Announcement   Announcement : BOUNTY: AMP package for AmigaOS4.1 (Apache, MySQL and PHP).
   posted by Troels on 6-Oct-2009 22:00:06 (8936 reads)
This bounty consists of two phases both assigned to AmiCygnix developer Edgar Schwan.

First bounty covers phase one and will bring an up-to-date Apache, MySQL and PHP to AmigaOS4.1 via AmiCygnix.
The package will contain a minimal AmiCygnix installation, so you won't need to install the large AmiCygnix base package.
A bounty of minimum EUR 500 must be reached for Edgar to port these applications.

Read more...

When phase one is complete, we will open a bounty for phase two. Phase two consists of a fully native port of Apache, MySQL and PHP utilising whatever the current version of AmigaOS4.x has to offer. A bounty of EUR 300 must be reached to get the fully native port.

Obviously donated!

Developing web stuff on my Sam will be surely fun as it is so silent!
Together with the Firefox port (and not to forget OWB) our platform will be finally in a good shape on the subject!

Information:

This is web server software, older ports of this packages existed under AOS3, MOS and maybe even under AOS4. The packages usually works without any GFX output, so I am surprised it will need something from Cygwin.

@thread

While I think this is a great idea for development purposes, wouldn't it be a huge security risk to use Apache, MySQL, etc on a live server with no user privilage seperation?

I assume this has already been thought about.

@Mrodfr

AMP contains a webserver (Apache), a database engine (MySQL) and a programming language (PHP). This is the standard configuration used by the most web hosters. So if you create an own homepage using MySQL/PHP, you can run it locally on your Amiga for development.

@Arko

There is no must to use X11 on AmiCygnix!! Unix commandline programs do not need X11 either. AmiCygnix is used because of it's compatibility to Unix.

@bennymee

The main differences:

The programs will be up to date and (for the first time on OS4) it will include a MySQL server.

The current port of Apache only runs only in debug mode because of the missing multi processing support. I want to add this.

For the native version, I want to use dynamic modules. The AmiCygnix version will be a static binary just like the first port.

Also a GUI for maintaining the databases will be included.

Unless you intend to put your Amiga on the net as a live server (which would be a stupid idea IMHO), to develop locally you don't need to make the services run as different users than yours. It's adivsable but not needed.

I also would like to know what's the difference between this bounty and the already available Apache and PHP ports on OS4Depot, as far as i can tell the only missing piece is MySQL (on the depot there's only the client) and bring Apache and PHP up to date... or am i missing something?

@Gleng

This is correct. AmigaOS is not secure enough to host websites. The main goal of this package is development!

@CygnusEd

You will have enough free time for improving amicygnix (speed maybe) and also this package ??? How you will arrive to do that ??

BTW, It's allways a pleasure to have a bounty taken by a developper

I could not speak for MySQL but Apache has it's own ACLs ( Access Controll Lists ) so it should not be possible to do something like "http://myserver.myland/c:/format.c" or "http://myserver.myland/YAM:/Incomming"

I had a WWW page running on an Amiga/Peg with Apache some time, it was amusing to see the script kiddies trying to attack my server.

I disagree, if I need a (L)AMP server, a Linux box is more convenient, documented and supported option.

A MySQL port will also be useful, but I intend AmigaOS not for server use (where Linux/Unix rules). The target for AmigaOS is the desktop, where Linux fails until now (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_desktop_operating_systems)

my 2 cents...

A bounty for something that doesn't require more than a configure/make?

Well, I guess it doesn't matter.
