I think we will see a new Soap Opera soon, Days Of Our Amigas. Must say the Amiga platform is a like a really strange soap opera but would probably do well at 1PM Time Slot Monday through Friday.

Think I will go see if KMart has some Amiga Depends because all of this craziness has given me the runs.

I can't help thinking that the CUSA deal and now this, are all just part of a long-term plot to devalue the Hyperion win (the AmigaOS name) as much as possible, and thus eventually to put Hyperion out of business.

Wasn't there a clause in the Agreement that promised they wouldn't do that?

You've got to admit, it's quite funny.

You'll be able to buy an Amiga branded toaster next

I sympathise with the poster who suggested abandoning the Amiga brand and having some other name for AmigaOS and AmigaOne.

This is done already and is named MorphOS...

BTW indeed both Hyperion and A-Eon sites seems to be down. I guess it is a pure coincidence however.

I see 2 possibilities: Trouble with the known bodies or website preparation for the big launch of X1000.

Hope to know more soon.

"seeing the Amiga brand return to the forefront of consumer electronics and personal computing"

I understand the personal computing aspect here, but consumer electronics? Was there ever an Amiga TV before? An Amiga radio? Phones? I could understand the reasoning if Amiga had ever been a brand like Phillips, Aiwa, Lg etc. but honestly, it hasn't.

@Thom_Holwerda

That is precisely the correct expression. I couldn't find how to put it in words.

@#6

'Our license agreement with Amiga Inc. is an exclusive worldwide trademark license for All-in One keyboard computers, and a non exclusive license for other form factors, accessories, software and peripherals, all of which will be produced and distributed by Commodore USA, LLC.'

Wow. So that means anyone else - as long as it isn't an all-in-one keyboard PC (but presumably an all-in-one monitor PC as iContain are trying to bizarrely sell 'quotes' for) can also set up a deal with AInc. and sell PCs with stickers on.

That doesn't protect your brand much CUSA. If by some freak of nature people are interested in buying PCs with Amiga stickers on then someone else can come along and buy another license undermining all you have achieved.

I wonder why AInc didn't try this nonsense years ago -like when it actually may have made a difference instead of now when the Amiga brand is almost completely forgotten and useless and been dragged through the mud more times than mud itself..

Credit to #6 for finding this cool article on OSNews.

There is a statement of CUSA's CEO here:

The only way you will get support is to announce the rebuilding of the Amiga - stickers on PCs won't work.

Look at it this way Todd. Say I really loved the Mini from before BMW bought the brand and very successfully relaunched it (a popular car here in the UK). BMW did it right - they invested huge amounts and built an entirely new vehicle which built on the strengths of the original brand.

What you are suggesting (same as with CUSA) is the equivalent of BMW buying the Mini brand and slapping it on a load of existing cars.

--- Offering nothing different than what is already available. --- This is a key point.

If VW had taken the Beetle brand and instead of building a whole new car and simply put it on the Polo you would get similar derision from the fan base and a very unsuccessful product.

To take this a step further what AInc. are doing is allowing almost ANYBODY to buy a license for the brand. Can you imagine what it would do to a brand like Mini to have BMW - Ford - GM and everyone else doing their own take as well?

Crazy - except for AIn.c who make another short term buck on the license deal.

The guy from iContain...

This whole thing is just ridiculous...

Note: i might be wrong but pinging Hyperion and A-eon (both 213.133.108.237) websites shows that their hosting provider might be having some kind of problem...

@Thom Holwerda

Yes, my initial reaction was that. Then I saw the funny side. You wrote a good article on it, though, and I would first like to thank you for not filing it under the 'Amiga' topic. I think we all appreciate that a lot.
My only point contrary to your article is that this isn't necessarily a disaster for the AmigaOS.

As far as the amiga branded PC situation is concerned, the worst has already happened. We are going to have to deal with the existence of amiga PCs and find some way to move forward with much of the nostalgia market being soaked up by these branded PCs anyway, whatever happens with I-Contain. Worst case is that they simply dilute the amiga PC brand, leaving us with an undiluted AmigaOS brand.

Assuming of course that these brands are still relevant at all, which is by no means certain given MOS & AROS.

It is probably also worth remembering that I-Contain did ask Aminet (?) for advice on how to get along with the existing fanbase. Its a big 'if', but they might be able to foster more positive 'old community' relations than CUSA have.

@number6

So, Barry has said he isn't surprised and has confirmed that his license is only exclusive for keyboard computers. To me this suggests that I-Contain is at least as legitimate as he is. Probably more.

I do have one question, though, aimed at Leo the CTO: what happened to all that 'we are Amiga now' talk?

C=USA's position is, in my opinion, embarrassed and ridiculous.
In the end, the problem is for them, as the mark "AMIGA" is becoming useless and devalued.
There's going to be a lot of confusion.

Are these "keyboard computers"? I don't think so.
http://www.commodoreusa.net/CUSA_Amiga1000.aspx
Where's the keyboard?

Hyperion is an OS company: they must ignore this ridicolous confusion and concentrate on AmigaOS, the only value left.
