Yes, I'm impressed.

Glad to see things holding scheduals this week.

A very interesting answer to Q5:

Quote:

We are in current discussions with three companies, and I believe that two of them have product and offerings that offer a competitive opportunity for the Amiga community. We are striving to get these deals complete, and until they are signed I am not at liberty to discuss them. I will say that Troika is not one of them, contrary to what is rumbling out there.

You COULD take that to mean that they have finished making a deal with Troika, or you could take the obvious meaning.

Interesting times ahead, methinks.

@tonyw

Yes, it hopefully means that Troika is done discussing.
Otherwise I'll be sad.

Ok, A couple of things that concern me...

Quote:
We have been working since last November on locating a hardware partner for new PowerPC based hardware and we have made some slow but successful progress. I hope that this Hyperion issue can be rectified so that we can get it completed, and then we can get the hardware ready to ship.

Quote:
I have had conversations with the Freidens about this, and once we have the legal situation resolved then we can put that horse before the cart. If we can not do it with OS 4, then I am sure the FIVE can take care of that issue.

Quote:
We have made offers to Hyperion to resolve this matter that we believe are fair, but we have been turned down on three separate occasions.

Did I miss something in the answers or in the past? Are there legal troubles between Hyperion and Amiga Inc.?

Troika not one of them? They seem to be the only one with info on an actual product?

Quote:
Q. You will see portions of OS 5 being delivered in AmigaAnywhere and then those portions will marry with the rest of OS 5 and it will begin shipping as well.

A. No it will not. We want to see OS 4 ship, but by the time we get everything worked out you may be running version 5. I should mention that while we have only talked about it once, OS 5 has been in development in Amiga by Amiga engineers and staff for over two years. We have made some amazing progress and we are pleased with the results to date.

2 Amiga OSes?!!??!!? Not another community split I hope. I have bad feelings about this "OS5"

and last which gave me the most humor...
Quote:
Over the next 5 years you will see OS 4, 5, and version 6 in the market along with supporting builds and infrastructure across several digital devices.

On the inside of my Amiga OS 3.9 booklet that comes in the CD case it says Copyright 2000. 6 and a 1/2 years later there is still no newer Amiga OS "in the market", but the predictions still come that 4, 5, and 6, are just around the corner. Laughable. I don't mean any disrepect to him and I'm sure he's not lying, but that is a pretty bold prediction and one I think everyone in the community would have learned not to make by now.

ugh.

I hate trying to read between the bean-speak. I think I'll wait for a few days and read what everyone else's thoughts are before I formulate any opinions as of yet.

Poor Troika I wonder what is to become of Amy...

It means Troika is not one of the companies that Amiga Inc is dealing with. Please don't try to interpret the openly obvious. :)

Also, YES, there are legal problems between Amiga Inc and Hyperion. Problems that -- as I believe Bill tried his best -- they really can't get into for hopefully obvious reasons.

@everyone,

While not trying to dissuade the conversation, I might ask that you consider making your comments in the official thread. I know that they will be reading that one, so if there is enough interest or concern, we may have the opportunity to approach them again. I can't really do that if the questions are spread out over several sites with each site having several different methods of posting (forum, news, etc).

If -- for whatever reason -- you choose not to join us, then that's fine too but the time for division is long past.

Now don't lynch me, this is just my very humble opinion...

If OS5 is Intent and not the real AmigaOS I say it's finally time for everyone to embrace AROS completely and forget about Amiga Inc.

Or is it still just the name that matters? Are we up for another rollercoaster ride of anouncements of a new revolutionary "DE"? I for one had settled with the idea of Amiga as a hobby OS and nothing more. Is the community still up for the "taking over the world" stuff?
I know I'm not. Not that I've contributed with anything though..

Completly agree there.. It would be silly of them to name it Amiga OS5 if all the code has been replaced.

Hi Wayne, and thanks for the Q&A

A valid point, I've allready made a comment there as well, and I guess others will too.

Honestly I feel worse now than I did before the answers. Seems like as far as Bill is concerned OS4 is a dead end product. Basically outdated before it is even released.

Quote:

I've thought for a long time that when Amiga talked about the OS they meant something other than OS4. Bill's emphasis seems to be on OS5+. Nothing wrong with this as a business decision but I have absolutely NO interest in his OS5. I'd sooner switch to MorphOS or AROS.

So what really happens when OS4 is finally released? Will Hyperion be forever stuck developing 4.X? Seems like as soon as they release it Amiga will release 5.0 and poof... Hyperion looses the right to further develop the OS. If both OSes survive going forward there is going to be massive confusion in the marketplace.

All in all I think this is a bad situation that is just going to get worse. We may finally see OS4 released and hardware available just to have the platform abandoned.

I agree. I have a feeling that AROS is the only way forward.

I think it may be the case that Troika want to have a solid functioning motherboard before they make contact. From what Bill said, it would make more sense if they did it that way.

There was a lot of interesting information in there. It is interesting to know that Dennis is not the only one working on new classic hardware.

It's cool to know that while Mac fans were talking about MacOS running on the PDA, Amiga OS4 was running on it in secret. I really hope they can get something sorted.

Also good to know that they are open to Amiga OS running on the PS3.

I'm also wondering about how OS5 relates to OS4. I was under the impression that OS5 was supposed to be a continuation of OS4 that merged with Amiga DE. I'd be dissapointed if it was just a more advanced version of Amiga DE.

At this point he hasn't said what OS5 is based on. They started work on it in 2004 so it could be built on OS3/OS4 code. It could also be based on Amiga DE, or something totally different. We'll have to wait and see.

Hans

17. "It was said any further AmigaOS version was going to be developed in-house by Amiga Inc., this means that you will have to provide support for it and the means for its promotion and distribution. Is this still true, if so, what are the plans for development from Hyperion's work on AmigaOS 4.0?"

Bill McEwen -- In April 2004 Amiga began development of OS 5. The team has expanded and we are in the process of adding some more talent to the group. We have designed OS 5 so that we can get portions of the working product in the hands of the SDA developers so that we can expedite the creation of content and services for this new platform. The SDA developers have been very helpful in guiding us from a developer perspective what their needs are as we move forward.

OS 4 is in beta , and OS 5 is under construction from 2004???

After all this I'm kinda nervous now. What do we have to look forward to? Anything?

I have been a staunch Amiga supporter since the Commodore Bankruptcy. Now I find myself slightly shaken. Anyone else feeling the same?

Why not? What do we know about it? I didn't get enough out of the answers to perceive any definition of what OS5 is, what features it does or does not have, if it will run on AmigaOnes or whatever other new PPC hardware may appear, apps compatibility, etc. Other than some possible but vague relationship to Anywhere, the product is undefined for us.

With regard to the hardware question, I can only state that I have responded to “every” query that has been sent. So that we do not have vendors appear and disappear leaving the end user holding equipment that can not be supported, Amiga asks a series of questions of the person who has made the request. I can tell you that with the exception of two groups, nobody has ever returned with acceptable answers. There are a great many people who dearly want to help, and they really want to see and produce new hardware, but several times we have seen answers where they are relying on some unknown event or friends with credit cards to be able to support the effort. This is not acceptable, and we have to locate those companies or individuals that have the correct supply chain and understanding of how to create and support hardware. Of course it is always easier to make a blanket announcement that Amiga “never” responds, or I never heard back from them.

Why is "every" in quotes? He never responded to my own personal queries which I sent to the prescribed technologylicensing@amiga.com contact, 3 or 4 attempts, around April/May 2005. I received no response, no questions, no interest in current revenues, no corrupt emails, empty messages, nothing at all. Can all possible responses fromthem over that time have been eaten by a black hole out there? I used YAM at the time and did not have spam filtering, so it didn't get eaten by my own computer. He later said something about starting to look for a hardware partner in November 2005, after I'd given up on them having an interest in doing business with anyone.

Best to reply at the amiga.org site if you want a chance of getting an answer.
