hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Interview with Mr Adam Kowalczyk - ACK Software Controls.
posted by shoe on 30-Nov-2005 19:16:01 (33264 reads)
It was back in December 2004 when we heard about the plans from ACK Software Controls on PowerPC-based expansion-cards for the Amiga 1200. A year has now passed and no one seem to have heard anything from ACK regarding these cards. Are the plans put on hold, or even canceled? Many questions without answers, only silence. So SAFIR decided to put on the Sherlock hat and took out the magnifying glass to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Enjoy the full article in English, Spanish and of cource Swedish.

[Edit 06-Dec-2005]
I'm glad to let you know that ACK Software Controls will indeed produce graphics cards for the PowerVixxen LT, and provide full specs for 3rd party developers.

Adam also verifies that the card works with the Mediator bus board.

A big thanks to the SAFIR-crew for helping out, especially tomazkid for the English translation and Jonas for fixing my broken HTML, also Hugo Espiñeira for the Spanish translation.

Eeek, double thread ahoy.

@Mods: any chance of combining these before we get another forked thread?

Could this be the "Mistery Device"?

Even though I already have a uA1 I might consider getting one of these for my
A3000 (if they decide to produce them) as a backup.

Maybe Adam could consider to change the name for the German market (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commodore_VIC-20 why Commodore chose a different name for the VIC-20)

I think that Zylesea would be offended that another advertizement has made it onto AW.net...

Sounds interesting. I'm curious to learn what sort of graphics might become available on a MiniPCI card to fit the thing. They're neat, I found one in a dead network router I took apart for no real reason, and them's is TINY! I look forward to seeing what they can fit on one of those.

I've seen adaptors from MiniPCI to regular PCI32, I wonder if it could be possible to use one of those with whatever gaphics card they make for this thing in an XE/Micro board or big-box classic PCI bridge like Prometheus or Mediator until an A3000/4000 accelerator is made for it...

it was great news until i read about the 512mb that was fixed on the board, if this wasnt enough... you got a pci port for a pci gfx card... it is much better with a ram slot and a fixed gfx chip on board... getting ram aint a problem but geting old pci gfx cards is. fitting a gfx card and a hd will sure give heat problems, if its possible to get a big voodoo card in a a1200 case at all...

Heck, finding a regular PCI graphics card will be easy pickings compared to finding a MiniPCI graphics card. has anyone seen anything other than modems and wireless network cards, or the occasional bluetooth widget available in MiniPCI format? We're going to be buying custom cards from ACK.

I'm not complaining, as I understand that's what will fit into an A1200 original case, and a traditional desktop (even low-profile) desktop PCI card simply won't go in there without some major hacking. I think it's wicked cool to make such a thing, and I wish the PC laptop market had done more with MiniPCI for years. I'd even toyed with the idea of a Zorro card similar to Mediator/Prometheus that would have had a number of MiniPCI slots on it instead of desktop PCI cards (something akin to how PicassoIV was originally marketed before Village Tronic dumped it, but not necessarily anything already integrated to thething liek PicassoIV's graphics was), but then didn't want to have to make all the little cards for it myself and the PC laptop market didn't do it for me. Hopefully the MiniPCI-Express format will have more variety, but those things are even half the size of MiniPCI...

As for the 512MB memory limit, I'm not concerned about that. It's a low-performance CPU compared to today's consumer computers, so I wouldn't expect I'd myself be doing any high-end tasks on one. Not high-end software running, then huge memory capacity expandability doesn't seem as important. Heck, I've only got 256MB in my XE and it hasn't given me any grief about it. Besides, as time moves on, it could get difficult to get RAM that would be compatible. Try finding an SDR stick compatible with MicroA1... They're out there, but not necessarily convenient or cost comparable to same capacities of today's popular memory format. If custom memory modules might become necessary, it might as well be part of the accelerator.

Besides, you need main system memory. You wouldn't necessarily require a graphics card directly connected here, as some people will have towered A1200's with Mediators and might like a somewhat higher performance PCI card than what could cost-effectively be put on each and every accelerator manufactured. ACK's way lets Mediator users have some choice, lets original-casers use something better than AGA if they wish, or lets any user use nothing mroe than AGA if they wish to spend their cash on other accessories instead of graphics if they don't need more than AGA.

Or for the budget concious amongst us, buy the accelerator, live with AGA's limitations temporarily while they save up for the graphics widget. While using fancy graphics with the new CPU but no accelerator memory until finances allow could be a less pleasant interim experience than slow graphics but good CPU and a good amount of fast memory.

And who knows, maybe they'll be able to make a couple different variations of graphics widgets. I'd be happily suprised if they do and won't get my hopes up, but I'd rather be able to upgrade from Radeon 7000 to Radeon 9200 as an example instead of from 256MB to 1GB of main memory. (Wishful thinking)

I see 3 pictures onthe english page. One of the CPU chip, one of an Amiga 1200, and one of a MiniPCI slot on some unrelated motherboard.
