Sometime ago I did some concept drawings for what would be AROS1.3, but sadly AROS isn't as advanced as either OS4 or MOS skin wise so I lost interest. Inspired on those I've done and drew some rough ones using these given OS4 widgets...

Since all that there is to comment about are the screen shots, that's where the focus is, no matter how unimportant such things may be. For myself, I have a few comments about the UI as well.

Fitts's Law indicates that the ease of the user's ability to move a hand, or a mouse pointer, to a given target is a function of both the distance to the target and the size of the target.

This is the whole point of reserving the entire top of the screen as the menu bar, as it makes each main menu item (Project, Edit, View, Settings, ...) effectively infinite in size, since even if you move the mouse enough that it would otherwise overshoot, the edge of the screen restrains the pointer's actual movement such that the pointer remains in the hot zone for that menu item.

When you have such a large title bar, you then have the opportunity to make the title bar gadgets large as well, making them easier to hit with the mouse. This is especially true of the Window Close gadget. Since it is all by itself on that side of the title bar, it is unlikely to be invoked by accident -- which is good, deliberate UI design. So it doesn't have to be small to prevent accidental hits. Go ahead and make it the whole height of the title bar. Do the same with the sizing and layering gadgets on the other side, too.

@Rogue

I think the round edges looks okey.
But I think the gadgets have been placed a few fixels too much into the middle
of the frame. It doesn't look symmetric to the corners. I looks plain wrong to the
eyes.

Is this a technical problem? I mean when you set the GUI to use rounded corners
that it moves the gadgets away a bit because the gadgets are truly square?
If you know what I mean?

@Mason

Could you please change this little aspect? I think most complaints will end if
this is fixed.

@ pixie

Looks nice, i like it, a little bit like the old 1.3 style. Maybe you could make some day a theme for OS4?

@ Rogue and Mason

Firstly I want to say that I really LOVE the OS 4.0 GUI look...

Anyway, if you are determined to change the default look, I think the round edges looks fairly good but I agree on suggestions given with respect to the fact that the gadgets should be placed a few fixels nearer to the window edge and, if the title bar will stay so tall, they should become a little bigger.

And, obviously, I strongly hope that more and more people can join the OS4 family very soon, with ports, for a start, to SAM, mac mini (at least) and so on...

PS - Again, I want to show my support for this GREAT update... thanks for the tough work on AmigaOS to all the OS4 Dev Team !

Hey dear developers/people who could be offended by GUI discussion. Please calm down and don't take it so bad....after all, the majority of people here don't have anything else to do but discussing the GUI......they dont have any hardware to run the damn thing

Also, somebody should make more AmigaOnes with a faster CPU. It's the only hardware licensed for OS4.

Others have tried to get licensed for OS4 ports. Amiga Inc. gave out a contact method for exactly this purpose, and then completely ignored it. At least I and a few others we've heard about never did get the "questionairre" McEwen said he sent out to inquirers. Believe me, I'd like to. Pity PA Semi fell apart, as that was a fantastic chip that I don't believe would be available to us now, and nothing else seems to compare well to it.

Is my Radeon 9200 SE either of those families?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radeon#ATI_Radeon_Processor_Generations
says that 9250 is from teh R200 family.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_Graphics_Processing_Units#Comparison_table
breaks things down in more detail and calls 9250 (and SE) an RV280

Well, as it happens Freescale has announced (for shipment some time next year) a new series of "QorIQ communications processors". Looks like PA Semi scared them some.

Link to main product page: QorIQ Communications Platforms

P1 platform series (single/dual core): P1 product summary
P2 platform series (single/dual core):P2 product summary
P4 platform series (eight core): P4 product summary

They all support PCI express, USB 2, Gig ethernet, DDR2/3 memory. Missing is video, audio, SATA. Unfortunately no Altivec support.

More than likely Freescale will price these too high and shoot themselves in the foot. Again.

I think anyone who is not fussed with the new look has a very valid point and should vote with their feet so to speak.
Sell your A1's for a minimal amount in protest.
Say £20 for P&P?

Anyone wanting to get rid, please PM and I will be glad to "recycle" their machines.

Okay, Okay, I'm sorry.
It was worth a try.

Well done to Hyperion and all involved.

I am not saying the GUI design is the ultimate, I am just saying that there is obviously always room for personal taste. Anyway, I didn't make it, so it is no use in complaining to me. I am quite sure Mason will read what is said, and if he thinks they're right, he might make some changes. However, "it looks crap" isn't exactly constructive.

No it wouldn't be fair to call it "crap", simply because it is not crap. Still, you don't have to be a graphic designer to see that the grey background wallpaper is too drab and boring - an impression you shouldn't be getting when seeing OS4.1 for the first time!

In these forums, the words "eye candy" have frequently been used in a pejorative sense - a good example of the fact that some people still fail to appreciate how important it is today to introduce a product with spot-on looks.

@Trixie

I agree. That grey default is so ugly and boring, like a rainy grey boring autumn day. I've always hated that grey since OS2.

I use a very soft lightish blueish background, more like the heaven but not as clear blue.

A much lighter grey would work as well I think, perhaps leaning towards biege.

One question: Will OS4.1 finally have Glow [or DropShadows] on opened windows? According to 4.1 snapshots - it should be possible?
