Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Efika now at $99
   posted by adiaux on 21-May-2007 13:06:55 (12135 reads)
In this press release Genesi announces a price drop of their Efika motherboard to $99.00 (¤75.00).

At $99 you get the MorphOS 2.0 capable Efika motherboard, built around the Freescale MPC5200 System on Chip processor running at 400MHz with 128MB of 266MHz DDR RAM, on-board sound with both internal and external audio connectors (including an optical S/PDIF out connector), one 10/100Mbit/s Ethernet connector, 2x external USB1.1 connectors, one PCI slot or optional AGP slot on a riser card (included), and an on-board 44-pin IDE connector for an optional 2.5" HDD.

The price is for the motherboard alone, but it is also available in a few configurations of pre-built systems, as seen in the Genesi store.

"23.11.2006 - MorphOS will support the EFIKA
The MorphOS Team is pleased to announce that the next public release of MorphOS will support the EFIKA. The EFIKA is a low-power and silent miniature mainboard based on the Freescale MPC5200B SoC."

Recently shown in public: MorphOS 2.0 running on the Efika (more pictures...)

Also: Wipeout 2097 on Efika/MorphOS, Quake, Movie Trailer 1, Movie Trailer 2, Movie Trailer 3. (Videos from PPCNUX.de)

MorphOS runs on Efika alright, and I think it will be released soon enough.

Doubt it, even if they did at least they are delivering (non buggy) products (with warranties) in this market. Hopefully those amateurs (hyperion/Amiga Inc) will follow suit and actually release something, which they have yet to do.

@takemehomegrandma

Nice price for the board. One question though. How do you install MorphOS on to it?
Or if MorhpOS is delivered preinstalled and you need to reinstall, how do you do it?

Some people = BBRV troll

@Szaman

Your comparison concerning BBRV sounds very sophisticated.

BBRV at least keep their promises regarding hw.

@Samwel

From bbrv blog : http://bbrv.blogspot.com/2007/05/morphos-20.html

... MorphOS will install itself on the EFIKA through a small network image that can be installed by TFTP or USB. The install image can then be used to install the full MorphOS version from USB storage media or the internet.

Samwel:

the firmware supports usb masstorage media. Plug in a stick or a CDROM or a hd and there you go.

Network is another option, but I haven't tried that myself.

@Samwel

From BBRV blog (yes I was there, I admit it ):

Quote:

edit:
Darn that spellchecking, now I'm late with the info.

@Zylesea and others

So the "BIOS" will have an option to download and automatically install MorphOS?
Neat if that's the case.

EDIT: Otherwise I would have to own another computer (or have a friend with one)
which I could download the image to a memory stick with.

In the old days (2002) I thought Bill Buck & Co were evil incarnate. I still have misgivings about them but they're hardly worse than those associated with Amiga Inc.

I'm impressed that this price drop has actually happened - I should be more impressed that the product exists at all.

To those seeking the perfect system... It would seem that you'll have to build it yourself and then compute in perfect isolation there after.

Samwel:

You can access remote computers by network directly from the firmware (you *may* call the smart firmware "bios", but it is far, far more).
Anyway, as said, I didn't tried myself to do an install from network alone, but started off from an usb stick to install.

Wow!
75 Euros! That's not much more than £50!
I thought with VAT added on it would be 99 Euros minimum.

@Toaks - Genesi said from day one that they would be reducing the price to $99 in due course, so I don't think you're right there. Besides, if Hyperion win the court case they have the right to market the OS to whatever hardware they choose.

Forget hyperion. If they were to make os4 3 years ago (by contract), why would i trust them?

At least genesi didn't lie.

Hey please come back to earth!!!

The original plan wasn't a complete port to PPC for A1.
It was a for a upgrade board connected to A1200. That board didn't work so they
had to change their plans and go for a complete port instead.
Originally they where supposed to only port some parts of the OS (the critical parts),
the kernel (exec among other things) for example. Everything else was supposed to
run emulated.

The thing is that Amiga Inc has been aware of all the progress and hasn't complained
before Hyperion actually released OS4 and tried to earn money on it.
Now they want it all for themselves. Throwing Hyperion to the wolves.
So how has Hyperion been lying the past 3 years?

It's simply Amiga Inc seeing a chance to earn more money by themselves than
through cooperation with Hyperion. I think they're biting themselves in the foot if you
ask me. How will they continue to upgrade OS4 if most of the coders won't join
Amiga Inc?

/END of OT

It would be nice to see MorphOS sold on a branded memory stick, I think one of BBRV's old blogs hinted at this.

Don't forget that you can connect optical devices to USB, I'm sure that the MorphOS team will make great efforts to provide drivers for external CD/DVD drives.

If Amiga Inc had half a clue they would be licensing Efika as the new branded low end system.

Maybe if Amiga Inc lose another case we'll see the 4th option.
