Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Enhancer Software v1.1 Released
   posted by amigakit on 31-Aug-2016 0:28:31 (12923 reads)
Enhancer Software Pack - Version 1.1 Update
Major upgrade with new content & free for registered users

Cardiff August 31st, 2016

A-EON Technology Ltd is pleased to announce a major update to the Enhancer Software for AmigaOS 4.1 systems. The Enhancer Software version 1.1 upgrade demonstrates our ongoing commitment to the AmigaOS platform and is available as a free download from AMIStore for existing registered users. New customers can either purchase a digital download from AMIStore or a buy a boxed CD from selected Amiga dealers.

The original Enhancer Software package was met with positive acclaim when it was released earlier this year. The v1.1 update is the culmination of four months hard work by the dedicated AmigaDeveloper.com team who have added a whole host of new function-ality and features.

Applications & utilities
Apart from significant updates to key software utilities such as MultiViewer v2.6, MultiEdit v1.3, AmiPDF v1.34, X-Dock v0.35 and TuneNet v2.4 there are new additions such as the ‘themeable’ Clock utility (v53.7) with a wide selection of ‘skins’ included.

RadeonHD driver update
The RadeonHD driver has once again been updated. The new versions, v2.18 (Plus Edition) and v1.17 (Standard Edition), includes several maintenance updates and increased compatibility for additional graphics card firmware support.

Warp3D Nova, the Shader based 3D graphics system, has been significantly updated and v1.29 now supports MipMapping, Stencil buffering and many other new functions. It is complemented by the much awaited premiere of the OpenGL ES 2.0 library on AmigaOS.

New datatypes & features
The new Sound Datatype, which includes MOD, MPEGA and WAV, is a significant improvement over earlier versions. It now supports multi channel 16-bit/32-bit/64-bit (floating point) streaming with internal support for up to 19 named channels. Apart from adding full MultiViewer support, we have been working closely with third party application developers to ensure that the new datatypes deliver the added functionality they require for their own software titles. The Ringhio Notifications server has been under continuous development since the last Enhancer Software release. The latest version (53.60) adds the possibility of a ‘Progress Bar’ support inside the notification “bubble” pop-up.

Future proofing
With one eye to the future, the building blocks of applications, ReAction compatible gadgets and classes have been extended and many of the main programs have been converted to use the new gadgets. The new Clock app is based on the new flexible and powerful clock.gadget

Credits
The Enhancer Software package would not have been possible without the excellent work and contribution of AmigaDeveloper.com team. A-EON Technology would like to sincerely thank the growing team of developers, beta testers and translators for their invaluable work over the last few months. It is very encouraging that so many Amigans are willing to give their time to help contribute to a major AmigaOS project in 2016.

Is it a different demo to the one Daniel uploaded to Facebook?

There is a known bug in the wordwrap as you type function of the texteditor.gadget.

This causes your first problem in the first screen shot.

The second version if the cut & paste isn't so much a bug as a "not how it works" the wrap action only occurs "as you type" .

These are gadget level things I can't do much more than make BZs against the texteditor.gadget (which I have done).

The last screen shot showing NotePad correctly wordwrapping shows no such thing, it's wrapping the lines in the display, not in the document (if you save it out the lines are still all on one line). NotePad does not enable the wordwrap as you type feature.

OK thanks for the information.
And do not improve until the bug in the system text editor.gadget you can do so by Multiedit worked as Notepad?

I think it is better for the user to see more than what is written earlier than writing a long unending line.

@Mufa

If you want to disable the horizontal scrollbar you can set the SCROLL tooltype.

I just discovered that the sense of that is reversed, it should be NOSCROLL to disable the tooltype, and SCROLL to enable it, but some how SCROLL disables it, which is backwards...

When the horizontal scroller is disabled long text lines are wrapped in the display (not the saved document) like notepad.

After installing all the classes/datatypes etc. and rebooting, I copied AmiPDF to ram: for testing. It worked fine until I selected the "About" menu; at which time an empty window opened and my entire display was frozen (including the clock). I managed to perform a soft reboot before I/O froze and captured a crashlog from the debug buffer. I'm assuming that the about window is using infowindow.class so I can either open a forum topic and post the crashlog or send it to you privately if you prefer. I'm still using the original OS4 Ringhio if that means anything.

@all
Has anyone else tried the "About" menu in the Enhancer AmiPDF program??

@xenic

Looks like the already reported "infowindow crashes when no background texture is set in system GUI prefs" bug. I tried to isolate the problem by no luck so far

I believe this is due to a bug in window.class that was fixed just recently (middle of August) I certainly can no longer reproduce the lock up when opening my about window in MultiView after jumping it to AWebs public screen.....

@amigakit

Excellent work, Congratulations to A-EON Technology and the whole AmigaDeveloper.com team for their hard work.

A few suggestions for the Amiga Enhancer package and A-EON machines:

1. Adding .LRC files datatype (for playing downloadable mp3 lyrics in mutiviewer)

2. A new TuneNet plugin that play LRC lyrics as an animated scroller text in Workbench backdrop (maybe it is time for a new interactive CANDI)? this could make OS 4.1 more desirable for nostalgic demosceners and retro fans who like watching classic A500 intros with sine scroller text on a reflecting surface.

3. New interactive CANDI with classic Amiga demos effects like 3D starfield pixels, plasma effects, mandelbrot fractals zooming, etc...How about a boing ball interactive backdrop (or other 3D geometric) that bounce & dance in harmony with MP3 music?

4. Complete GUI theme for each CANDI backdrops which includes sounds and notifications, e.g. games themes with sounds and animations from famous classic Amiga games, I think this will attract more classic Amiga gamers to OS 4.1 platform. Like it or not most Amiga fans are gamers not serious computer users.

5. Labeling AmigaOne cases / keyboards with metallic badges that have the original Commodore-Amiga logo typeface / font. This is for nostalgic Amigans mostly, while most of them like the nostalgic feel of AmigaOS 4.1, this is not the case for the AmigaOne machines.

6. Amiga was famous for it's multitasking capability in it's early days, today Amiga multitasking is terrible compared to other systems, simply because Amiga lacks any task bar capability for a quick and easy task switching, I hope A-EON would add a fast task switcher to the new X-Dock.

7. Back in the days Amiga was famous for it's animation and animated text, so I suggest an animated text Ringhio notification.

I know I'm asking too much and A-EON has more important things to do, these are just my ideas and dreams nothing more.

Thanks for your help now is better
If we could just turn off the only horizontal and vertical scroll switch on, would be like in Notepad (I know you can scroll the text roll the mouse).

@XyPsy

Welcome and thanks for your ideas with respect to updates on the Enhancer Software !

A great team has been assembled who are motivated and work hard on the Enhancer Software project. If we can at least break even with the development cost of the Enhancer Software, we will continue to invest in updating it and adding new apps, drivers, classes and utilities. Every sale of an Enhancer Software CD or download means that an investment into further development is possible.

We also appreciate the pool of ideas from users who can help shape the direction that the project can go forward.

Nonsense. Amiga is GREAT at multitasking *IF* the user uses the Amiga feature known as "multiple screens". I can quickly & easily switch between my web browser, news reader, email, Workbench, etc by cycling through them (or if really necessary, right-clicking the depth gadget to get a list of screens).

(snip - removed paragraph that Broadblues correctly pointed out was in error)

@AmigaKit

Maybe you could create a ... system patch that automagically asks the user if they want to create a (Like Workbench) public screen, when a program tries to use a named public screen that doesn't exist?

As a kludgey alternative, some kind of patch to give a special "Like Workbench" screenmode (with a fixed modeid), so that any programs which support creating their own screen can get one like Workbench. I imagine the patch would automagically add SA_LikeWorkbench to any such screens that were opened.

Since you are replacing OS4 system components, it would be rather helpful for OS4 beta-testers if your installer had the option to not replace system components (or at least marked which ones are replacements, so they can be unticked). And hopefully most of the actual programs will work (with reduced functionality) in this case...

Great work.

When can we try out the first program/game that uses Warp3D Nova/OpenGL ES 2.0 ? I'm very excited to see it in action! (yes i have seen the examples)

The Installer does this already as you can elect to install the components you want.

However I do not see the sense in keeping the old Ringhio Notifications from the OS4.1 system. The new version 53.60 that we have fixes many bugs reported from 2009 to Hyperion and left unresolved until we restarted development last year. The brand new Sound Datatype has been written from ground upwards and is far more advanced than the old OS 4.1 supplied version, supporting streaming, multiple channels and 16bit/32bit/64 bit (FP).

Similarly, the RadeonHD Lite edition, that A-EON licenced to Hyperion for inclusion on selected 4.1 FE ISOs is very limited as it is meant for emergency boot purposes only and it is highly recommended that the Enhancer Software version is installed over it.

Having said that I expect Beta testers will keep mulitple partitions, one being a stock 4.1 install without anything else installed.

Yes & no. Yes it does offer the option to not install components (as I saw on Epsilon's blog), so thanks for that... But it does not make clear which components are replacements of existing components. Of course I can work that myself, with enough digging, but it would be rather easier (and less error prone) if at least there was a little * next to each component that is a replacement (and one line of text at the bottom (or in the Help page) stating what the * means). Especially since every update to the Enhancer Software is only going to make the situation worse.

It's not a deal breaker, but I figured I'd put the request in, because it's likely to be an issue for many OS4 beta-testers. I can imagine it causing problems down the road (due to accidental installation of replacement components).

Quote:
However I do not see the sense in keeping the old (snip)

Mainly that OS4 beta-testers are supposed to be testing that standard OS4 components work as expected. Replacing them with 3rd-party components (that may well be better) prevents testing that the whole OS works with the standard components. I mean, we don't want to end-up in a situation where an official OS4 update isn't as well tested as it should, with the end result of unnoticed bugs in a future OS4 update.

That's probably not explained very well, but it's the best I can do, so I won't make any further posts on this topic (but feel free to email me if you wish).

Quote:

I never meant that the updated RadeonHD driver shouldn't be installed. That would be silly. The one included with OS4 is (as you say) an old & intentionally crippled "Lite" version, with the obvious hope that users will want to upgrade to the full version. (Of course the Lite one needs testing too, but I suspect not too much.)

Quote:
Having said that I expect Beta testers will keep mulitple partitions, one being a stock 4.1 install without anything else installed.

I don't see that as too relevant: It's rather hard to test a vanilla installation of OS4, without any third party programs installed at all. Well yes, you can do SOME useful testing (and it has optional Contributions like RunInUAE), but IMHO it's rather easier for "everyday testing" if OS4 beta-testers can check that OS4 updates don't break 3rd-party programs (by just using them as normal, e.g. Odyssey, TuneNet).

And surely you wouldn't want to be in a situation where an update to OS4 broke the Enhancer Software programs (without good technical reasons) would you? (i.e. Simply because no-one was testing it with beta components that then became part of the next OS4 update.)

(And yes, I realise there's the possibility of Enhancer Software's replacement components not working well with a future OS4 update, simply because they haven't been tested with such an update before release. I'm not sure what the solution is there, apart from dealing with any such problem if it arises.)

I haven't yet installed the Enhancer Software (I really should find the time), but one idea for improving Ringhio:

If I close a program on a public screen, the public screen stays open until any Ringhio notifications on it disappear. It would be better if Ringhio noticed that it was preventing a public screen from closing, and moved it's notifications to another screen (probably Workbench). Or even better (but less likely) if the notifications automatically moved to the top-most public screen, every time the user switched screens.

Yes if it finds an existing version (either old Hyperion version or previous release Enhancer Software version), it warns user and they can Skip or Proceed.

I like to think that it makes the situation better of course bring new features and functionality to the platform However, I know what you really mean ..

Quote:

RadeonHD is not part of the OS, it is "third party" (as some call it) relative to Hyperion's software so I think it is in the same boat as the other components that are natively part of the Enhancer Software. I always find this phrase strange, because if you look into it, a significant proportion of the OS distribution is "third party".

Quote:

Well we just updated it and supplied a new version to Hyperion for beta testing. I am sure it will be well tested.

Quote:

So far, this has happened half a dozen times, and our developers have worked around it, and reported the problem back to Hyperion. However as can be seen recently in another thread, the InfoWindow Class has exposed a bug in ReAction's window.class, which is out of our control to fix.
