What has that got to do with anything? The library released, together with DvPlayer, included a GPL codec, end of story. If chip or cobra had checked what they were doing none of this would have happened. If you don't have anything better to do, feel free to check MorphOS software for GPL stuff....

Jocke 'Zerohero' Birging

edit: typo, seems I'll never learn how to spell :(

@falemagn

You can play all the games you want but this is about MOS vs Amiga OS.

well I do know about copyright law.

so using your own words:
Quote:
Unfortunately, the term derivative works is extremely sketchy,

Unfortunately, that's what copyright is all about. It's not GPL's fault if it's "sketchy". GPL grants you more right than you would be entitled to by default, to do that it has to deal with the "sketchy" parts of copyright laws, but that's life.

MOS is a derivative work of a fully copyrighted work (Amiga OS). So the the lawyers can deal with this non-scetchy copyrighted work. Remember that's just life.

First of all, Fabio is not a MorphOS supporter, so don't waste your breath.
Apart from that... MorphOS does not use AmigaOS code, that's a big difference.
It did, back in its origins, when most of the OS was emulated, in the same way that UAE requires AmigaOS. Does it make it derivative work of AmigaOS? Dunno, but even if it did, AmigaOS is not GPL, there's no law that doesn't allow you to make software for an OS.

@ToAks

OK! Last question from me on this matter, last post as well....

Why do we (OS4 community) always feel the need to blame others (MOS community) for our mistakes? I've seen this numerous times this summer and I'm really tired of being laughed at because we can't cope with the real world. Do we really want this to be our sandbox, where noone else can play?

Topic from now on dropped on my behalf...

Regards,
Jocke 'Zerohero' Birging

I have a registered copy now, without doubt my favourite movie player of all time on Amiga OS. Looking forward to Quicktime (.MOV) and WMV (Windows format) support in the future?

maybe some should start checking all the files in the blue camp and see how many are GPL material??

Ambient is GPL.

Is this really... freedom ?!

That's not what I would call "freedom"... GPL sucks, at least from that point of view.

Leo.

Then don't use GPL code, contact the author of the library and ask for a different license, or look for something else under a different license, like BSD.

Or hell, why change anything at all? GPL the application, keep using the GPL sources and be done with it. Nothing wrong with GPL'ed commercial software, IMO there should be more of it.

The only time I hear people complaining about the GPL is when they want to use the code for free and make money off of it without wanting to listen to what the original author wants with regards to the software used. Well, sheesh. Closed software doesn't offer that either, at least with GPL, there are options.

Isn't MPlayer GPL? Wasn't that originally MOS?

@T_Bone

Well, Ambiet is not exactly GPL. It allows dynamic linking with libraries provided by it (icon and workbench.library AFAIK).

It's GPL. It just includes exceptions for these two libs, in their vanilla form, since they predated Ambient and making them GPL would make the whole thing useless.
