Software News   Software News : DirectoryOpus 4.18.12 OS4
   posted by zerohero on 17-Oct-2008 16:26:59 (8821 reads)
*** Released 4.18.12 fixing one nasty crash bug that crept in there at the end, and the "PrintDir" command.

A quick release of the legendary file manager DirectoryOpus 4 that fixes the crashes that occur when opening external modules on OS 4.1. Launching ConfigOpus and DOpus_Print should now work as usual again.

Other things fixed are all internal, like changed a few function calls to use new 4.x features. Also some of the requesters are now using ReAction instead. A lot more work is needed but since this is quite an important the release is here now. (Read more)

Sources for this release is available here.
Archive available here.

Special thanks to Colin Wenzel (as usual) for helping me out (again).

Regards,
Joachim Birging

Hmm... I tried DOpus years ago and found it much too involved for me. I've been using DiskMaster 2 all these years. I think DM2 may have reached an end of development. I don't really know. I never hear anything about it any longer.

I will give DOpus another try since they are still working on it for OS4. I like that.

When I gave up my Amiga :( they were still promising an OS4 version of Magellan -- has anything come about from that yet??

(And as much as I love my Mac -- which, amazingly, is more than my Amigas -- I do miss Directory Opus terribly...and Magellan...)

I am surprised that you found DOpus a more complicated beast to use. From their base installs, DM2 and DOpus4 are very similar, but IMO, DOpus4 is a much more powerful and configurable tool. To be honest, I have always preferred using DOpus4 over Magellan - even when I has Magellan installed, I still ran Dopus 4 under it for a majority of tasks, and eventually just stayed using a normal OS3.9 WB with DOpus 4.

It is nice however to see work still being made on the public sources for DOpus4, so that OS4 users can still benefit from this great application.

@zerohero

Thanks for your continued work with DOpus4, the latest version is working great, but there is a very insignificant thing that doesn't work anymore. The "Version DOpus" menu item.

Too involved?
Who ties your shoelaces for you?

You've got to give it another go, it's a great piece of software.
Can't do without it.

It's really old and yet windoze explorer comes nowhere near it for usefulness.

After all this time, I'm quite surprised.

If I used windoze at home, I would definitely try the version of DOpus for that.

Many thanks for the update.
The only cloud on the Sam/OS4.1 horizon has just been dispersed.

Yes, in one of the earlier versions I removed that command. It's kind of merged into the "About" requester. I had other plans for the "Version" command, but haven't implemented it yet.

@zerohero

I can't get the command PrintDir to work.

I have it set as a command and PrintDir {F}, with do all files and run asynchronously selected, but I can't get it to work.

Printing a file seems to work fine just PrintDir.

Any hints what I am doing wromg?

@Swoop

It's not certain you're doing anything wrong at all. Just the other day I noticed parts of of the source was commented out. Must have been left there since before I ported the Print Module. I'll see if this is something similar.

EDIT:
Took a long look into my sources and the function "PrintDir" is completely missing from my sources I'll have to investigate further to see if it was a case of me removing them or something else has happened....

EDIT AGAIN:
Did "PrintDir" work with the 68k version of DOpus? In the CVS sources of them the only place it could happen was as an AREXX command? Unless DOpus is doing something ugly somewhere.

@zerohero

under config/system/modules there are two modules shown

1. configopus
2. print, printdir

Also when configuring buttons PrintDir is shown as a command.

I am sure it worked under 4.16-os4, but i will check it out and come back to you.

Thanks for the quick response.

@zerohero

PrintDir works from DOpus416JRbin. This is the readme:-

Short: Great filemanager from GP Software
Author: Jonathan Potter (original version), Jacek Rzeuski (under GPL license)
Uploader: Jacek Rzeuski (jrzeuski@neptun.gdansk.tpsa.pl)
Type: biz/dopus
Requires: KS 3.0+, 68020+
Version: 4.16
Replaces: DOpus415JRbin.lha

You can find original GPL'ed sources in biz/dopus directory of Aminet. Same
applies to the sources of this version (GPL requirement)

There's mailing list to discuss about my port of Directory Opus 4:
- subscribe: opus4-subscribe@egroups.com
- browse via WWW: http://www.egroups.com/lists/opus4/

Actual beta version can be downloaded from http://dopus.amiga.pl/

I hope that helps.

@Swoop

Please try this executable:

http://www.zerohero.se/DirectoryOpus

It's only the exe, but it should have the "PrintDir" command that is in the latest os3 sources.
