   posted by DiscreetFX on 5-Jun-2011 5:06:48 (7751 reads)
PRESS RELEASE

Date: June 6th, 2011

This announcement already went out by telegraph on accident and is burning up the wires so we are also releasing it here one day early. To Celebrate it's 16th Birthday DiscreetFX is once again helping the Amiga community by Launching Project Metropolis.

http://www.discreetfx.com/ProjectMetropolis.html

What is Project Metropolis you might ask? It is a Instant Download Application Storefront for Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga. We will not only sell our own applications there, we will sell 3rd party programs as well. A very generous revenue share has been setup for the developer and is paid monthly.

3rd Party developer gets 80%

DiscreetFX gets 20%

The application approval process is very easy and the market will decide which apps are good or bad not DiscreetFX. Now, finally customers will have a central place to buy and Instantly Download their Amiga OS 4.x, MorphOS, AROS and Classic Amiga apps. Developers can focus on creating their great applications and even games, then be confidant users will actually see them since there will be a quick cloud based solution for customers to buy them.

Welcome to the unified future of buying all your Amiga Os 4.x, MorphOS, AROS & Classic Amiga commercial applications in one place. Free programs are of course available from AmiNet like they have been for many years.

If you are a developer and wish to contact us about this venture please use the link below. Great developers and DiscreetFX partnering together is what will make this a fantastic success.

@DiscretFx

Btw, just to add to the amigans.net answer, i not think it will have much succes (i wish you luck there of course). Just because united place for it are already : amikit. We all trust them. They show us how they work in all the years. But in compare with DiscretFx what we have ? We have in last years just many newses about nothing. The only one piece of software which all of us wait : aladdin4. And now , i think we all even not will use it at all, we just want to see, that so called "company", just do what they say.

I think only buy making aladdin and release it for buy at last, and making some more prods for actuall buy - it can step by step give more pluses for you as for company, and then, maybe all those "ideas" will make sense.

As it now, i think not many of us will in interest to worry about at all . Sorry, but its just sad brutal true.

@DiscreetFX

I think 20% is big percentage for simply hosting;
Do you do marketing and software support as well?

This is a great idea, also to for the old shareware programs requiring keys(licences) so could be a solution for like Miami, Mui and other things which dont always deliver.

Great initiative !

This will motivate the few developers in Amiga world to invest more time and efforts.

Seriously... There are around a thousand users (all platforms added), they already just do it for fun since they don't earn much. And yet, you want to take 20% from them ?

Why do I have the impression your only motivation is... money ?

How is going Aladdin PPC port btw ?

Its better value for developers than lets say, a certain other couple of App stores out there...

That seems a pretty healthy reason for doing it. I don't see what the problem is. 20% is certainly not ott in anyway. As a developer it is still worth trying as at least you have a good chance of getting exposure to everyone. Besides if the app is good enough you can loose 20% in the total price. A good idea - I hope it works.

Last thing that Amiga deserves is an App-store clone.
Apple = Great-Brother-Like hardware firm.

Removed last part of the sentence, reason: indecency.
@Raffaele No matter what you think of a company, that comparison is not ok at all in this forum. Edit: reworded last part, as requested by user. /tomazkid

@kas1e

Yes, Aladdin 4D 6.0 is taking too long, the code was a mess when we got it. DiscreetFX Labs is working hard on cleaning it up and making it Multi-Platform for the 21st century. Like the aging of a fine wine this is taking a while. This has nothing to do with Project Metropolis by the way.

@Leo

They are welcome to continue selling it on their own. No developer is required to participant in Project Metropolis. We thought about tying them down, beating them and forcing them to, but decided against it.

lool!

careful, everything you say can and will be used against you! You just made yourself guilty of planning to torture people! If you are not a dictator this is going to take you to the death row! If you are you can live in a beautiful cell with every comfort for the next 30 years! :-p

About Metropolis, I'm not sure it's going to work atm.. we are different®

A good idea; if they do a good web site for it (simple to use, clear and professional) I believe it could be a good thing.

If DiscreetFX handle the payments and just send the money to the developer's bank account then no, 20 per cent is not off the mark.

@all

20-30, even 40 % is nothing compared to packaging, servers, payment handling, marketing, shipping costs...

So it is a welcome thing. Indeed on Mac App Store you find a lot of great software cheaper than boxed version in stores.

@discretefx
As I said on Amigans.net news item, an App Store for AmigaOS is something that we have desperately needed, so I hope you can make it work! It will make it much easier to sell new programs in our small market, as no need for expensive packaging nor manufacturing many products that might not be sold. Fingers crossed

To the moaners: Think of the App Store as "Shareware v2.0". It allows small developers (of which the Amiga market is mostly composed these days!) to easily sell their programs, without the expense of making & selling physical boxes.
