Software News   Software News : Bounty for JIT enabled E-UAE on AmigaOS4.1
posted by Troels on 9-Jun-2009 14:44:14 (6296 reads)
E-UAE on AmigaOS4.1 (and MorphOS) supports only interpretive emulation and is quite slow compared to f.ex. winUAE.
What's needed is JIT 68K code emulation to speed things up.
Especially AmigaOS4.1 users with slower machines will gain a lot from a JIT version of E-UAE.

As the JIT will automatically become open source, other PPC platforms will also be able to benefit from it.

As a minimum the project should be able to.
- Bring JIT 68k code emulation to the OS4 version of E-UAE.
- Work with a number of specified games and applications that runs
(slow) under the OS4 version of E-UAE.

To be honest, whats the point ? 68k-SW falls into 3 categories:

1. System-conform (RTG/AHI etc) if these don't run on your (PPC)OS, your OS is at fail.
2. Superseeded/replaced by PPC-SW (browsers for example)
3. works fast enough in interpreted-EMU, mostly games which most of the time wouldn't run under JIT anyway.

I the event that someone with the required experience take on the project the I will make a donation but until then I will not be putting any more money to words another boaunty with know one working on it.

I much prefer to donate my money to authors of current projects and encourage them to keep working on them.

what we really need is to play smooth our old Amiga500-games!

please someone add that to petunia or something else.

If i show my new amiga system to friends, the first question of them is:

"Can i play my old Amiga500 games"

the aswer is sad:

"not really, the emus are slow and picture are slow"

Classic Emulation should be Part of Amiga OS4.1.
It´s another motivation for much old Amigans to buy a new Amiga.

Sam hardware should do it smoothly. On PC we have this since Pentium II266 Mhz!

Can they play all their old games from 286 PCs? Dos games, Win3.1 games, Win95 games? Some yes, some no. Same as us. Just as sad as us. Deal with it. You, me, them, everyone.

To be honest, this bounty is one of the most useless bounties I ever heard of.

Here are the reasons:

1. the performance of a JIT as emulator is overestimated
2. E-UAE under AOS4 or MOS is only useful for games that uses the custom chips, this type of games where programmed for CPUs below the speed of the CPU emulation that E-UAE reaches without JIT.
3. Instead of wasting money by emulating of old games we could put up bounties
- for porting old games.
- for reprogramming old games.
- for programming new games.

Since the last 20 years we had so much changes in technology.
imagine a Worms like game to play on the workbench screen over the Internet. or an online version of a Ultima like 2D RPG ... alls this could be programmed with little effort by a small hobby team of 3 people, that would make much more sense than a speedup of the existing E-UAE.

A speedup in E-UAE won't bring you new software, not for AOS4, MOS, AROS nor AOS3 ...

The JIT isn't an emulator though. The JIT is just a component used to make the emulated system run faster.

E-UAE is only used to play pretty much every game ever written for the A500, CD32, A1200/4000 - which generally involves them doing something with the custom chips not found in the modern machines. Now while these games may have been made for a system only running on a 7MHz CPU (or 14MHz for the 1200), the emulated system needs a faster CPU to be able to emulate the A500 in its entirety at a decent enough speed to be playable.

The CSPPC (at 233MHz) is barely fast enough to play A500 games using an old WarpOS port of UAE 8.x.x. The current WinUAE sources include a lot more functionality and the best speed gains are down to the JIT. Naturally, the JIT itself has also been the cause of some incompatibility issues, and needs to be disabled in certain cases - but these are few and far between and even an x86 machine typically needs the JIT enabled to run at a nice speed with no input or display lag. When you throw AGA emulation into the equation, the JIT really comes into its own at making the whole experience more enjoyable.

For the A500/A1200 games, it isn't so much porting as completely re-writing as they are 68k assembly titles that need completely reworking to remove all chipset and hardware banging methods. In this case it is simply not worth the effort, and you are then reliant on the re-made title having the same gameplay mechanics and being as fun as the original was.

But the point is not that E-UAE is going to bring new software, it is simply that you can actually play the software you already have for your classic machines that doesn't work on your new hardware at all - and the be able to play them at a decent speed without having to resort to lower screen sizes or frame skipping or reduced sound/sound quality.

It could be that someone actually just wants to play Worms, or WormsDC and not some new Worms like title.

I want to get the money I paid for the Sputnik project and apply it to the JIT project.

@Arko

I disagree. I run an EUAE Workbench for some testing. And not all RTG system friendly apps play ball and can simply crash OS4. Apart from that, have you ever used EUAE at it's full speed? Running a Workbench with native P96 drivers?

It is slow as. Even with the faster native RTG screen drivers it is still slow. And if you like to have a directory added as a volume then forget it! EUAE stops as soon as it opens files. I don't see this type of delay on a PC.

And on a Sam this will be even slower.
