hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Interview with Mr Adam Kowalczyk - ACK Software Controls.
posted by shoe on 30-Nov-2005 19:16:01 (33757 reads)
It was back in December 2004 when we heard about the plans from ACK Software Controls on PowerPC-based expansion-cards for the Amiga 1200. A year has now passed and no one seem to have heard anything from ACK regarding these cards. Are the plans put on hold, or even canceled? Many questions without answers, only silence. So SAFIR decided to put on the Sherlock hat and took out the magnifying glass to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Enjoy the full article in English, Spanish and of cource Swedish.

[Edit 06-Dec-2005]
I'm glad to let you know that ACK Software Controls will indeed produce graphics cards for the PowerVixxen LT, and provide full specs for 3rd party developers.

Adam also verifies that the card works with the Mediator bus board.

A big thanks to the SAFIR-crew for helping out, especially tomazkid for the English translation and Jonas for fixing my broken HTML, also Hugo Espińeira for the Spanish translation.

"The first SharkPPC G3/G4 cards for developers will be available by end of November, with production planned to commence in January 2001."

Present
"Production of SharkPPC cards will start as soon as the final version of AmigaOS4.0 for A1 is released."

Keeps that off my must read list

My guess is Troika will cancel further work on the Amy to classic interface card

Eh, this was new to me. Must have missed it, got a thread?

And I don't think that the Troika guys and Adam are strangers so this probably didn't come as a surprise to them..

They must have made some prototype SharkPPC boards.

...but never send them to anybody - well at least not to the "key developers", Hyperion. Just look at Rogues post.

This present Elbox statement has been well known for a long time. Here is the similar statement of Elbox from 26 June 2001:

"As we have explained many times, we will start producing SharkPPC G3/G4 and ShakPPC+ cards when AmigaOS 4.0 is ready for releasing."

So give them a break! It's not their fault that OS4 is not ready yet. They do a great job for Amiga!

It's not my fault that the two statements that I quoted from their news-page are contradictory.

Since the two statements that I quoted are more recent than yours, it seems as if they have changed their opinion about the release date of the Shark twice.

Sorry. After 111 comments I almost forgot what his thread was about.

For Elbox speculation go here:

(btw, funny to see that the ACK-news was announced in that "Elbox-thread" )

I was so glad that I could be running OS4 on my towered 1200 but now I'm contemplating putting it back in it's case (if I can get it back together again) and wind up with a more powerful/compact design that will also run OS4. The mind boggles!

It wasn't

I just wrote that something was coming, but it wasn't the Elbox-interview.

Some people just happened to guess correctly

Nice indeed. If this does materialise, I'll definitely get one. My PPC A1200 has been ever so dormant recently, mainly due to the instability issues I've had with it. It's fine for email, IRC and the like, but nothing heavy. I never did get a rock solid system, flawlessly running 3D apps and the like.

As I've just come into some money, I'm sure I could empty some notes from my wallet on this.

I really am gagging to join the OS4 bandwagon.

Steve

Can someone tell me why he is building this for the A1200?

It strikes me that as he is not really doing anything with the original hardware or OCS, having it's own onboard memory and graphics on the miniPCI card.

Why can't he put it in the A500 trapdoor?
There's are probably a hundred times more A500s than A1200s and they're much easier to come by used/second hand. Besides which, if they blow up, they're common enough that you wouldn't feel so bad gutting them, and putting this in there by itself.

Yes, new 1200s can be bought, but how many could there be? Once this comes out.....None!!!

Ok. Going back to my happy place now.
We have no hotdogs!!! Oh wait....but they're really really tiny.
