Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (140664 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

@ falemagn

I think you are reading far too much into a press release written in English by someone whose first language is not English, especially as I suspect you also do not have English as your first language. A release of OS4 was made availble in 2004, it was a pre-release but still OS4 was it not? English is my first language and I dont see the problem. Mind you, you are right American English and non-English speakers may see it differently , but I speak correct British Queens English and frankly its just splitting hairs.

IMHO:

In the context of the statement made announcing the availability of Amiga OS4 final for A1 users and developers, who have previously purchased AmigaOS4 as part of their A1 purchase (be it XE, SE, or Micro) and therefore received an official pre-release CD-ROM, and access to updates, then the statement that AmigaOS 4 has been available since 2004 obviously relates to the developer pre-release.

But hey lets face it, most of the damned arguments in this so called "community" are down to splitting hairs, and unconstructive flame baiting. (Hell I can probably be accused of it also.)

I hope that one day someone can make a statement in this community and not have it torn apart and over analysed to find hidden meanings.

I hope that 2007 brings that day.

BTW: Happy New Year to everyone be you blue, red or purple

Edited for clarity and hoping I haven't missed any further typos.

Ok, I've scanned through umisef's post.

Now, despite what it was called, OS4 was released back in 2004.
(the fact that it has been unavailable since, does not change the fact that it was released in some form, earlier).

But OS4 was completed this year.

That leaves a bunch of unanswered questions that umisef had ideas about.

Let's say this is all a legal dispute, or an attempt at "eating the cake and keeping it"

Do you really think you will get a comment on an ongoing legal dispute?

@ falemagn
Give it a rest, please. You may not realise it but your tone is coming off quite condescending and I feel this is rubbing many of us the wrong way.

No one wants to be pointed out as a buffoon, even if they quite glaringly ARE a buffoon.

Thank you.

@ Everyone
Anything else written from now on has strictly to do with the news item. If you just HAVE to reply/flame/go off-topic, I will split it off and start a new thread for you in an appropriate forum. Got it?

@Corwin

Hyperion press release states that AmigaOS4 was released in may 2004 !!

It was printed on the original CDs as 'Developers Pre-release.' I was hoping for
Amiga OS4 on July4th, 2004!

@Sven,
(OT)
Hmm. Frankly, as someone who lives in the Midlands, you ought to realise that the Queen's British English is far from "real" English.

Real English is only spoken by people in the Black Country.

(/OT)

@Hyperion team and all OS4 developers.

Gud onya, ar kidda. S'bostin stuff. Ahm gooin ta av mesen a beer to cellibrate. Yam gooin ta joyne us or wot?

(OT again)
Now THAT'S real English

slashdot article

As usual slashdot commentary is rather negative.

(slashdot is lousy these days, reposting articles several years old, etc.)

edit: clarification

Re /. Yeah, I noticed that as well, it's almost as if they as a repressed Linux Minority are taking it out on the really little boys or something?

the only way to silence slashdot style critics is availability, and software..

Well, I think it's up to the developers to decide this. At some point, Firefox developers decided to release it as 2.0 version, even if just two week after the release a 2.0.1 update was needed. If you ask me, as a simple Firefox user that has been using previous beta version, I can't find any difference, not even between 2.0 and 2.0.1.

That's totally untrue, Firefox 2 was released October 24th. Firefox 2.0.0.1 was released December 19th, that is 2 months later and not 2 weeks later. If you were noticing differences in behaviour between 2.0 and 2.0.0.1 it would mean that the release is broken since these minor updates are for security and stability fixes only and are released every 5 weeks on average. On a side note, if you didn't know this, you shouldn't use beta versions but only end-user final releases...

Yes, it would be good if Adam could give a better description of his upcoming products. My hash of irc logs and half remembered thoughts isnt very nice to read. Would be nice to have clear concise info from the man himself.

Why would there be positive comments ? Is AmigaOS4 available to more people today than last week ?

> Does OS4 support bootable virtual CDROM / DVDROM drive images like a RAD: device ?

It supports booting from virtual floppy disk images which are mounted with
FFS. IIRC I've also tested using floppy disk images from PC floppy disks,
those cant be used for booting (FFS doesnt understand them) but you can create
a MountList for them with the MountInfo command, change the DOSType to the
default DOSType of CrossDOSFileSystem and then they can be used after booting
and mounting.

To be able to use CD/DVD image files you'd need to create a mountlist
for CDFileSystem, and you probably have to take care about the image file
size, some MB are no problem but using files with some dozends MB is
probably not possible because of some memory limit in UBoot.

Its possible to mount ISO images with special filesystems, e.g. I'm using
isodisk.device here for that purpose and I'm sure there exist more working
solutions (but forgot the names). But I'd not use the BOOTRAD: device for that.

@corwin

If you've read slashdot commentary over a longer period, you will have noticed a greatly increased negative attitude amongst its commenting readers.

not just for this item. but generally. (imho)

This is very true, but on this specific case, I can't blame them and the comments are negative on all the sites that reported the news.

I won't even try to explain it, 'cause I'm pretty sure you did get what I was trying to say, didn't you?
