why is there explicitely written "4.0"? does this not cover future releases or won't there be future releases?

@Kronos

While I normally enjoy reading your posts the ones in this thread seem to be here only to bait. I would like to ask you to stop doing that, please? Maybe I misunderstood you completely, if so, maybe you could explain your posts in a PM to me?.

Next there is the question why the felt the need for this announcement announcement, instead of just spilling the beans or just waiting that extra week.

This is not an announcement of an announcement, this is an announcement that ACube will be distributing OS4 for a range of PPC computers including A1's and classic.

Joachim Birging

Maybe, just maybe.... The Classic PPC licensed OS4 CD will just happen to "accidentally" boot and install on the SAM440 board that ACube also happen to distribute?

Or can SAM be re-named Amiga One, and sold as there exists a license
for the A1 ??

Good news, it is very positive to see a new partnership developing.
I look forward to reading the subsequent announcement.

I don't see an announcement on Amiga.inc website though. Perhaps they got confused with the simulataneous announcement, and thought they should release the news at 17.00 Indian time

I believe the agreement was just for OS 4.0 while Amiga INC kept the full right for future versions.

This is interesting. ACube are expanding their commercial scope.

An implication is that they have done some kind of deal with Amiga Inc. to be announced

If true another implication is that hardware vendors will deal with ACube to get OS4.

AFAIK the AmigaONE name is a trademark owned by Amiga Inc (Though which Amiga Inc is anyones guess!), so without paying them to use that mark it is not allowed to be used.

Don't Hyperion only have the rights to OS4, OS4.1 and 4.whatever, while Amiga Inc. have OS5? Which'll be different +i386 based anyway?

I can see this turning into another RISCOS debacle. With two different companies selling two products with the same name that were originally based off the same code a few generations ago.

come on, everyone knows that OS5 will just be AROS rebranded and flogged for $$$.

The licence allows it.

@NoelFuller

Ok, this might be a reason. Have these cases been managed by Hyperion themselves until now or didn't those users have the chance to get a legal copy afterwards?

If you're not going to contribute to this thread in any positive way I would like to kindly ask you to refrain from posting. Baiting is not acceptable, even though we have loosened the moderation a bit.

Hyperion have never handled it, or even replied to enquirers, at least with respect to those who have posted here about registration, but Rogue has, from time to time, as he did mine, and under protest.

Only a few days back he posted the info he needs, but on an earlier occasion he pointed out he is not Hyperion, but a person under contract to Hyperion re software creation, not a clerical assistant. I suspect ACube will have the necessary assistants.

I suspect by the way that our speculations as to what these carefully worded statements may mean will give the partners what they need to respond to in their next statement.

Wow just look at the nit-picking. Shall we discuss the significance of the use of a copyright symbol instead of the word copyight too? How about the spaces between Amiga, OS, and 4.0? That could be significant too.

This is NOT just an anouncement of an announcement. They annouced a partnership for distribution of Amiga OS 4.0 for a range of PowerPC computers that include the A1 and the classic Amiga. That's the announcement. More details will follow, but that's not the focus of the announcement.

Why did they announce it now, without the "further details"? Maybe they just want to let people know things are happening. People have been getting rather negative and depressed lately and loudly proclaiming that they're going to leave. This lets you know things are happening. "Shortly", can't be that long to wait can it?

Come on people, please keep things in perspective.

Hans

Of course it can. I thought you had been around for a while.

And what you call nitpicking is actually a discussion about
why Amiga Inc and the licence is not talked about in this news item,
is it a coincidence or is not ?
Stop overreacting.

I have been around for a while. ACube have a tendency to deliver what they say they will. I've also watched people tear every announcement to shreds, trying to read too much between the lines, and being totally WRONG.

What I call nitpicking, is agonizing over things such as individual word choice, etc. People don't always have a good reason why they used one word over another, or 4.0 instead of 4.x. I'm not over-reacting at all. I'm suggesting that people shouldn't try to read between the lines too much, or jump to conclusions.
