After "The ultimate challenge launched by Commodore United States" to the Amiga community, an independent blog has been created to meet this call - Amiga-Poll.

The blog consists of a series of polls that give a picture of what could be the new Amiga.

Although theres been alot of fluff about this company, I do see if they listen to the existing amiga community and partnership with Hyperion/A-eon I would welcome a new CUSA product for the community. Just No OS running another OS solution

Good that the first poll is live, to scratch the surface of the matter.
But IMHO, my way would be the better way.

IMO, we can use a few weeks to figure out what we want, first baby step is taken.

Update:
Could we agree that in two weeks we should look at results and start next round with more details.
And future polls could/should be more muiowb friendly + mobile friendly.

And merry Christmas everybody + soul !

it is a first step but my idea to have a Natami with addon-card and OS ports is not available there and it seems to be constructed by a OS4 fan. I hope that the people see this as chance to reunify the community and not create the split again...

I voted, but it is missing FPGA options.

I think we seriously need to get real here.

C-USA has no staff and no experience in getting a motherboard built. Whatever we ask them to build needs to be easy, small and cheap just to see if they're actually capable of delivering a product as requested (yes, they've produced the C64x case, but we honestly have no idea how long that took from inception to delivery, except that it must have been way overdue because it should have been ready to ship when the Tron advertising was done).

Also, nobody in their right mind is going to give any Amiga-orientated company any money to hold for an unknown period of time. Who would hold it anyway? What about transaction fees, who covers them in the case of refunds and payments?

The more I think about this, we need a list of possible ideas that C-USA feel they are capable of producing using their current resources and in a reasonable amount of time. We then remove the ones we feel they're not capable of achieving and vote on the remaining choices.

We know they can make cases. We know they can put motherboards in cases. It seems that the choices boil down to 2 main options: Empty replacement cases (for whatever product wins the vote - NG or Classic mobo) or "Computer in a Case" based on their case design and an existing PPC or FPGA solution.

Anything else is pie-in-the-sky unless we still want to be debating this in 24 months.

"C-USA has no staff and no experience in getting a motherboard built."

They would use external R&D resources + manufacturing.

"who would hold it anyway?"

I read escrow (or whatever) somewhere. I imagine it's a third party bank/investor organisation. C= would not get a cent untill they deliver.

In my mind they could&would pay ACube/Varisys/bplan or some industry prototyping firm to do the manufacturing, etc. Similar with SW, Hyperion for AOS4 stuff, some other for OpenOfficeLite etc...

To me it seems C= is ready to risk 100 000 USD or something like that. Huge opportunity for our niche. (the second big opportunity, as a matter of fact, TrevorD & Co have already burnt similar amount of money to get x1000 done)

Some original info:
from forum: "Realistically, what could CUSA possibly do now to improve the "Amiga" situation to your satisfaction?"
Commodore Challenge: "The community must definitively decide, through polls or whatever, what exactly it wants a Commodore AMIGA from Commodore USA to be."

I like this pool. It should show CUSA what old and new Amiga users want / like / need / would buy etc. I hope this will help finally Amiga to become recognizable brand again.

Amiga OS, is that 3.9 or 4.x?
Why no laptop option (probably most sold formfactor atm.)

Yup and not even a good one at that...

What kind of real company needs to ask people it said on numerous occasions were "not their target market" to create polls for them and basically come up with a free business plan to try and keep them afloat...

It'll all end in tears for anyone dumb enough to be conned by this latest bout of free CUSA advertising/ propaganda...

Initially (considering how small Amiga is today) I hoped for different companies to join their efforts (yes even CUSA at first) toward a common goal.
The Latter should be to bring back a platform that is alternative to the mainstream ones in both HW and OS (isn't diversification the spice of life? Do we really need another me too clone of something else?).

Maybe the current AmigaOS team coul provide the technology while other companies could help with distribution, advertisment and low cost production.

But then again, Cusa actions spoke not so well about them, so what to make of this? A gimmick? A scam? Or an attempt to redeem themselves? Time will tell.

One thing is certain: no PCs with Linux! and that's quite agreeable even in this litigious community...

a) this set of poll miss some quite important options
b) serious poll should be only the last part of quite long process started with discussion.
c) making poll after poll will devalue whole discussion

...do something in rush can make more harm than good.

The poll seems to targetting a new PPC-Computer. That is not realistic in 6 months and with the (limited) resources available. And there are already plenty of different hardware (soon) available like X1000, FPGA Arcade, Natami, the computer from Acube, PPC-Macs (MorphOS) and PCs (Aros). So we need in my view no complete new system. It is more important to connect the different platforms (f.e. make all OSs on most of these platforms available except ports of AmigaOS and MorphOS to X86 because of the cost). There is PPC-Emulation for X86 but I do not know if it is possible to emulate a complete environment similar to UAE).

In the choice of this poll I miss FPGAs in combination with PPC-Addons...

@ExiE

IMO: we need several polls to form all details

This poll is heavily biased to benefit OS4 supporters.
AmigaOS is taken to mean OS4 only, and no OS3 choice is available.
And as OlafS25 says, FPGA options have been largely ignored by the poll maker.

AOS 4.0 is the naturel succesor to AOS 3.0 - which is the naturel succesor to AOS 2.0 which is the naturel succesor to AOS 1.0 (workbench)

Are you saying we should cut off 10 years work to support 3.0 ??? - now that would indeed be a big step forward

I'm pretty sure he's saying AOS 4.0 users are simply not the only users in the community. If I was to guess I would say classic users out number all of the NG systems.

IMHO what we (community) needs/wants is Software, not more hardware.
Xmos support, SMP, and high quality applications to use current hardware at least at same level we had on Amiga4000 era, you know, Lightwave, TV Paint, Scala, Wordwoth, Final Calc, Real 3D, Imagine, [add here you favourite apps]

Let me say again: IMHO
