News   News : Campaign for Radeon HD driver support
   posted by eXec.pl on 24-Jul-2009 8:47:33 (7489 reads)
The Amiga platform, in spite of its development, is still incompatible with many contemporary solutions. A good example is lack of a complete support for the up-to-date graphic cards, especially in the field of 3D acceleration (OpenGL) or the Color Management System (ICM). Hans de Ruiter is the one who has met the challenge to develop drivers for the latest AMD Radeon HD graphic cards. The project, which started last year, has already given the first results. It’s reasonable to support Hans de Ruiter’s work in order to reward him for his achievements and to encourage him in his further work. That’s the reason why the eXec internet magazine has launched a campaign for Radeon HD driver support. The campaign is addressed to Amiga enthusiasts who are eager to accelerate the development of Amiga platform. Donations can be made by HDR donate button. For a start, the eXec editorial staff is donating a purchase of a HIS Radeon 4350 PCI graphic card, which so far is the most modern solution of AMD for low-end market.

About Radeon HD driver:
The goal of this project, leaded by the Hans the Ruiter, is to create an Amiga OS graphic driver for R5xx (and following) GPUs. One of the motivations for Hans’ work is to be able to use shaders, that are present in the modern GPUs. However, it is important to mention that full support of modern graphic cards need much work to be done. Hans initiative is an important step, that in future will allow to introduce many modern technologies, such as; UVD or shader.

About eXec magazine:
eXec is the oldest and the only internet magazine in Poland, that is exclusively oriented to the Amiga platform. It has started its activity in the year 2000, in a form of a newspaper (attached with CD). Now it is available only as websites: www.exec.pl and www.amigaos.pl. eXec stuff and readers are
still looking for the new opportunities to support development of the latest versions of AmigaOS.

@Darth_X

?? So Genesi has access to developer material etc.?

@Hans
Donating in USD or Euro would be better for most people I think, at least I had no idea about the exchange rate for NZD.

Just made a small donation.

It could be possible that this Hans might have signed a NDA with ATI, and perhaps even having AMD/ATI considering leave RadeonHD drivers to the Open Source market for porting it to OpenGL-systems like the new AmigaOS 4.1

@Darth_X

Seriously, it was a valid question. What does the page you linked to have to do with the news item you posted it as a comment to?

If there IS a logical link here, I for one do not see it. So any help from you in understanding what you meant by that comment would be nice.

Perhaps I over reacted, sorry zerohero. I will assume this is a cultural difference between Europe and North America, where business is operated differently.

Yeah understanding between people is the best!

I can say about the Radeon graphics cards for future Amigas maybe that in mine that is the Amiga One I changed the graphics card months ago and I don't want to change more because my items are so new and I think a 128 MB card is so far enough for an Amiga One.

I fail to see any trolling in Zerohero's question, and nothing rude in it.

Wow. I certainly had a nice surprise in my inbox this morning. Thank you for your support everyone.

@nikosidis

The Picasso96 material is under NDA, so open-source is not possible. However, AMD released source-code and documentation, so anyone who wants to write a driver can take the open-source Linux driver as a starting point. The Linux driver is BSD so it can be used in both open and closed source projects.

@Troels

I did think about currencies, but then we could end up with paying double currency conversion fees; once for conversion from the source currency to say USD, and then again for a conversion from USD to NZD. There wasn't an option to let people choose their own currency, which is what I would have preferred.

There's a currency conversion tool here which I use often. Basically $1NZD is equal to approximately:
- $0.65 US
- 0.46 Euro
- $0.80 AU
- $0.71 CA

The NZD is worth less than all of these currencies. Use the currency conversion tool here if you wish to know how many NZD to enter for a donation from your own currency.

Hans
