posted by DJBase on 4-Jun-2007 12:21:02 (3776 reads)
We are happy to announce the availability of Jabberwocky V1.7 for
AmigaOS 3.x, AmigaOS4.x and MorphOS.

Jabberwocky is a free instant messaging system, with Server modules (transports) allowing cross messaging between other networks (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, etc).

Changes since version 1.6:
* Changed some MUI includes to be consistant with the rest of the
Jabberwocky sourcecode files.
* Updated copyright notice in catalog files. Updated several string
definitions in Italian catalog translation file.
* Added workaround for OS4 network includes conflict with clib2
network includes. The files & file structure of clib2 network
includes are now different than those defined in the Amiga OS4 includes.
* Disabled vapor_toolkit.library check in the MorphOS build. Latest
MorphOS ships without this lib. MUI4 has its own TextInput.mcc and
does not use this lib.
* Unused variables removed from sources.
* Eliminated unused includes.
* Added OS4 socket library open/close since bsdsocket.library is not
longer automatically opened by standard libauto.
* Added patched muimaster.h include file required for 68k Jabberwocky
compile.
* Updated makefile and includes for new OS4 SDK.
* Changed constant definitions for XML ID strings to make them easier
to identify in the Jabberwocky source.
* Added ID attribute to version (jabber:iq:version) requests and
responses for the benifit of other Jabber clients (like Exodus) that
rely on the ID attributes to identify Jabber iq requests.
* Added new functions to retrieve Jabber server agent list using
service discovery methods.
* Added functions to obtain agent information from Jabber server with
service discovery methods.
* Added new constant definitions and function prototype in support of
service discovery methods for obtaining Jabber server agent information.
* Added ID attribute to agent registration XML.
* Made numerous changes to sources in order to implement SASL
authentication required by some new Jabber servers.
* Changed size check in console logger to use size sent in the call.
* Changed size for connection checks to 2 since at least one server
is sending 2 spaces for the checks.
* Added several defines to support SASL authentication.
* Added Jabber namespace definitions not included in Iksemel library.
* Removed unused MSG_CHAT constant and moved MSG_READ constant.
* Added return value of IKS_HOOK to receive function so Jabberwocky
can tell if stream:features is being received following initial
connect header.
* Fixed long standing bug that can cause 68k Jabberwocky enforcer hit
or crash.
* Updated header files for use with new Iksemel library.
* Updated Jabberwocky main sources for use with new Iksemel library.
Numerous changes in return values and function names were made. *
Updated Iksemel library to latest released version and added
necessary Amiga modifications.

Amessage dont work, icq lamp just lights. No users. Jabber.dk i cant register to any icq transport. Jabber.fr shows both icq and msn users but not all. Wookiechat with bitlbee server is the only that works for now at least on my os4 system and it works really great. But i understand there is not time for coding on jabber ;(

Well, I don't know, I use jabber.freenet.de as server with ICQ, AIM and Yahoo without any problems.

Great!

Hope I can get it to work again. I have always been using myjabber.net but since a years or so back all users appear offline when using it. If I need to move I need to move the contacts as well though....

Which server do you ppl recommend for ICQ and MSN?

BTW. How about a list-of-changes which doesn't include internal programming changes? Not that interesting to users.... What I like to know is: Have you included signal(SIGINT,SIG_IGNORE); or signal(SIGINT,do_clean_exit); yet so that JabberWocky doesn't crash everytime when issuing a NetShutDown on OS4 which sends Ctrl-C to all bsdsocket applications?

There are numerous Jabber servers that Jabberwocky will work with. IM programs for MSN, ICQ or AIM only need to work with a single professionally run server. There are hundreds of Jabber servers which can be individually customized. Just as there are lots of poorly written WEB pages, there are lots of unusually configured Jabber servers. Additionally, there are some servers that will only accept a secure connection (TLS) and Jabberwocky lacks that capability.

As far as changes go, I'm lucky I had the time to cut and paste change notes from my SourceForge CVS commits. If more people were working on the program the results would probably be better. For the past several years I've done all the documentation, programming and debugging. I'm ready to move on and just want to get a stable release so I can do so. If there are significant bugs in v1.7 that I can fix we will release an update (v 1.7.1) in a couple of months.

I tested Jabberwocky 1.7 and the program just disconnects and exits cleanly when I use the Netshutdown command. However, I don't really have a network set up and am on a dialup connection. Will setting SIGINT affect a Ctrl-C issued from the command line? I don't want to disable a command line abort, only the RoadShow abort signal. Where is SIG_IGNORE defined? I searched the entire OS4 SDK and can't find it.

Personally, I have to question why RoadShow is sending break signals to all the applications when it shuts down. I don't remember Miami doing that.

@Xenic

The correct signal line is this:
signal(SIGINT,SIG_IGN);

It blocks the built-in Unix-like Ctrl-C handling. You can still Wait(SIGBREAKF_CTRL_C) the normal Amiga way.

No, Miami didn't send Ctrl-C to the tasks that had opened bsdsocket.library, but I guess RoadShow does this to be able to remove the lib from memory and shutdown completely or something.

However, I can't seem to register my MSN transport on jabbernet.dk using 'my%email.com@msn.jabbernet.dk' I never get any response after clicking Register. I tried to login to the online MSN network/messenger thing and it (still) works with my email and password.

ICQ worked fine though, as did the arexx script for moving contacts! What is the PyMSN??

I have never found a Jabber server with all transports working reliably all the time. Since running a Jabber server is not typically a profit motivated endeavor, most of them (and associated transports) are not monitored very closely. However, it is possible to use transports at servers other than the server where you have established an account. I use Jabber.org which has no IM Transports but is a reliable Jabber server. All my transports are registered at other servers. If a transport stops working, I just remove it and register a transport somewhere else. That could be a problem if you have a lot of contacts through a transport. You will need to remove them and resubscribe to them through the new transport. Try this:

Open the Agents window with the Jabberwocky "Windows/Agents.." menu item. In the string gadget to the left of the "Visit" button and enter a Jabber server ID (like 12jabber.com). Then click the "Visit" button. You can usually register the Transports that show up in the list. Some servers block users of other servers from registering their transports but most don't.
