Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (140651 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

You had mishunderstood me, or I gave the wrong impression... the 'it takes two to dance Tango' refers to the fact that's it's just not up to Hyperion that such idea would go forward, there's would the other part of MOS/AROS Team actually wanting it...

[quote]I don't mean giving up, but kind of sublicensing it... I don't mean giving it away, but setting a common ground on what Amiga should be perceived

Of course it takes two to dance Tango...[/uote]

Speaking personally, I'm crushed with disappointment... Hyperion Entertainment, HOW COULD YOU? Don't you know that the sole reason why some of us paid any attention to the Amiga scene over the last couple of years was to get our daily dose of "When will we get OS4 final?"

Farewell spiteful little trolls, you'll be sorely missed. Goodbye flame-wars, we barely knew all of you. So long annoying complaints from petulant gripers unable to accept the fact that the journey from dreams to reality takes time, effort, more time and more and more effort.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'm off to cry on the keyboard of my A1 as I install the fresh download of OS4 Update#1 and remember fondly the pleasures of days gone by.

P.S - Smilies for the humour impaired should be inserted as needed and many many beers for the developers should also be inserted as needed. To Rogue and the rest of the gang at Hyperion, you all have very naughty livers that need to be punished with alcohol... Drink up!

Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

Thanks Hyperion for this great Christmas surprise!

I'm curious now to try out the overlay function, I want to check how that Matrix Revolutions HD trailer will be replayed ^^ The floppy support is welcome, too. The "Allows limited exchange with Classic Amigas" is referred to 720k FAT floppies, isn't it? What about virtual memory, too (as mentioned by Shinkuro)?

Also, is now OS4 100% PPC native (apart for Printers:File)?

Hey Friedens, I still remember your answer to the question "What will you do once OS4 will be released?" posted a while ago. Now you can go out and get drunk as planned

I'm sure it's been said before (probably about 145 times) but I'll say it again.

Thanks Hyperion!

Congratulations!

Well, now when OS4.0 final is here, maybe it's time to get down other imporant stuff, like for instance bringing the OS to some kind of hardware (any kind!) so that people can actually use it?

Well, I'm now looking forward to further announcements about available OS4 hardware in early 2007 (was it?)...

IIRC the remaining 68k parts besides Printers:File are IconEdit,
resource.library (used by software build with ReActor IIRC),
three math libs which are only used by 68k software anyway,
RexxMast and the ARexx libraries,
and bullet.library (which is for the obsolete CompuGraphic font format).

Well, you probably never get the list down to zero 68k parts, but it seems to
be harder to find 68k parts which can be ported to PPC after each update :)

Quote:

"Final Update" means that the next update released for OS 4 will be OS 4.01.

So, pardon me for not being overly cheerful, what's "different" now? I mean, why's everyone posting dancing bananas if this is just another update? Just curious: what's the logic behind the version change? Why is this one the final update and not the previous one?

Quote:

FWIW, OS 4 was released in May 2004, and has been updated ever since. This is the final update. Everything from now on will go into 4.01 (the first patch).

By reading the other comments in this thread it seems I'm not the only one being under the impression that AmigaOS was never "officially" released. In fact, but I could be mistaken, I remember the word "prerelease" being attached to the previous updates.

Merry Christmas everyone, and thanks to all the developers!
I think I may have to change my Avatar at some point, since Al-Zahawi cannot keep saying There's no OS4 when clearly there is....
On the other hand that never stopped him before, he never let the truth get in the way of a good statement!

@falemagn

And why before a lot of trolls said "os4 is vaporware" or "it will be never relased" ecc.... NOW IT IS RELEASED as OS4 Final. Naturally development continues (it is a good thing), but we reached the state of what OS4 should be. A nice start for evolve our system in coming months.

Are you trying to say that we should not be happy?

@ Ikir

Please, how about you avoid shouting, screaming and transforming this thread into a yet another flamewar?

All I meant is what I've written, no need to read between the lines.

@falemagn

??? You asked what is the difference, imho it is easy to see. I'm not trying to start a flame war, and i'm not trying to read something between the lines of your post.
