Hardware News   Hardware News : Troika NG Progress Report
   posted by Troika on 26-May-2006 2:36:43 (36537 reads)
We thought a progress report was in order as we have some very good news. After much development we are happy to report that version 1.4 of Amy'05 is nearly complete. Our next progress report will contain lots of information about Amy, along with the much awaited Photo's!

For many of the first adopters of Eyetech Amiga One models, their needs and wants have grown past the specifications of the machines they are currently using and they wish to upgrade to a more modern motherboard design.

Our original intent with project “Prometheus” was to design and build several low cost lines of motherboards, built on proven technology. The Amy’05 design would be followed by a more powerful design. When we designed Amy’05 we did not envisage the changes that have taken place in the Power PC market, most notable, Apple's shift from PowerPC to Intel that has presented both problems as well as opportunities for Troika.

While developing Amy’05 we have been investigating several good opportunities for the existing Amiga user base. We have found others with similar business interests to ours, from which we were able to form new alliances which has allowed us to begin due diligence procedures for purchasing a design of a higher end motherboard. Acquiring the rights to this motherboard will allow us to bring a higher end board to market far quicker than if we were to design one from the ground up. Also, by forming new alliances we will be able to bring the per unit cost of this motherboard down - a saving that we wish to pass on to you.

We would like to show you photographs of our higher end motherboard but our NDA does not permit this. However, we are able to show you pictures that have been cropped to conceal the board’s identity.

Provided we are able to do this, we plan on offering this higher end motherboard as a compliment to our first line of Amy motherboards.

We have been down this road before, with announcements based on assurances from third parties who have failed to deliver. Amy’05 has encountered problems but they are all in the past.

Between now and then we shall post regular progress reports, instead of intermittent press releases and promises.

Motherboard with Tsi-109 & 7448 .

Our Sound system.

@hatschi,

In contrast to Adam, I've never heard that anyone from Troika is involved in OS-development. So theoretically someone would need to pay 20.000 EUR for porting.

So if you want to try porting the OS yourself, Hyperion will waive the 20,000 pancake porting fee?? Is there a link to this?

I don't have a link, but Adam is a member of the OS4 development team so he has access to the source code and can therefore port it himself. Effectively he is covering the costs of porting by investing his own time and energy to do it. If you want Hyperion to do the porting, the programmers have to be paid to do the job (the amount is estimated to be $20,000). It doesn't make sense to pay Hyperion for porting something when you're the one that actually does the work. Remember, it's the cost of porting, not a license fee we're talking about.

What progress would that be?

Pre-announcement announcement executive summary:
The Amy 05 is cancelled. We're thinking about selling someone else's board. Stay tuned for more announcements.

Maybe the PCI connector end on this PCI mezzanine single-board computer from VadaTech? Maybe. Why would anyone care. :P

I'd like to take the opportunity of making a pre-announcement of a possibly planned project that's currently under pretty serious consideration, sort of.

Motherboard:

My sound system:

BTW, a stick of RAM can look like this:

Between now and then I shall post regular announcement-announcements and pointless pictures, instead of intermittent press releases and promises. Maybe this way we can still keep stringing some people along.

Yup.

EVERY SINGLE ONE

Because of this fact, Big bash has never made a profit worth talking about but we feel we would rather pump the money into the community than Fleece it !! (couldn't think of a better term)

BB1 made quite a good profit because Alan Redhouse very generously DONATED the µA1 to the raffle.

The profits of which were then handed over to "Sponsor a Dev".

Looking forward to further updates/announcements of announcements for that promising board!

Is that really the fantastic "Mystous" sound system you are using there?
I also congratulate you for choosing "off-the-shelf RAM" instead of ZIP-RAM.

Thank you! It is at times like these that THE TRUE Amigans get to show their colours! Stay tuned! Hang on! RSN!

Actually, to paraphrase Alan Redhouse, we have borrowed the latest audio socket technology from Foxconn in the form of the purpose-designed "3.5 mm" socket. It'll blow your mind!

Well, we only inlcuded the RAM pic to shut up the nay-sayers and show that we're actually making tangible progress. But yes, finally The Community can take advantage of cheap, ubiquitous hardware!*

*To be used in conjunction with AmigaOS, it is required that the DIMM has a machine-readable serial number. Such AmiRAM® will only be available through licensed dealerships. We feel that consumer protection is of utmost importance. Also, it'll stop piracy. With AmiRAM®, the Amiga desktop^H^H^H^H^H^H^H embedded platform is primed to move forwards.

Yours truly,
Maskirovka Hardware, Very Ltd.
Stay tuned!®

What grass are you smoking ? The cpu is on the picture (it's the smaller part above the TSI109 (the big one in the middle)).

@Jorge

"The CPU" is in the picture, but "an x86 CPU" may be cropped out.
Wouldn't want people to know about the built-in x86 bridgeboard now would we? Compeditors mustn't know until it's too late.

Well... LOL! We should start a contest about who announces a more funny project (with pictures). But I'm afraid Elbox would win, they have the greatest experience in vapor-ware, althrough as I see some ppl try hard to be better :>

Check the complete Elbox product list and you will see that they announced AND have produced about 50 products for Amiga computers. So you must be joking when you say that they have the greatest experience in vapourware... because ONE of their products (Dragon 1200) is delayed.

SharkPPC must definitely not be vapourware because Elbox has clearly stated that: "production of SharkPPC cards will start as soon as the final version of AmigaOS4.0 for A1 is released." So they did not miss the deadline.

If in doubt, see Vaporware definition in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporware

Excellent! Looks like anybody can show (blurry) pictures of a few computer pieces. It doesn't mean anything.

I thought that the true expert in vapourware was the Duke Nukem Forever team. They've been developing their product since 1997 and people are still waiting for its release.

Well, Seehund´s picture isn´t that blurry I would mean... I can read something very interesting in the board picture. It states "OMG Amy´08!!!!!!!!!!" in the bottom right field of the jumper settings description

But you´re right, it is very easy to do some snapshots for baiting people... we´ll see if Troika is able to deliver anything real or if ACK will do the race (what I believe will happen. within two more weeks, perhaps, maybe...)

@Seehund

I have just noticed that the OMG AMY 08!!!! written on the silk-screen layer of your board doesn't fit into the box it's supposed to. Very unprofessional. You expect me to believe that your board will work if you can't even scale a white box to fit? Vapour! Vapour I say!

Oh, and Amy'05 isn't cancelled, it's just been "revised". Dumping your design and using someone else's is called a "major revision".

Hans

No offense, but I see a pattern here:

1) Announcement by a company
1a) Any number of people call for pictures. "It's vapor without it"
2) Company releases pictures
2a) Any number of people call for prototype hardware. "It's vapor without it".

Let's wait and see what 3) and 3a) will be.

I will believe nothing until its available at my dealer. And by the way, I don't see pictures of the product. Just some cut-off of some hardware.

@Tjaoz

You again? Elbox can say what they want about the Sonnet Crescendo. The fact is: There is no AmigaOS port to it and there won't be one until Hyperion receives a board and payment from Elbox. Everything else is irrelevant.

Where are the MPEG2 drivers, BTW? The IDE ones?

Your precious Elbox is not a bunch of saints, Tjaoz, ESPECIALLY when it comes to marketing (see: MediatorPCI 1200 "DMA"... they still claim that it uses DMA, don't they? )
