Thank you, Hyperion for your continued effort. I plan to pony up whatever the cost may just as soon as it is available. Here's an idea...skip updates 4.11 - 4.9 and put OS5 out next!

@ jtubbs

OS5 (AKA AA2) is currently hiding behind smoke, mirrors and more vapour than a sauna set to "broil" - And is therefore not expected to be seen anywhere else other than the side of a milk carton.

Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

When I look at 4.1 screenshots, I get the impression that:

- it's unprofessionnal; looks like an hobbit system

- it's ugly and is unreadable: a lot of rules of readability are simply not respected. So this isn't only a problem of taste...

Let's have a quick analyze of this screenshot... http://www.hyperion-entertainment.biz:8080/images/osfour_shots/shot1.jpg

- There are at least four different fonts used in this screenshot. You shouldn't use so many different fonts. Not to mention the font, together with the amiDock background makes things totally impossible to read at the bottom of the screenshot. These are simple readability rules. Simply removing the labels and adding help bubbles instead could be an idea

- This screenshot looks like the GUI was stuck in the past: too many things found in 4-colour 2.x/3.x gui are still found here:
. a lot of simply designed icons (the "bring file requester icon", guess even umisef could have designed it using DPaint 3...)
. a lot of icons are still using 2:1 aspect ratio (as found in old, old, old 640x200 resolution): multiple choice "arrow" icon, etc...

- Anti-aliasing looks blurry everywhere: on the red fonts, scrollbar arrows, etc.. and it not only makes things harder to read (frame titles for example), but also so unprofessionnal...

- The scrollbar of the listview is too close from the listview text. This makes listview elements harder to read. Adding extra space (as if listview elements were longer) would make things easier to read.

- Talking about space, in this very same window: a lot of extra space is present at the bottom of the window (just above the "save", "use", "cancel" buttons): and is a total waste of space

- Amiga GUIs (be it MUI, reaction,...) tend to add way too much frame borders. Same thing can be noticed here. A lot of frames could be removed. It would not only waste less space, but provide better readability

- Window close buttons are tiny when compared with the rest of the GUI elements (same for depth gadget,..)

- Local prefs window is unreadable because of transparency but I guess it's there to show the new 3D blending possibilities of the system, so let's not talk about it (transparency *can* be usefull: so a better example could have been displayed though...)

- etc..

Please note that this little "analyze" is there to improve things... So feel free to ignore it, but do not see it as useless flameware, cause it's not.

I'll try to work out a mockup from this screenshot to show how things could be improved by using what I described above.

Umiself was talking about the ability to write a skin,.. but more than that, you also must have the tools to do that. We know OSX, Win(XP+) are fully skinnable. But I don't think evert single element of OS4.1 is (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). I'm not sure you can use *any user-defined* shape for buttons, arrows, scrollbars,...

And a problem common to all Amiga-GUI systems (be it MUI, Reaction,...) is that there is a theme for the Windows (this is the intuition skin) and usually a *different* theme for the GUI elements (reaction, MUI). This means that when using a different skin for intuition, you must work out your GUI prefs so that it doesn't loose coherency with the new intuition skin.

I agree that the optics are not perfect and can be improved still (i.e. be made more professional), but be careful not to judge the appearance by a jpeg-compressed screenshot alone... Also check if you were maybe looking at a picture which was auto-scaled to fit into your browser window (happened with my Firefox here and made things considerably blurrier...)

after reading Leo's post, i guess another hobby os have just bite the dust...

anyway remember that screenshot is taken from a desktop of a programmer. everyone know that a programmer care more about the his code than how a desktopskin look, while he is in a hurry posting news about his lates codings anyway.... at this stage of amiga os's life its more important to get code working than a fanatic mac designer goes wacky over a desktopskin...

dont worry about the desktopskin people its the least of your worries...

keep up the good work hyperion, looking forward to your updates of aos4 in the future also...

@Leo

The OS4.1 theme has not been finalised at this time. Relax

@Leo

Keep in mind that, before its release, Hyperion showed pictures of OS4prerelease1 GUI elements that did not look like the default OS4 look we know of today. What has been shown may not be the default look of OS4.1, but a screen to show off many of the font and GUI configuration options available (although, I agree such an overuse of fonts is ugly. Keep to two fonts.)

@Leo

So do you want to volunteer to fix up the look?

I think that you are making too many assumptions about the theme system. You really have no idea what the capabilities are of the OS 4.1 them system. Since Reaction is the default GUI, the intuition/Reaction theme really are one and the same. AFAIK, there is no overlap between them. MUI will use the system's window theme, but its own theme for the GUI elements inside the window. Yes, I know that's a pain. I wish that the MUI preferences system would be integrated in such a way that it will match the rest of the GUI theme. I'd settle for a theme tool that sets both the Reaction and MUI themes to match each other though.

Hans

Localprefs is transparent because it's an inactive window, an inactive window does not need to be readable in every of its gui (sub)component, does it ?

EDIT:
Oh BTW great news that OS 4.1 is near :) Thank you OS4.1 Team !!

At first it looks a bit depressing but then it gave me a feeling of times when I first got my A500 (not because of the WB 1.3 colours) and began to explore stuff... I wouldn't mind if they kept it at all, I like it. I like it a lot more than the 4.0 background wich is ok to look at for a while but gets boring pretty soon.

Also, does the XP default background look nice because of the bright colours? I hate it! It's just horrible! I didn't like the XP look the first time I saw it and I just hate it now.

Vista looks kind of nice though I'd like to add.

Whining children!

You think this is the Microsoft Windows Vista premier at the Consumer Electronics show?

We get a fantastic product from Hyperion, even while they are under duress from Amiga Inc., without adequate financial compensation, and thwarted in attempts to have available hardware.

Then you complain like someone took something away from you.

The derogatory comments are the only ugly and unprofessional visual in this thread.

Sure sounds that way, doesn't it?

I appreciate all the hard work which has gone into 4.1 and I will set it up to suit my own tastes.
