a plugin to AmigaOS...
For example::

VST
- some of the effects made for Audacity maybe interesting, even if I don't know them...
- the free Reaper suite, ReaEQ e ReaComp in particular are really very good
http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/index.php

VSTi
- MiniMogueVA and Arppe2600va, two nice free synths that emulate the famous Minimoog and the Arp2600
http://glenstegner.com/softsynths.html

- the famous free synth Crystal
http://www.greenoak.com/crystal/about.html

Here is a work-in-progress screenshot of AE5.1 with MIDI sequencing:

(if you're using IE, make sure to zoom in, otherwise it will look horrible!).
