Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (140650 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

OS 4 was released in May 2004, and has been updated ever since.

To be a bit more precise, not AmigaOS4 was released but Amiga OS 4.0 Developer Pre-release.

The question is where is the momentum Hyperion was talking about all the time that was the reason why not to release AmigaOS4 (you probably meant "Final update" than) sooner for classic Amigas with PPC.

On the other hand it is nice after you promised "real" release of the real AmigaOS4 before the end of this year, you done it at least this way, so thanks for your work and GRATZ (I don't use dancing bananas, but if i would, the one or two belong here

I asked questions, legitimate ones even. If you don't have the answers, please let whoever has got them - ideally the directly interested party - read them and answer to them. Do not pollute this thread with personal attacks, thank you.

Hum... I guess I misunderstood something: don't we usually use the word "release" for something people can.. buy ?

Ok, so let's say I want a fresh new AmigaOS4 system. And I'm quite new to the Amiga. Where can I get it ?

Seems like I can't... Care too explain ?

btw, you said you did not release OS4 last year, because of lack of hardware: releasing OS4 without available hardware wouldn't make sense... Now it doesn't seem the hardware situation has changed at all (from a simple user pov I mean: I don't care if 1 or 50 hardware projects have been announced... the fact is that no hardware is available now..), and you release OS4, without available hardware...
Again, did I miss something ?

Nobody told you can buy OS4 as of yet, with luck hardware will (finally) be available in januari/februari.

Why release OS4 final now ? Perhaps because Hyperion believes the lack of hardware is at an end first quarter 2007...

There wasn't really much time. We've been working on the installation image for two weeks strait, including weekends, to get everything finished and tested by christmas.

Question: in the version of kernel of this update is it possible to enable virtual memory? If yes, how?

No, it's the only feature we didn't implement. There have been some unresolved issues with the device API that finally prevented it. It is planned to add paging in a patch or later update.

@falemagn

As we say in French: don't make you more stupid than you are You perfectly know that this is AmigaOS 4.0. Period.

This is the so called "final version" as opposed to "pre-release". Nothing more, nothing less.

Elwood, I'll save you from knowing what we call people like you in Italian, instead.

Please, pretty please, keep out of this thread if you've got nothing meaningful to add, thank you.

Otherwise, there are questions up there that are awaiting for an answer.

I dont think falemagn was trolling - he was just asking a question with no apparent alteria motive - so I wouldnt flame him for that. But what's with the pose he's striking in his avatar photo? :-p

As for OS4... finally it's here. Thats good! For those who think it's the end - it's not. It's the beggining - we finally have a base to build on!!

Fabio i know you as a skilled and intelligent person, You already know that this is the "final pre release update" before the "Official 4.0x release" that will be gold when new OS4 capable hardware will be available.

Keep it easy Fabiol... life is short anf full of ####!

You gotta love how everyone assumes to know what I think or already know, and how the only people who are remotely entitled to answer to my questions so far have avoided to do so.

Why's that every time someone asks questions that try to see what's beneath the surface some of you people (always the same ones) feel compelled to overflow the thread with off topic posts and remarks?

Let the people who are in the know answer the questions I asked.

Well I to thinks falemagn has a point.

This is the final update and called OS4.0 Final, and yet more will come in a later update/boingbag. Wouldnt it be a better choise to call Final ? as it will have things you wanted to have in OS4 final but didnt get into this update ?

"Final Update" means that the next update released for OS 4 will be OS 4.01.

So, pardon me for not being overly cheerful, what's "different" now? I mean, why's everyone posting dancing bananas if this is just another update? Just curious: what's the logic behind the version change? Why is this one the final update and not the previous one?

This is the version of AmigaOS 4 with all the features and bugfixes that were meant for a stable, official release. Even if it's in fact an update to the previous version, it is still a very important step in the AmigaOS timeline. Think of it in terms of "complete", while the previous version were "not complete". Hence all the cheers and excitement.

For what I understand, the next version will be in fact the same as this one, only that it will be released as an CD and it will contain the needed drivers for the hardware it will be released with.
