Software News   Software News : New Sputnik Beta released!
   posted by Zardoz on 10-Mar-2007 0:53:56 (6528 reads)
The second beta of Sputnik has been released for MorphOS.

It can be found on the project's website.

Sputnik is a KHTML-based browser for Amiga-like systems, currently only available for MorphOS but an AmigaOS4 port is looking more and more likely.

This new version supports cookies, file downloading, fast-links, SLL, spoofing and significantly improves stability.
It requires the latest released MUI beta (22/9/2006) and a fairly up to date version of the Ambient desktop.

Note that this software is still under development, many features you would expect from a browser might be missing and you should read the documentation before using it.

You missed some stuff! Marcik states
"Lots of changes. Cookies, SSL, downloading files, spoofing, stability, fastlinks, etc, etc."

Edit: AMiGR, you missed out SSL and spoofing.. SSL is an important feature, it should be in the news item..

Edit2: I've just made my second donation. We gotta get this software on OS4! I urge all OS4 users who are sick of websites being displayed wrong to get behind this effort!

The bounty amount hasn't been updated in over a week. I wonder what it's up to now?

OT:
There have only been 2 more donations since last update, I will update when I get home from work.

More donations are VERY welcome.
Actually I'm a bit dissapointed, not with the size of the collected donations, but the number of donations is a bit low IMHO.

@Marcik
Nice to see some progress, keep up the good work!

I have donated once already but dont have any hardware. I will make another donation again if and when there is any new news about the release of any hardware for OS4. But i hope the donations will keep coming in.

There are considerable funds tied into "failed" bounties that just sit unused and collect dust: those 10,000$ für amizilla (hopeless case) or 3000$ for FreeAVD (developer lost interest after collecting). Sponsors who have invested into failed bounties could demand that their money is routed directly towards a promising project. Doesn't cost more than a mail to try.

Is this an objective fact or just your assumption?

are you sure?

I've some private emails where Jamie Krouger says that he hasn't ceased amiga development and, from bitbybit website:
Quote:
I have by no means closed my software company, stopped programming for the Amiga, or given up on the AVD project.

May be you should give us (and to Jamie Krouger )more details about your post.

Not to poop in anybodies Muslix here, but I remember him saying that he really wasn't interested in an OS4 version. I understand that he has commented about seeing if there is enough interest, but did he actually confirm that he *would* port to OS4 if the bounty is reached? Did he confirm this?

Of course, the bounty is not something set up without asking him first. He named the price.

@dietmar

For FreeAVD, Jamie Kreuger asked for $3000 USD to commit to development. This has happened and he stated that he will make FreeAVD. However, in order to work on FreeAVD/AVD full-time he'd need 300 people to sponsor FreeAVD developement at $10/month each. So far, only 17 people have decided to sponsor him. AVD/FreeAVD is a huge project. The only reason he managed to make so much progress already is because he could work on it full-time. Not anymore. $170/month is not enough to keep the lights on. Therefore he's no longer working on it full-time. He's still working on it though.

@Hans

Sure (and since we allready offtopic), but how realistic was/is the idea of making a living programming Amiga ? Even more if one restricts himself to 1 flavour of Amiga .....

But enough of that, Sputnik is looking good, but still has some more miles to go before it's really finished (and the OS4 part would start). So stll enough time to fill up that bounty.

@Dietmar

I am aware that people are skeptical towards bounties and with a good reason. The Amizilla effort with no deadline seems dead and no updates are given. Not a great way to do a bounty IMHO.

FreeAWD is another matter afaik. But I think theres a thread here somewhere covering that.

I still have $50 in Amizilla. Perhaps they should have considered putting it into a savings account. It would even be growing by itself.

If I'm correct there are still two dependencies (TTE2, MUI) that are out of control of the Sputnik team?

As soon as they have been resolved, I'm willing to donate $50.

There was a January notification that development has been stopped, three months after collecting a significant bounty. Stated reason was that not enough users are purchasing OS4 software. Good reason (and very true) - but a daring excuse so shortly after raising a bounty. It can not have been a sudden discovery that we are few, that was obvious before. Bounty should be refunded. In the case of the Sputnik bounty, it all goes through an escrow, that's a much better setup.
