posted by DiscreetFX on 5-Jun-2011 6:06:48 (7802 reads)
PRESS RELEASE

Date: June 6th, 2011

This announcement already went out by telegraph on accident and is burning up the wires so we are also releasing it here one day early. To Celebrate it's 16th Birthday DiscreetFX is once again helping the Amiga community by Launching Project Metropolis.

http://www.discreetfx.com/ProjectMetropolis.html

What is Project Metropolis you might ask? It is a Instant Download Application Storefront for Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga. We will not only sell our own applications there, we will sell 3rd party programs as well. A very generous revenue share has been setup for the developer and is paid monthly.

3rd Party developer gets 80%

DiscreetFX gets 20%

The application approval process is very easy and the market will decide which apps are good or bad not DiscreetFX. Now, finally customers will have a central place to buy and Instantly Download their Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga apps. Developers can focus on creating their great applications and even games, then be confidant users will actually see them since there will be a quick cloud based solution for customers to buy them.

Welcome to the unified future of buying all your Amiga Os 4.x, MorphOS, AROS & Classic Amiga commercial applications in one place. Free programs are of course available from AmiNet like they have been for many years.

If you are a developer and wish to contact us about this venture please use the link below. Great developers and DiscreetFX partnering together is what will make this a fantastic success.

@DiscreetFX

a few questions for you:

1. do you have any vendors/developers already signed on?
2. did you sign them on prior to launch?
3. did you discuss the initiative with amigakit?
4. the static web page still shows the store launching today -- will it?

best of luck with the venture.

DiscreetFX is based in Chicago, USA as far as I know. They have 15:00 local time there (now, when I'm wrting it), while here in Europe we have 22:00. Then they have some time still . I will just check tomorrow morning...

Really ?

How much does it cost you to distribute classic/OS4/MOS/AROS through, say, Aminet ?

Servers,.. have always costed some money, but only since recently people started to ask money for it... Seeing how much money Apple makes for example by the developer fee of $99 itself *only*, they really don't need to ask 20% from developers in adition to that (just fyi: 99$ is totally free of any taxes, and let's say only 20 000 (actually a lot more developers are working on iOS...) developers pay the fee, that's about 2 million dollars... how much do you think payment handling, servers,... cost ?)

Introducing this kind of money share on the Amiga seems even more crazy... But if people are ready to pay for it, fine. But I still won't agree...

Yes, I've seen the page too. I don't know if it is caused by some last minute bugs spotted, or they want to play amipuzzle with us. The second case would be simply embarrassing...

@Leo

maybe it's the future. Apple is going to sell their new OS only on App Store.

20% seems a bit high, but, maybe they are planning to drop the price once it's self sustainable. I mean as it is ATM, will there be, 2000 users downloading and paying for software? How much will that be, 2$ per user? That's 4000$. Considering they probably have to pay employes to do the work, 20% doesn't sound that expensive.

edit: I forgot: of course Aminet is free, but are people really paying the shareware fee to the developers when downloading SW?

20% is very reasonable IMO, it takes money to make money and currently not many Amiga developers make much money.
An appstore is a great initiative it just has to be simple and easy for the developer to present his software. Ease of use is important for both developer and potential buyer.

Good luck DiscreetFX

With all the respects but, why all your announcements are followed by a delay?

@DisctreFX

Did you have plans to make normal site for it in end ? I mean www.metropolis.com , or www.amiga-metropolis.com , or kind ? Because some link in deep of the discretfx site imho not so good idea. Users and developers should to see professionality there (new site, good design, everything clear / understanable and related to amiga and related stuff only). And then, if all that stuff will alive for at least 1-2 years from the running (without "sorry we close, will be running soon"), then maybe developers and users will starts to use it more and more.

Anyway, for now its only idea, and the final result only (how site will looks like, how all will be done) will make sense. Wish you good luck of course, and wish to do everything proffesionally.

For my imho, proffessionals should do : everything in time, everything clear, with good communication, with good reputation and so on. I am a bit pessimistic about all that stuff already, because for me DiscretFx its company who in last 2 years make only news about nothing, which looks like news for dumbs.

But hope to be wrong in exactly that news and idea , hope they will show us professionalism and not just some fast-idea-which-come-to-mind-while-we-have-nothing-for :)

@Leo

well.... now it is apparently available. if you go to the page, you'll see applications listed below which allow you to purchase them via paypal. the only ones available are from discreetfx. i have to admit that, at the moment, i'm a tad underwhelmed: there's nothing available from third-parties, the sales 'infrastructure' is via paypal, developers pay $30 to upload their software via FTP and, effectively, be given a link on a static web page.

in their FAQ, there are a few items of interest, such as:

Quote:
Q: Is Project Metropolis fully rolled out?

A: No, it has just started, the full implementation will happen in the next three months to a year. Your feedback is of course always welcome and we use it to improve.

which suggests what has been 'launched' isn't the final store. moreover they did not contact any developers prior to their announcement. i'm not sure that bodes well for future success, but it is a concept people have been requesting for some time.

given the paucity of commercial software for our platform(s) of choice, i'm hoping this turns into something other than a page of links and provides a vehicle for additional sales. but for the moment i see no alternative to direct sales from vendors and the likes of amigakit.

best of luck to 'em.

edit: they are having a 72-hour sale to inaugurate their store. aladdin 4D 5.0 is available as an instant download for only $50. has anyone used this recently? is it something worth buying now or should i wait for v6.0 to come out?

LOL, you crack me up. I'll translate that for you:

"My internet shop still offers the same old three apps I've been offering for years".

Here's a minimal how to:

1. Make product
2. Make sure product is finished by double-checking with some sane person
3. Get some European Amiga user to write the PR (please!)
4. Make announcement.

As far as the amount of press releases vs. actual product ratio goes, nobody beats DiscreetFX. In case you wonder: that's not a good thing.

Thanx for your vote of confidence in us.

Aladdin 4D 5.x is an entry level beginners 3D animation package. If that is what you are looking for cool. Aladdin 4D 6.x is the same as 5.x, the only major new feature is Multi-Platform. if you want the latest technology in 3D animation software buy this.

Please take your comments of Apple reseller away from this site...

Here we know perfectly what Apple is...

Nothing than a Great-Brother bunch of losers.

Just two or three examples on about how LAME the Apple firm is:

1) In USA they delete applications from IPhones from remote, just judging from their own will, what an user should install on his own cell phone...

2) They were so afraid of GPL License that last January they cut off any GPL application (Mainly VLC) from their "Great-Brother"-Like APPStore.

http://www.osnews.com/story/24225/No_GPL_Apps_for_Apple_s_App_Store

3) They are so lame that they even sued a poor producer of kitchen cooking gadgets and wooden chopping boards because the design of the chopping board is similar to iPad tablet...

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/02/08/ipad-cutting-board-chopped-down-by-apple/

Apple miss any sense of humor.

They are so touchy about their lame products, that they can't make a little laugh, and keep free this chopping board that resembled the iPad.

Too bad!

The chopping board had had made free advertising for Apple iPad...

It was a nice, tiny and happy product that was harmless for Apple iPad fate and mainly it was harmless for iPad success.

Maybe at Apple thay were afraid that the chopping board could had sold more units than their tablet.

APPLAMEEE!

actually a 'beginners' package sounds good. what i'm looking for would be something that runs natively on my OS4 system. if v5.0 runs natively, i'll probably go ahead and purchase a copy. otherwise i think i'll wait for v6.0.

is there a demonstration version, per chance? thanks for your replies!

Can't believe I'm defending Apple here but:
Quote:

You are aware, that Apple took off the GPL'ed Software because some VLC Devs where in doubt whether the GPL complies with the Terms of the App Store. More precisely one of the VLC Devs filled a copyright infringement to Apple... Here you go. Hardly Apples fault.

While I'm going to wait a few months to see how Metropolis will evolve, I agree with cgutjahr. For now it looks like "how to make a quick 500 dollars on the net" exercise rather than something interesting. If I want to sell any of my programs, I have a hosting, I can design a page not worse than Project Metropolis, I can arrange a PayPal account (in fact I have one already) and put the button on the page, then I can save these 30 dollars + 20%. I hope as time goes Metropolis will have something more to attract me.

Putting together an ugly looking webpage and adding a paypal button
is not rocket science, I've done a few myself

If someone has the skill and will to write software that is useful enough
to be sold to people, he/she for sure can manage this simple task also.

It is not like there is such overwhelming amounts of orders coming in
that some kind of external entity needs to be brought in to handle it.

No, rather it looks like the, not too unusual in certain areas of
amiga-land, method of using some latest hyped up thing to make a few
bucks from simply announcements.
