Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (140656 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

@falemagn

With all respect...

I'm guite content with os4 and really happy, that it is published at least.

You don't have any hw to use os4 and if I guess correctly, you never will. So you motives are bit sad.

Get a life. Go out and try, it is not dangerous and not even hurt you. If your awnet-behaving IS your life, you need help, badly.

It is sad that you kind of "intelligent, well behaving, allways polite" ppl make their best to spoil others fun.

have go, try life outside...

"deeply unclear"? To you maybe, but not to me.

I'd be the first to admit I don't keep my eye on the OS4 scene the way I used to, but I can't find any reference to anything more concrete than vauge statements about OS4.0x or whatever coming out in future.

Developers (potential or actual) generally feel a lot more comfortable if they know who's in charge, what they are planning to do and when they intend to do it. And lets not even get into the uncertainty caused by Amiga Inc's ramblings about OS5.

Quote:
And as I pointed out before (several times) Hyperion is no hardware company.

Indeed. I never said they were. But OS4 is nothing without hardware, so it's an important issue. The current lack of hardware basically negates OS4 as any kind of platform for serious (ie, non-hobby) development.

You guys can't fix the hardware problem, I understand that. And that's a problem in itself - Amiga Inc's control of hardware licensing clouds OS4's future. They can (and often seem to be trying to) cut off OS4's oxygen supply at will. Any OS that has a future dependant on two seperate companies who's goals and priorities seem to be quite far apart is going to have real trouble going anywhere.

I'd love to be running and developing for AmigaOS again instead of Windows and Linux. The release of OS4 isn't going to make that happen, and because of the factors I've mentioned doesn't even make it more likely to happen.

I'm not trying to diss OS4 or the people behind it. Just venting about a bad situation that doesn't seem to be going to get better any time soon.

Spare me the hypocrisy, at least.

Glad for you. I fail to see, however, how's this even remotely related to my (and not only mine) questions.

My motives... Always with my motives. So, care to tell me what my motives would be, since you seem to know them so well? If you lot can't help but put it on the personal level, at least have the decency of saying what is that you think for real.

Oh dear, how typical... I've lost count of how many times I've heard this song already.

One "dares" to ask a question which happens to be uncomfortable to some, and here comes the horde of "I-know-it-all" type of people who think they are entitled to insult that person and desume from hist posts what his life is like, or even that he's got no life at all. And that just because that person asked one freakin' question!

I can't think of any adjective to define such behaviour in a polite way, unfortunately. What amazes me is how many of you behave like that... I can't even be bothered to try and put things in their correct perspective because you're just hopeless. It's astounding how one single damned question can translate itself in such a big mess, a mess that you yourselves have created!

And now, if you and the likes of you still want to insult or otherwise personally attack me, feel free to use my private mail box for that purpose. I reserve the right to ignore you or give you the answer that you deserve, one by one.

... and that is what Hyperion did with your question. They give you the answer you deserve and ignore you now. Why shouldn't they have the same rights as you?

So please, stop acting like a little child, crying: 'I want! Iwant! Iwant!' You're getting predictable - even as you often change your avatar (hope this isn't an anankasm).

Yeah -- we can all remember when they said Christmas for OS4 all those eons so long ago. They were right, they forget the year of course.

Seriously ! THANKS ALL!

I want nothing! All I've done was asking a question and accepting whatever answer would come. The problem arose when people like you started questioning my motives and insulting me, like you keep doing despite I've explictely asked direct those claims in my personal mail box and despite the moderators have asked to not talk of this issue here any longer.

It's not my fault if you lot keep insulting me. Stop insulting and you'll stop getting answers back.

As for my avatar, I've changed it only 4 times during my entire staying on this site. Isn't there anything more interesting to talk about than my avatar, over here? Goes to show how really grown up some of you guys are.

How about this for a change: I both congratulate Hyperion on a job well done and getting this significant update on OS4 out the door, and at the same time am interested in knowing the answers to Umisef's and Falemagn's questions? Anybody?

The fact that I'm interested to know (I'm not saying I'm entitled, just interested) doesn't in any way negate the fact that I'm truly congratulating them on getting this update out the door. From what I hear it is a major step forwards again and for that the guys at Hyperion and all the other people who have worked on OS4 deserve major respect.

While falemagn is often not good at expressing things politely, in this case I do feel that he is doing a pretty excellent job given the bad circumstances. I don't know why Rogue won't give a straight (or polite) answer to us (falemagn, umisef, me & others), but it does seem rather worrying IMHO...

But given it's clear that Rogue refuses to actually answer the (really quite simple) question, I think that falemagn would best give-up for the moment, and hopefully others will refrain from the topic either (and so drag things on). We'll just have to see how the die rolls (or doesn't) in a few months time, when Samantha (or however) is completed...

Hyperion press release states that AmigaOS4 was released in may 2004 !! That's quite a rewriting of history isn't it ? It's like saying that Windows Vista was released in July 2005 when the first developper pre release beta was given to a few beta testers...

What isn't clear about new hardware being available in the press release? There will be new hardware to run Amiga OS 4.0 and an announcement will be made in the first week of January, and the source may surprise you.

It's Apple right.

They allow the MiniMac G4 design to be reused for an Amiga system. Tons of second hand hardware thingies will then be available.

@PulsatingQuasar

Please don't speculate about the speculation !

Maybe 2007 will be full of new surprises, Well won't get excited yet until it's actually available to buy, whatever that may be!

Not quite right. You got not one but three answers from main developers, Enthilza (comment #118 ) and Rogue (comments #122 and #127), but you are not simply "accepting" them, despite they are cristal clear, direct answers.

Saluditos,

Ferrán

Several solutions based on previously existing Apple hardware were looked at, but the logistics of acquring the hardware for non-DIYers was going to be difficult to manage. Personally, the documentation aspect for driver development wasn't a big issue, but gathering sufficient quantities of motherboards efficiently and cost effectively wasn't going to work out. It may have served as a short term solution, but the goal has always been to produce a board that could be manufactured to meet RoHS compliance and not be at the mercy of difficult to get parts or parts becoming obsolete due to the PC world changing so quickly.

My prediction for 2007 is that more is going to happen on the hardware side for the Amiga OS than the last 10 years.

They are all but "cristal clear" answers. In fact, they prompted me to ask for clarifications, which I did with comment #154 and to which I got no reply but only insults.

And I'm not alone here having asked for clarifications, so it looks like some of you guys have some sort of personal issues against me, which you'd better express via private messages instead of polluting a thread.
