hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Interview with Mr Adam Kowalczyk - ACK Software Controls.
   posted by shoe on 30-Nov-2005 19:16:01 (33344 reads)
It was back in December 2004 when we heard about the plans from ACK Software Controls on PowerPC-based expansion-cards for the Amiga 1200. A year has now passed and no one seem to have heard anything from ACK regarding these cards. Are the plans put on hold, or even canceled? Many questions without answers, only silence. So SAFIR decided to put on the Sherlock hat and took out the magnifying glass to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Enjoy the full article in English, Spanish and of cource Swedish.

[Edit 06-Dec-2005]
I'm glad to let you know that ACK Software Controls will indeed produce graphics cards for the PowerVixxen LT, and provide full specs for 3rd party developers.

Adam also verifies that the card works with the Mediator bus board.

A big thanks to the SAFIR-crew for helping out, especially tomazkid for the English translation and Jonas for fixing my broken HTML, also Hugo Espiñeira for the Spanish translation.

@amigakit, our pleasure.

@PowerUP,

"Lots of words but still no pictures of anything."

I too wanted to get a picture of the actual board, but Adam is extremly hard to get too these days. With multiple projects in the works I'm glad we had the chance to clear this part up for now. He had some pics but that was of an older model and he thought that would lead to some confusion.

@Shoe

At least we got the interview

The estimated price of this board is very nice indeed.
I remember when the first Phase5 accelerators came, the BPPC was 3 times this much.

@ shoe

Doesnt matter if its from an older revision. But it is something you can see and believe.

>it was great news until i read about the 512mb [...] it is much better with a ram slot

The chip supports 32bit Ram - regular Dimms are 64bit, though.

I don't see any sense to develop new hardware to classic amiga :(

1. What happend when your a1200 dies?
2. It woun't be that speedy than any new mobo
3. byers would anyway run PPC software! With rusty old a1200 limiting speed?

It would have been great if there was a real -interview-.
Although it is well written, I would have preferred to read what Adam actually said.

You buy either a new one (still available) or a used one (cheap, plenty available).

No. This is about being enthusiastic about something. Not about benchmarks.

There are plenty of people running PPC software with 166Mhz PPCs on classic Amigas. Why won't they want to do the same on 400/433 Mhz ones?

Actually this may be a very good way to get some hardware to run OS4 now. There are still quantities of new A1200s available. That coupled with this card at under $500 would be an excellent stop gap and the machine would look totally Amiga rather than being in a horrible PC case.

I hope it gets released.

No.
I was just saying that I prefer "real" interview-style.

Please explain - I have no idea what you mean by "double booking".

Great news. I hope they'll make a similar board for the A3000.

Be realistic. Chances are high that it does not even get released for the A1200.

If you actually read the interview, you'd know that " Something worth a mention is the design of a terminator, which features among other things sockets for mouse, keyboard, sound and so on. This means in reality that one does not need an A1200 to use the card. With the right case one suddenly gets a luscious, energy-efficient, cheap and effective little Amiga."

Seems like a perfect solution to me if you want to upgrade your 1200 while it still works.

Nice idea, although I don't care about the A1200 aspect anymore - I don't like tying new hardware to really old hardware. Let me keep the old hardware doing old hardware things ...

Anyway, Freescale say they're going to release a 600MHz version of this chip. Stick that on a board with a PCI Radeon chip with DVI output (VGA via dongle or additional), TV out, IDE or SATA controller and I'll be interested. Of course, the low cost comes from being a SoC integrating CPU, NIC, IDE and USB amongst other things. Or overclock it and put on a heatsink, lol.

The internal PCI addon card standard for laptops. Electronically it's 32bit PCI, with a couple extra signal lines to route to modem or ethernet ports on the mainboard. Physically, it's 70mm by 42.5mm, and no more than 7.5mm from connection surface of mainboard to top of tallest component on the MiniPCI card. Tiny... Yet still twice as big as the newer Mini-PCI-Express cards.

Hokey Smokes!
If this actually come to market, put me down for one. I would like one for my 4000 more than my 1200, but maybe I will have to buy one of each. Especially the second gen 466mhz card for the 4000.

And you say I can buy some add ons for a stand alone micro Amiga?! That is just too cool. If that comes to pass, there will finally be an amiga desktop in the ocean of 5000+ windows workstations at the company I admin for. I hope there is more than another news article in another year. What is with this mini-pci slot? What kind of video card will fit that? Can you put a mini to standard adapter on and plug in
a regular pci gfx card?

@utri007

Did you miss the part about this working as a stand alone Amiga?
That would mean you could ditch the 1200 if true.

What nobody mentioned yet. Does it run with standard A1200 PCI expansions ? e.g. the Mediator ? So, you can still use a Voodoo3 or anything else ? Is the Mediator supported by the OS4 expansion.library yet ? If so, all OS4 drivers would run with that combination, too. (e.g. SIL, Radeon, SB, etc). Interessting.
