| Seehund,
So, if I keep asking you, you'll keep telling me not to buy it, right?
And if I don't ask, you'll keep telling me not to buy it, right?
So, AmigaWorld, is it okay for Seehund to keep telling people not to buy Adams product, that he toiled on, night and day, and any spare time he had?
Hey Adam, I cancel my order because I was told it's not "good idea" by someone who knows, certainly more than I.. |

| @Seehund Since you feel the need to keep reminding us why the OS4/A1 situation is sooooo crap (hey, we would often agree with you, but most of us got over it), what is your solution? Why not be constructive, rather than destructive? Please take that as a challenge, since it's not intended as a personal attack. _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. Hello,
I have found it extremely interesting to read the responses on the various messages boards, yet I feel compelled to write the following so everyone understands the underlying intention of the product announcement.
1) The CPU modules are not meant to "liberate" the AmigaOS to an open, inexpensive, and available hardware platform.
2) The CPU modules are not meant to, nor expected to compete pricewise with similar 3rd party accelerators for the PowerMac platform.
3) The CPU modules are not meant to cause debate as to whether AROS, MorhphOS, or AmigaOS is better.
4) The CPU modules are not meant to compete with speeds offered on x86 hardware.
5) The CPU modules are not meant to cure the sick, feed the hungry, or house the poor.
The main reason the CPU modules were created in the first place is to increase the number of active OS4 developers. The number of people who have had CPUs that failed (for whatever reason) and are sitting with non-useable AmigaOne boards are obvioiusly not active developers. Providing an option to buy these CPU modules means people will have the option to buy one of the two new modules or wait for others to upgrade and re-sell their functioning CPUs. I perceived a need for them and I've stepped up to the plate to supply them.
There are a few other requests that drove the decision making process as to which chip and which speed grade should be chosen:
1) Most people wanted Altivec capability. This drove the choice of the G4 derivatives.
2) Most people wanted more speed. This drove the highest end speed grade option that I could get reasonably priced.
3) In order to take advantage of increased clock rate, the 7448 was chosen due to its substantially larger L2 cache which will more than make up for the 100/133MHz FSB on the AmigaOnes. Similarly, the 200MHz FSB capability of the 7448 allows the potential use of significantly more advanced PowerPC Host bridges available today in upcoming products without having to re-engineer a CPU solution for said product. Similarly, the 7448 offers diverse price points at the different speed grades allowing more flexible manufacturing in the long term.
If my intention was to create the most inexpensive CPU solution, I could easily have chosen a chip like the IBM 750Cxe(r) at a significantly lower clockspeed at which the pricepoint which would have put the PCB and the connector at the top of the list regarding components cost. It stil would be more expensive than compareable Mac products.
The overwhelming e-mail response has been for the 1.7GHz CPU module. The response ratio has been so significantly skewed that it may not make any sense to offer the 1GHz speed and that I should go for larger 1.7GHz volumes to help bring down the piece costs. I am pretty confident that price hasn't been the largest factor in making that decision, rather the fact that it's a fast, cooler running G4 solution. I'm not holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to buy them. I'm not price gouging, nor taking advantage of a small market. I am giving choice to people who at present do not have choice.
Will you see the product on May 22/2006? Yes! Will I support warranty issues? Yes, of course! Will it be RoHS compliant? Yes!
Sincerely,
Adam Kowalczyk

You may read what I wrote here.
Look at ChrisH's reply above, that is how one can tackle any said opinion of another user.
Stop taking out on the site. Do you wish to remain here at all? (A question and not a rhetorical one)
And especially after I had said that everyone needs to cool it... which leads me to the more important issue...

Thanks for this clarification. This was almost better than a press release
Btw you keep hinting (between the lines) of a product where these modules could be used. Care to elaborate? Last edited by Samwel on 27-Apr-2006 at 10:23 AM.

No. I haven't told anyone this. Nobody has told anyone this, as far as I can see. And I can't "keep" telling anyone this, because i never said it in the first place.
GET IT?

This has not happened. But if it had happened, of course it would be okay! This isn't a cult, is it? Read the site's ToS some day. _________________ Oh, bother.

Thank you sincerely for all of your efforts. I understand the motivation expressed in your post #263, and I concur. I spent some time in the last year reading/writing to people without functioning A1s, who were in virtual agony over the inability to participate with the rest of us.
@thread
I continually notice that some people choose to focus entirely on the tangible value (the price) of the card itself, and not much else. What is the value you would place on that replacement CPU if the purchaser of the new card was now able to: (1) Diagnose a problem and/or formulate a solution that benefits us all? (2) Engage in development of software that benefits us all? (3) Simply become a satisfied user again with the resulting positive PR that might well arise from that satisfaction?
Think about the different reasons we are all here and all the different positive results that can come from each of these "restored" users' participation. This is much about investing in people, knowledge, and potential for future growth. When we cease to put a value on the human element here, -that- will be the time to talk about cashing in our chips and leaving the casino.

This is good to hear. Hopefully it will make a big enough difference that even people like me might be able to afford it.

| i thought you may be interested in that bbrv comment :
"Unfortunately, the 7448 needs too much power and runs too hot for the Pegasos to function at a cycle level that would be interesting this group. The 7448 does not fall within the performance parameters originally announced for the chip. We promoted the 7448 and invested significant effort in a design built around it. It is not suitable for the PegasosPPC. The bottom line is that it needs twice the power for 20% more performance. It is not worth it."

Interesting. But twice the power and 20% more performance when compared to what? He's definitely not talking about the difference between an 800 MHz 7447 and a 1.7 GHz 7448 as the performance increase should be way more than 20%.

| @ackcontrols Ok, that's been the lengthest post I've ever seen you do
Thanks for the additional info. If the price difference is really significant, or there is a way to drop the 1GHz including with an 'inferiror' CPU, I expect it would still generate sales.
Were my CPU to die on my A1, I would have a hard choice, but for me wouldn't be the 1.7GHz...either the cheapest replacement I could find (although yes, I am willing to pay more for AltiVec), or wait for the PV or Amy.
I hope those that have expressed interest in the 1.7GHz at that price are truly capable of, and planning on,, spending that amount when these become available. I can afford it pretty easily, but I personally am not sure I can 'justify' it, to myself.
Either way, looking forward to seeing some benchmarks..and of course *cough* PV News. _________________ Are we not done with the same silly arguments and flames yet??!

I guess there will be at least some cpus available as soon the 1.7 is released. In the worst case I can sell you one of my G3 cpus I don't think that everybody interessted in the 1.7 has a dead board. And for the price the 1.7 costs, it's hard to not to try to sell the old one... _________________ AmigaOne XE G3/933/VIA/FM801/R200 (fixed), G3SE/600/Voodoo3/Sil680/RTL8139/SBLive!
