Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (140662 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

Comments about "legal shenanigans" are somewhat unexpected from somebody who released an illegal product and was forced to pull it off the market, mr. Meyer.

However, you can rest assured that Hyperion has the legal situation fully covered through its lawyers.

I would like to remind you once again that Hans-Joerg Frieden is an independent contractor for Hyperion and as such does not speak for the company or its management other than on technical issues.

Whilst unqualified to do so, you remain ofcourse free to speculate as much as you want.

The rest of us will enjoy the fact that Amiga OS 4.0 - The Final Update (which is the version that will be used as a master for the CD production) has now been made available.

Yeah, but think of the marketing potential with THAT name, or of how tiny all the fonts would need to be to put it on a CD cover

Go relax and enjoy the holidays, I'm sure there will be OS4 final threads to err, 'enjoy' after a nice well deserved break Merry Xmas to you and yours!

The drama still continues.. I wonder how well it could be adapted to film, and who would make up the cast?

Uh, Ben --- I did *not* release *any* product, any more than Hans-Joerg or Thomas did. The people *YOU* agreed to collaborate with on OS4 released a product which later turned out to be improperly licensed, at which point I did my bloody best to have them stop distributing it.

But never let facts stand in the way of a good story and a tasty bit of character assassination, eh, Ben?

So, Ben --- what date was OS4.0 completed on? It's a simple question, you should be able to answer it.

I am sure your lawyers have a very definite idea of the answer, but it sure looks as if the other guy's lawyers have a very different idea. Or are you willing to come out and say that all is fine, that Hyperion and AI are in full and complete agreement regarding "the legal situation" (your term, not mine)?

BTW, just in case I forget it when you actually release OS4: Congratulations! Through five years of missed deadlines, broken promises, expensive hardware, buggy chipsets and propaganda, Hyperion and Eyetech have achieved "the end of all serious commercial development for Amiga OS". I am quite impressed.

Stop al that F'in bickering. It makes me sick..

Shouldnt we all just rejoyce in that fact that AOS is finally done. And hopefully in a few months there will be new HW.

So many have complained so long about so much, mostly that AOS was not released yet.
Who, now at this point, cares about past dates, it is, in the past..

I for one, am very happy that AOS is now finally done.

So a very happy X-mas to all of you and especially to Hyperion, who has done such a great job, even though the community have done nothing more than complain, so it would seem.

Yehaa.. its done :) great news.... :

Baiting removed - wegster

Consider this first warning. Further pointless comments will be deleted from the news item at once.

Well done, everyone involved!

Baiting removed - wegster

@all- speculation's part of Amigaland, and AW, but please start a thread instead of polluting the news item. For one, it can go on longer (news items don't bump to top), IF people are interested, and secondly, let's give people that are actually happy to see _some_ forward progress a chance to enjoy it for a change, shall we?

No, Amiga Inc. handles licenses not hyperion.

Are you looking to get a banning? Cos that sure looks inflammatory language (=trolling) in your picture. However, I will leave any clicking of the Report button to those with thinner skins...

@Hyperion

Cool! Thanks for the final OS4 update!

Does OS4 support EDID now (OS4 never worked with my LCD monitor) What's going on with U-boot? Can we expect an updated version that fixes the PCI resource setup bug?

A question for you Mr. Meyer,

why do you want to know what is going on 'behind the scenes' ?

Are you an AmigaONE user ? Are you geniounly concerned with AmigaOS4 or are you asking this for different reasons ?

The quote from you below

"BTW, just in case I forget it when you actually release OS4: Congratulations! Through five years of missed deadlines, broken promises, expensive hardware, buggy chipsets and propaganda, Hyperion and Eyetech have achieved "the end of all serious commercial development for Amiga OS". I am quite impressed."

Makes it clear you must either be an AmigaONE user, who 'experienced' all these problems yourselves, or you have a friend with an AmigaONE who is in pain and agony now...

Bit strange as ALL AmigaONE users i encountered were quite happy chums..

@thread

While speculation and guessing what's going on has become second nature, and not unwarranted by any means, please keep it out of the news item, and go start a forum thread if you'd like to discuss the 'validity' of 'when is final 'final'', contracts, and other issues outside of the fact existing users now have a new update, by whatever name. (And no, such a new thread will not be locked..just removing the OT and baiting from the news item itself, give people a chance to enjoy seeing _something_ for a change, please..)

Just google the phrase "the end of all serious commercial development for Amiga OS", and you will see why I have a somewhat cynical attitude towards Hyperion's efforts of the last half decade....

I notice that the Download section has
"NOTE

The folder "Split Version" contains a split-down version of this file. It has been chopped into several pieces for easier download, especially if you are on a modem line."

Does this mean that 4.0 will be split up for us sad sacks still on Dial up or is just something left over from Update 4?

We called it Final update, because it is exactly that - the final update to OS 4.0. Everything else will be 4.01 and beyond, and eventually 4.1.

Yes, it is simple to understand.

@Acill_MOS

doubt this will happen, the thing you ask for is not possible i think. you must remember we got two competing companies here. that have a few different ideas and direction... if you have chosen your path and cant afford to buy another system to run aos4.0, then you should just enjoy what you got....

Oh I have no problem with what OS4 hardware costs, but I do have a problem with its quality and the price for that level of quality. The fact is zero hardware is out that will support it unless you buy something used and that is not something I am willing to do when much faster and more modern stuff is out now.

Sure the Pegasos II is no longer manufactured but several places sell it new, and lots of Efika boards are now out as well. Its the clear choice. Its a shame that peoples big heads get in the way and they would just rather nothing be available, rather then use good solid built hardware from Genesi just because they are Genesi. I think Eyetech has done much worse to all of you then they have now.

Anyway congratulations again, take a look at my new announcement at www.acill.com

Congratulations Hyperion. Job well done! Now, all the Amiga community needs is new hardware on which to run OS4.
