The board went "on tour" after this to Electronica, 2006 where it was seen by Jens Schoenfeld and Michael Boehmer. Article by Jens: here.
Current information concerning the board is on the Acube corporate website. http://amigaworld.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=3616

But I guess ACube being in direct partnership with Hyperion, and ACube being the official distributor of Amiga OS4, allows the two companies to loophole their way around the licensing issues... making the above point sorta moot |
I find the idea of a way to loophole around AI rather foul. I can't believe people are giving this an OK. It looks to me that that is what is about to happen. How can Amiga OS4 belong to Hyperion or the kernal to the Friedens when they clearly stated they looked at the original sources and Hyperion was under contract to AI for OS4 development? They let everybody look like fools argueing that OS4 is the real os vs MOS because OS4 is based on the original code. Now they claim the sources were of no use to them at all. What exactly belongs to AI after the buyback since every developer claims ownership of their part of the os? I am not defending AI at all but this looks like more posturing to me for the legal battle and has shades of BBRV type actions. How many will support Hyperion if AI claims the OS is illegal? I hope I am wrong on this issue but most nay sayers in the past have been proven right and alot of crow has been eaten , as well as popcorn, over the years. |

| I think that TheDungeonDelver has given the most intelligent (and most ignored) response so far: Quote:
Now assuming that Hyperion, ACube ... DID get permission from Amiga Inc. then I wish they'd flat out say so.
Not doing so at the outset is...troubling. |
On a separate note, I had a really evil thought: I never understood why an embedded board (like Sam) would contain an FPGA - it's expensive, and surely not very useful for most embedded systems? Well, Hyperion is already allowed to distribute OS4 for Classic systems right? What's the definition of a Classic system? A computer with the ECS or AGA chipset? Would that definition allow for an FPGA version of that chipset? Could be an interesting loophole... (Although I freely admit that this seems unlikely, from what little we know.)
Anyway, roll on the REAL announcement, that will hopefully knock our socks off _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue...

| I wish Hyperion and ACube all the best. However, to me, this announcement means nothing without an anouncement, peferrably by Amiga Inc., that ACube has been granted a license to distribute OS4 on their hardware. A partnership to distribute AOS4 for PPC and classic hardware that hasn't been produced for over 2 years and 13 years respectively doesn't mean anything to me.
Any wishful thinking about what this announcement may or may not mean regarding the only thing that really matters - the license - is just pure speculation, something I've read way too much of for past few years to get exited about now.
7 days and counting... Last edited by elatour on 26-Mar-2007 at 12:43 AM.

| There are at least three terms which have lost any meaning in the Amiga universe: 1. "announcement" 2. "strategic partnership" 3. "shortly"
I don't expect anything except more announcements. |

I'm not so sure. I would think that 166, 200, and 233MHz 603s, 600MHz G3s - A1SEs, XEs, and uA1s, and 800 and 933 MHz G4s - XEs - could be considered a 'range'
In any case, this is still good news for all those people who still have their Blizz/CS PPCs.
Edit - Oh, yeah, I forgot the new 1.0 and 1.2GHZ CPUs from some company called ACube Systems Srl. Last edited by syrtran on 26-Mar-2007 at 03:06 AM. Last edited by syrtran on 26-Mar-2007 at 03:02 AM.

But the machines you mention fall into the AmigaOne or Classic catagories. The announcment definitely states that OS4 will be available for a range of PPC hardware including the AmigaOnes and Classics.
It just so happens that ACube are about to release a new PPC motherboard, so I really think this might be some good news at last. At least I'm going to treat it that way until I'm proven otherwise. _________________

Well if I would have to nitpick, and I'm not saying that you are, what I would read from this: Quote:
a range of PPC hardware platforms including AmigaOne (MicroA1, SE/XE) and Classic Amiga. |
would be that this range of PPC hardware platforms include A1s and classics so in my understanding this could mean any other PPC hardware platform. We'll just have to wait and see.
Great news, btw. I wish all the best to Hyperion and ACube.

Yes! Other hardware...like...um...washing machines! And printers! And those toilet-looking macs that everybody threw out when they figured out they weren't expandable!

I can't believe it either. I mean It is quite simple, really. Shouldn't Amiga Inc be in some way in on this?
If they are on terms with Hyperion and ACube wouldn't Amiga Inc been mentioned in the pressrelese?
Why can't we get ANY information about the licence, is it obtained will it pose a problem ? Why must it be the biggest secret?
@those whining about niticking If you want to label me a nitpicker for these questions which really are the first that springs to mind when you read it, then go and on be happy, at least you know how to read a news item. Maybe I can learn ? _________________ AmigaOS or MorphOS on x86 would sell orders of magnitude more than the current, hardware-intensive solutions. And they'd go faster.-- D.Haynie

How many will support Hyperion if AI claims the OS is illegal? |
At this point in time I think you have to take into account that many of us have already bought and paid for a legal version of Amiga OS 4 and find that it is very "amigalike", works just fine (if you can find hardware for it) and no amount of "statements" can take away the fact that many people here love it!
Of course the really interesting part for any amigan now is will there be a future for this version of the OS or any variant thereof.
The points above may very well be dependent on if it is "legal" or not but the fact that Hyperion is willing to continue to work with their investment, and judging by what has been done to date, a good bet is that Hyperion WILL, for a time at least, continue to promote OS4.
As for Amiga Inc. well if they remove their stamp of approval from OS4 they still have a lot to prove before anyone jumps on to that bandwagon. If you're not allowed OS4 now how many will wait for OS5 in some dimly shrouded distant future?
What most want right now is "any" hardware that will reliably run OS4. I don't think many will worry if it's official or not. _________________ Fixed A1G4XE 7455 RX933PC with fried CPU Sapphire Radeon 9100 128mb ESI Juli@ 24bit 192kHz Envy24HT Sil 680 Ultra Ata 133 E-ide SeaGate Barracuda 120gb 8mb cache

| In my opinion Hyperion realized, that AmigaOS 4 is not a business opportunity any more. They just decided to throw the problem away, by passing it to some startup company. It is now interesting what ACube can do with this hot potato. Last edited by Krashan on 26-Mar-2007 at 07:04 AM.

| By taking over the sales of OS4 (and presumably its updates), ACube will be closer to the magic US$500k pa that is needed to get a licence for their hardware. That gives at least one reason for the latest move. _________________ cheers tony

AFAIK Hyperion has always used another company to distribute their products. Titan Computer and Haage & Partner were responsible for distribution of their games in the past. |
