| Can you post some benchmarks of these new CPU modules to demonstrate how much of a speed increase we will get over our existing modules? |

I would imagine the benchmarks will be available at that time. |

Oddly, demand for the 1.7GHz model is higher than I expected. It might end up being a 50/50 split when it comes to the manufacturing run. The CPU modules will be also used in an upcoming product, but demand is still expected to be too low to get any significant economies of scale. |
Is this upcoming product something from you or something from another company? |

Hi Samwel,
The cocept of CISC vs. RISC is that RISC was done because it is faster, overall, than CISC is...... Therefore, and it only occurred to me now, except for the ram holding us back, this computer may be the quivalent of a ~2.3 GHz P4!!!!!
Combined with AOS4.0's power, that may be closer to 2.7 GHZ or more! (And add in the better overall user experience, too!!!)
Everybody NEEDS the 1.7 GHz model!! |

Actually, the concept of RISC was that it was simpler - hence 'Reduced'. This used to mean simpler, faster, more power efficient - but that'd be hard thing to claim these days. All recent x86 designs borrowed RISC principles (albeit with an x86 front-end), and the PowerPC never really was a traditional RISC design anyway (apart from the fixed instruction size and the load-store architecture).
In fact, the reason that RISC was 'Reduced' was because, given the transistor budgets of the day, the only way to make a pipelined, superscalar microprocessor was to reduce instruction count.
The whole RISC/CISC debate is a nonsense today, if it ever really made any sense outside of a laboratory.

More like the lack of a competitive northbridge. The Articia doesn't even provide good bandwidth to the RAM we have.

That the usual Amiga user comment.. Just because the OS behaves faster doesn't mean the operations go faster, think about that. Also most "CISC" CPU's today use RISC internally anyway so there's not much difference really.
When comparing, which P4 model do you mean? Northwood? Well I used to have a 2.4GHz northwood P4 PC and it was pretty quick I must say.. Several times faster than my G3 800MHz anyway.. Although OS4 feels much faster due to its lightweight. But the very instant you start anything that needs a little CPU power you'll notice how slow the G3 really is. In comparison the P4 behaves just as it did before starting the same type of program. This might very well be because of driver issues aswell as slow CPU.
But if we could get a motherboard with a nicer northbridge, Tundra 110 for example, we would really have a serious computer with the 7448 1.7GHz DDR, SATA, USB2.0, 200MHz FSB and PCI-E.. Would be nice eh? _________________ /Harry

How about cutting out the "over enthusiastic crap" until you start using your a1 seriously. You havent even installed any of the prerelease updates yet. |

Why not? And why then do always defend OS4 everywhere when you haven't tested it even?!? _________________ /Harry

With any luck the quietness from Troika means that they're redesigning the board to use a TS108 northbridge rather than the TS107. Otherwise, stuffing a 7448 in there isn't going to perform a whole lot better than on an A1.

Well I think Tundra 107 will outperform Articia S by a fairly good margin. Especially the memory speed will go up by 20-50% making the faster CPU's like 7447, 7447A and 7448 work much much faster than with Articia S.
But I get your point though. Tundra 108 or newer would be perfered because of the FSB speed these offers. _________________ /Harry

Also, the TS108 supports the more efficient MPX bus protocol, whereas the TS107 only supports the 60x protocol.
