hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : Interview with Mr Adam Kowalczyk - ACK Software Controls.
posted by shoe on 30-Nov-2005 19:16:01 (33339 reads)
It was back in December 2004 when we heard about the plans from ACK Software Controls on PowerPC-based expansion-cards for the Amiga 1200. A year has now passed and no one seem to have heard anything from ACK regarding these cards. Are the plans put on hold, or even canceled? Many questions without answers, only silence. So SAFIR decided to put on the Sherlock hat and took out the magnifying glass to get to the bottom of this mystery.

Enjoy the full article in English, Spanish and of cource Swedish.

[Edit 06-Dec-2005]
I'm glad to let you know that ACK Software Controls will indeed produce graphics cards for the PowerVixxen LT, and provide full specs for 3rd party developers.

Adam also verifies that the card works with the Mediator bus board.

A big thanks to the SAFIR-crew for helping out, especially tomazkid for the English translation and Jonas for fixing my broken HTML, also Hugo Espiñeira for the Spanish translation.

Here on my desk. I'll let her go for ... oh... about $20,000 USD.

Thanks for the offer, but I prefer a new one.
Quite funny (well, in fact sad), you can buy A1200 brand-new while AmigaOnes aren't available.

Don't forget us A4000 users. I have an A1200 but I'd surely prefer a version for my A4000 with true PCI (X? ) slots and more expansion options like a CPU socket.

Of course we are. Nothing changed there.

An important question in my mind is how to change the crop of naysayers, skeptics and complainers into paying customers. I think for the most part people will buy in once magazine reviews appear but I also expect a few to remain with their old box and complain about whatever hardware is developed 'til the end of time. There is a market but the right product for the right price has yet to show IMHO. The Vixxen looks like it may just be the right combination to take what is left of the classic market one last time.

Back on topic, I can't wait to give one of these boards a spin especially if an A1200 dongle is not required.

I am an Amiga 1200 user myself and I would rather have ACK than anything else. First of all, I get to use my A1200 and show off to people about the most versatile computer in this planet earth, I could easily disable ACK without removing it and run it in 68k mode, it feels like a beautiful ARCADE CONSOLE toy where I can remove a card, install another card and bang I get a whole new system with different configuration, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee that is hot. Thirdly, this will replace the fantasy case design prospect because now I can finally run OS 4.0 in my A1200 case (desktop) which by the way is a very hot case and small, portable and weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! Fourthly I can watch movies now at the comfort of my very own television,I get to use Paula isntead of a sound card to watch movies, listen to musics, and play games, it will the most compatible Amiga system ever for both the classic and the PPC (thanks to WHDLOAD of course ) Anytime i can switch between AGA mode (real, not emulation, or use the famous reliable kickstart 3.1) or go to the PPC mode, I could to use the RF. Composite output from the A1200 motherboard and I can use the reliable disk drive without the need to get a catweasel. I believe ACK is not only something a dream I want it to come true but a cure to all our problem and the economical price, that is perfect. When we have a tase of what the OS 4.0 will give us and we want double the speed, i.e, 800 Mhz or even 1 Ghz then we can run and get troika or A1, think about it, have a sample of the juice before buying the bottle is not a bad idea and that is what ACK would do.

Hitback spoke thus:

Could this be finally the making of a Amiga Laptop? It seems, little Vixxen LT, may presented the poteintial. And The price is awesome there can really be no excuses now with this entry level board.

I totally agree, this could be an interesting project to have a go at!

It's certainly got me thinking, especially looking at the Mini-PCI to PCI converters.
I wonder how much work would be needed to rotate the PCI slot through 90 degrees to make it flatter?

Of course we'd need to have a look at where the Mini-PCI slot is situated on the board first.

I'll be keeping an eye on this for sure!

Best Regards,

Crumpster

@Crumpster

If you just use a miniPCI graphics card it already IS flat, so the laptop idea certainly seems doable. If you go for the miniPCI to MXM converter idea then you already have all the correct outputs for a laptop (DVI, VGA, internal TFT) right there. Weeee!

Nice to see that the project is moving forward. It would be pretty sweet if this product came out in the end. I really hope that everything goes well for Adam.

Hmm.. I will definatly buy one, but i've got an suggestion:
If the miniPCI slot is meant for a gfx card then why don't route the signals to an miniAGP slot. THen at least there're some "up to date" gfx cards available.

just my 2 cents

Some mini AGP cards

@geen_naam

You call ONE M10 based card "some up to date gfx cards"?

Is there a converter for A600 keyboards to normal keyboardconnectors?
I'd love to put this baby in an A600 if it fits.

There's no AGP on the CPU, only PCI. There's no point in designing bridging logic for an AGP slot that will only run at PCI speed, when the same graphics chip can do PCI native itself.

MiniPCI will be the cheaper solution. AGP doesn't make sense for the given CPU.

I've never heard of mini-AGP before. Sortof interesting to look at...

This is brilliant.
I now need one for my A1200, A3000 & A4000.

For those complaining about the memory been soldered on board, this is an embedded CPU and can ONLY address 512MB of ram, so it is already max'ed out.

Cheers,
Tim
