hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New CPU Modules: Estimated Availability June 19/2006
posted by ackcontrls on 23-Apr-2006 15:30:37 (69814 reads)
ACK Software Controls, Inc. is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of two new AmigaOne XE CPU modules. The first CPU module will be equipped with a Freescale MC7448 CPU clocked at 1GHz. The 1GHz module will retail for $500.00 US Dollars. The second CPU module will be equipped with a Freescale MC7448 clocked at 1.7GHz will retail for $850.00 US Dollars. Both CPU modules will be eqipped with a high quality heatsink and fan to ensure quiet, reliable operation.

Prototype modules will be demonstrated May 22/2006. The location for this demonstration has yet to be determined. Due to the low volume nature of these products, emails indicating demand for either of the two units is greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for updates.

Sincerely,

Adam Kowalczyk

Can I trade in my 800 MHz G4 for a big discount? Please?

Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to handle exchanges. I will have to rely on the free-market taking care of that aspect of things.

It has a lot to do with economies of scale. I'm pretty sure Apple CPU modules as well as the 3rd party CPU modules aren't built in such small volumes that I'm anticipating.

So we need to find a way to scale things up. Are there any other uses for these modules? As part of a powerpc development kit maybe? Actually, I think that the PowerVixxen you're working on could make a good, low-cost powerpc dev board Gumstix style. Most powerpc dev boards seem to cost $500+, even if it's a 100 MHz board with only 16MB RAM.

Wow! That's great news.
I hope these fit in my µA1-C.

Hmmmm didnt Eyetech have some micro and XE boards around with CPU modules as the only missing component ???

I remember them saying that too. It would be great if they could sell whatever stock they have. The more OS4 users, the better.

AFAIK, the modules for the A1-XEs and uA1-C's should be interchangeable. We've had several members replace a dead CPU from one with a CPU from the other (model).

I expect the $500 module will likely sell to anyone with a dead CPU currently, so it's a good thing. At the prices of the 1.7GHz, just not sure I'd expect many sales there. For my $, I'd rather buy a few PV, wait for Amy, or if my CPU goes south at some point, buy the 1GHz module..

Yes, they will work in the MicroA1's as well. It will depend on the type of case the user has put their motherboard in as it may interfere with the heatsink.

Oddly, demand for the 1.7GHz model is higher than I expected. It might end up being a 50/50 split when it comes to the manufacturing run. The CPU modules will be also used in an upcoming product, but demand is still expected to be too low to get any significant economies of scale.

I see that 850 Dollars are 690 Euros ATM? I thought it would be worse...

The components cost to me are in US dollars, so it makes sense for me to price things in US dollars even though I'm somewhat at the mercy of exchange rates.

The 7448 has support for frequency scaling (/2 and /4), and this would be a cool thing (metaphorically and literally) to see supported in AmigaOS 4.0.

Very surprising. I hope those numbers are coming from people that are indeed ready to part with that amount, rather than the 'Oh, I want one!' that changes later once they're able to buy.

Upcoming product?

@ackcontrls

I was hoping for an update on the Powervixxen situation. Is the issue with the A1200 CPU-connectors already sorted out? Any (planned) update or chance to see a working prototype soon?

Well, I was surprised to see people wanting the 1GHz module at all, except of course as a replacement for a dead 800 MHz one. OTOH, the 1.7 GHz one gives me more than double speed (in addition to a proper fan/heatsink). I can't let that pass.

Yeah, it's a lot of money. But I'm going to enjoy that speed so much. Ripping a CD in less than ten minutes, anyone? While still enjoying my AmigaOS? And what about DVPlayer/MPlayer performance? (Oh dear, somebody stop me before I go completely helgish! )

Best regards,

Niels

FOr us in the UK, according to http://www.xe.com , this should equate to around...

$850 USD = £476.94 UKP
$500 USD = £280.55 UKP

:edit
Let's get the currency right amipal...

Same for me. Thinking about 500$ for 200 extra MHz or 850$ for 900 extra MHz...

What about E-UAE and FPSE?

Alex.
