Software News   Software News : mui-mplayer port from morphos to amigaos4 released
   posted by kas1e on 24-Oct-2011 21:16:06 (19712 reads)
Hi all

We with Deniil, with big help from Fab (of course, and as usuall :) ) , release a first version of mui-mplayer port from morphos. Check os4depot for it (in upload query for now).

screenshot

There is many thinks to say, but in brief:

The advantages over the our current os4 port: newer mplayer code, better structurisation and code itself, mui-gui with all the stuff , better integration of streaming (working over bsdsocket.library directly), no SDL, sound over AHI, rendering over cgx_wpa and all the other pluses about which know only Fab as he author.

The minus now only one: No overlay. Because of it, in full-screenmode you have no scalling (to avoid slowdowns). Overlay will be implemented pretty soon (i hope).

If you want command line : use it from the shell

If you want GUI: run from the icon (tooltype GUI). If you disable that tooltype, then from the icon it will just ask for the file which need to open.

PS: its is _NECESSARY_ to have update3 minimum, if you want to use GUI. Or, you need MUI from update3, which you can copy on older version of OS and it will works as well. Through, better to just have update3, to avoid any possible problems.

So as usuall thanks to Fab for his sources, to Thore who works on MUI, to Deniil who help with porting and to DeadWood for some help as well.

So, OS4 Update 3 really helps porting from MOS (and back?)
Great!

@vox
Its all about mui, which since update3 are start to be better, and so, mui4 apps can be ported (through, not that easy as one can think).

Update3 need it only because it have new mui. You also can use mui from update3 on say os4.1 update1 or kind.

(and back?)

While in theory yes, in practive no any kind of "back" at all. Just because its on morphos good and modern apps are present, not on aos4. So its more like "we now can have few good apps from morphos". But sure, if programmer will works now with new mui on aos4, he can use some mui4's features and be sure that it will also works (of course) on morphos's mui4.

@kas1e

Nice work, very much appreciated.

I get a crash in the "MPlayer GUI Thread" if I try to seek within a file with the progress indicator. Couldn't find any information about if this is "normal" for now?

EDIT:
I can provide a crashlog if needed.

Thanks to all of you!

And also nice to see that Deniil has re-found the inspiration to keep up the good work!

You guys are contributing great things to the community.

Best regards,

Niels

Latest mui3 and stuff ? Which file it was ? (i tested personally only with ogg , mp3 and avi). Anyway post of course all the info in the mplayer thread with stacktrace and stuff

I think we also need some bug-tracking on os4depot as with muiowb

MUI-OWB and MUI-MPlayer, are qwe looking at more MUI ports from MorphOS?

Would be nice to see software on MorphOS & AmigaOS4 being developed at the same pace.

Personally I think the ports are great and hopefully there may be more.

Did you have update3 installed ? Did muiowb works for you correctly already (that will mean that mui for you also works correctly) ?

The next (maybe) will be Ambient, but it will be the hardest that MuiOWB (imho).

I would like to see some stuff go the other way (i.e. OS4 to MOS), to help reduce tensions between both "sides", and hopefully engender a more co-operative attitude from both sides (i.e. beyond Fab + Kas1e/etc).

That will be somewhat more difficult for ReAction-based stuff, but with Update 3 it now makes more sense to write MUI GUIs for programs (either as an alternative GUI, or perhaps to replace the ReAction one entirely).

I really hope that does NOT happen, because:

1. Ambient defines MorphOS for many people (even though a historical 'quirk' caused it to be open sourced), so this would surely *really* upset at least some MOS fans, and that is absolutely the last thing I'd want to see. Pretty sure it would reduce chances of co-operation between both "sides", without (IMHO) gaining us that much.

2. To be honest, I actually prefer Workbench + Filer. Yes, it is not as integrated as Ambient, but overall I prefer how Workbench works, and it feels more familiar.

Like for example which one ?:) I can count not so many with reaction gui, which are "interesting": codebench and pftp. What else ?

I am not in politic crap, for me matter just process and ability to have choice from many software.

Good for you. So you will just use WB + Filer, and other ones who want will use Ambient. Another ones will use HyperBench.

Dunno for now .. Maybe CGX emulation for sam460 somehow works different ? Or maybe it crashes by some reassons because of "lastvisitedpath" in config.. Try to hard-reboot, then go to mplayer/conf direcotry, and delete "lastvisitedpath" file, maybe will helps

@zerohero
Btw, i forget that i strip the binary, so it will be hard to generate normal crashlog (will upload next version without striping)

Just crashes on startup for me on my sam440ep 666MHz mini-itx with a Guru Meditation 80000004 Task "mplayer"
I am using OS4.1 Update 3 and even downloaded it with OWB-MUI so I don't think I have any MUI issues

Thanks for the port and hopefully the next version will work on my system

Edit: added more system details as signature not displayed on news posts
