Not music related, but related to the interface.
I just tried to change the fonts of the applicaion (the topaz font is really too old) but i got only fonts at 8pts availible and nothing else .. so i choose a DeJaVu Sans and i try to change manually the pts of the font atleast at 12 .. but with that the menu in program can't be opened anymore ...

I think it's both a feature to add/imporve (better font support in application) and a bug aswell (can't reopen the menu after choosing another font), please can you look at it ? ..

The original interface to Bars&Pipes Professional was quite advanced for it's time.
Working on an 8 color screen, all of the "advanced" window and GUI handling was
done using a LOT of specialized programming.

The impact that they were able to get with only an 8 color screen was impressive.

But the fonts were hard-coded, and the options for screen resolution did not come anything close to the choices we have today.

I have already made one failed attempt at building a bridge between the classic windows used in BarsnPipes and more modern, font sensitive windows based on ReAction. I lost a good bit of work on that attempt, and had to drop back and rebuild after it failed.

But the groundwork is in place, and there will be more work in that direction.

I expect that the most graphic windows, such as "tracks" and "track edit" will remain pretty close to what they are now, but the requesters and other supporting windows will gradually be moved to modern, font sensitive replacements.

Much the same is happening with graphics. No longer limited to 8 color screens, I look forward to replacing the image loader with bitmap.class. The GUI is already "skinned", and this will open the door for full color skins to be applied to the existing application.

But this release was more about function than form. It included an almost complete overhaul of the camd.library interface, and now is beginning to support the possibility for integration into much larger MIDI environments than we could before. The original MIDI input routines were based on the assumption that nobody would have more than one MIDI input. This was true on the classics for a long time, and even with the "Triple Play" interface only the outputs were tripled. So this took a bit of changing so that we can still support channel-agnostic input OR simultaneous multi-track recording. And it's not just 16 tracks at a time anymore.

The link to a manual was just simply great luck. I visited the bombjack site for the first time, I was grabbing a couple copies of "Amazing Computing", and when I browsed the application section, I found that the Bars&Pipes manuals had been made available just a few days before. I contacted the owner of the page, and he requested that I include a link to his site instead of providing the file.

Big thanks go out to David, and if you have never visited the Bombjack site before, it is a great place to find Amiga books, manuals to Amiga applications, and a VERY complete collection of Amiga magazines. Reading those magazines was like stepping back in time.

Now back to my next project, already in progress.

As the one who originally petitioned Microsoft to release the code, a long time B&P fan and one who's meet Lyle, I say nice job and keep up the work Lyle.

Don't know if I could find it after all these years, but if someone's dead set on doing their own version I may still have a copy the code Microsoft released where you could start anew. However it won't compile without work first and of course does not include later work by Alfred and Lyle.

EDIT: Never mind I don't need to look through my old stuff. Alfred still makes source available on his site which includes his compiler updates....

Thats not the point...

BnP has been OpenSource and any changes should be committed to the repository and as developer you and he should know all this....

Show me the license that says any such thing, and I'll agrree with you. I don't think Alfred has his version of the source in any public repository.

"OpenSource" is not a legal term so it doesn't entail any particular responsibility. It's the licence that counts.

All:

I regret my earlier reply.

I am here to celebrate Amiga, and I intend to continue in my celebration.

I have said many times that we are all here for the same reason: We
love Amiga, or at least enjoy it a lot.

There are many flavors of Amiga, and we are each free to choose which
ones we use.

I think it's important to remember that attacking those with a different
opinion is destructive to the entire community.

Just my two cents.

Hi Lyle,

First, congratulations on your latest release of Bars & Pipes for AmigaOS4.x, and a huge THANK-YOU, for all of your hundreds of hours of work on this port. I just downloaded it and hope to install it very soon on my X1000.

When Blue Ribbon SoundWorks was bought out and for a very limited time was selling the Bars & Pipes manuals with binders, I made sure to get them, with the hopes of eventually learning the program and having some fun making some music on my Amiga computers. Now that you have taken over the port of Bars & Pipes for AmigaOS4.x and actually gotten it to work, I can transfer that dream of learning how to use Bars & Pipes and making some music for fun to my X1000, and I thank you for taking on such a difficult task.

With regards to your apology above, I understand your frustration with the perceived attack(s) by other members here, and why you had a sudden outburst of anger and negativity for a moment. I really appreciate your "Live & Let Live" attitude, and your realization that all attacks on any flavor of the remaining Amiga community is destructive and counter productive for all of us. I strongly agree with that philosophy, and want to thank you for expressing it. I honestly think that most of the problem with anyone asking for you to release your source code, is a misunderstanding, or lack of communication, and not a serious attack on you, or your desire to keep control of your porting work.

Please keep up the great work you are doing, and enjoy every minute of it along the way.

as a member of perceived open source mafia i think it is good when amiga native hardware is actively updated. if there is no explicit license, an apparently there is not (i dont know) this development may stay closed. while i certainly would prefer to have the source and development shared open between our platforms as it is in case of dopus magellan for instance, i realize this takes an additional effort and cant be simply demanded.

@lyle: good work for os4 community, keep it up!

Hi Dave!
It's been a while now, I hope the move went smoothly.

I would really like to believe that all the Amiga communities can co-exist.
Lately those beliefs have been challenged but I'm still here and still coding.

Aren't you living on a lake now? Must be nice.

Wawa,
Since ports of BarsnPipes already exist for all platforms, and the version I have had already been made OS4 specific long before I got it, Trying to make the code I have here "cross platform" would be a train wreck.

And for the rest, I guess haters are gonna hate no matter what I do.

@lylehaze
Thanks for all your hard work on BarsnPipes for OS4.

I use most flavours of Amiga Classic and NG and enjoy them all they all have there good and bad point. I just wish people would stop arguing over which is better and discouraging developers from working on the programs that interest then on the platform of their choice.

As for the sources code you worked on its your work and you don't have a contract/licences agreement specifying that you should release your work for free and in no other field of work would you be expected to so I don't see why people feel the need to argue.

I can see the value in open sources and releasing code too allow other people to work on it but I don't think all programs need to be open source on a closed source platform such as OS4.

Anyway keep up the good work and don't forget to take the time to enjoy using the software you are spending time working on

i think it depends. someone skilled (on other systems) would have to examine it in order to tell. i think there is quite a number of cross compatibilities, i know that aros developers try to keep up with os4 and morphos concepts where possible and reasonable. on the other hand pulling cross platform effort has also trade offs, such as "ifdef" mess and so on. this is also the reason fab does not give his sources completely out of hand. which is about as understandable as your position. this is, so to say, a question of philosophy.

thus said, im speaking just theoretically here. im completely satisfied with hd-rec for my personal needs so far;)

i dont think so. voices may sound harsh, but i think behind there is rather an assumption that the philosophy (like "open source") is generally valid and may be applied, without consideration, as soon as one gets accustomed to it. personally i think in our situation (i think about the whole amiga(like) community), open source guarantees the best chances for preservation (and perhaps further development) of the code-heritage. but thats my opinion, and especially as no-coder i dont feel entitled to impose that on anybody.
