Software News   Software News : MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for Phase5 PPC boards available
posted by tokai on 24-Aug-2005 20:52:33 (20175 reads)
24th August, 2005 - The MorphOS development team would like to celebrate the five year anniversary of the first ever publically available MorphOS release by announcing the immediate availability of MorphOS 1.4.5 Free Edition for PowerUP accelerators by phase5 & DCE.

Update: MorphOS 3D Update pack now available. "This pack brings Warp3D and OpenGL(R) API compatibility to a whole new range of hardware including 3dfx Voodoo and ATI Radeon."

By releasing the latest end user version of MorphOS for PowerPC-equipped Commodore A1200, A3000 and A4000 computers, the OS is brought back to its origins. Prior to creating versions for the bPlan PEGASOS and various embedded hardware platforms, development started out on the forementioned computers by Commodore Business Machines and resulted in a first beta version to be released in August 2000.

For information about supported hardware configurations, installation instructions and the actual download location, please visit

http://powerup.morphos-team.net

Please note that the MorphOS Development Team is unable to provide direct end user support for this specific version of MorphOS. If you encounter any problems, please use the PowerUP forum on MorphZone to ask for help and support.

http://www.morphzone.org/modules/newbb_plus/viewforum.php?forum=42

We sincerely hope you enjoy the Free Edition of MorphOS 1.4.5 and would like to welcome you soon as regulars on a MorphOS community website.

Thank you for your interest,
The MorphOS Development Team

What about my Picasso IV? Now all I need is a PPC card.
Nice bit of thunder-stealing from OS4 it seems.

@ironfist and @thread
Evidently that thread was moved to trash, and previously was locked. Keep the trolling and snipes down (pretty good in the news item so far, but let's not get started). You don't have to like MOS, but sometimes there [b]is[/s] something to be said for-
"If you can't say anything nice....." You DO know the rest right?

Obviously technical corrections and such are always valid, but keep it impersonal please.

Announced originally for release in 2003 for both PPC enabled classic Amiga and Macintosh hardware, this is certainly a case where I would say: "Better late than never"

It's working very nicely, if you have a properly working PPC card. The speed is quite nice, esp. for 040 users it will be amazing. It's not a Pegasos though, but certainly makes the machine _A LOT_ more useful. The speed increase is even bigger on a CSPPC.

Here are a few of my experiences:
- no floppy support (not even _WITH_ running a Kickstart, original trackdisk.device seems to do something nasty)
- no audio support if running without Kickstart(?)
- if you've an X-Surf, try to use MNI driver with Miami, SANA-II driver doesn't work
- Toccata didn't worked for me (again, toccata.library does stg nasty about interrupts, maybe i'm wrong though)
- only graphics cards specified in the compatibility list work, CGFX V4 drivers won't work
- there is no overlay (if i remember correctly) and no 3D for CVPPC/BV
- take a care about resetlevel in startup-sequence! my CSPPC needs resetlevel=5, probably your card also will need different one than the default value 1.
- read the readme.

If you use systemfriendly software though, it works very nicely. I'm running ANR, IBrowse, AmIRC, Simplemail, and a few other MorphOS software (Free Pascal for eg. ) on it, and it's just fine.

Running software which does direct hardware banging is still a bad idea. But since it's possible to have a dual-booting AmigaOS-MorphOS system, it's doesn't hurts so much. And 99% of software coming out these days is system friendly anyway, so it shouldn't matter.

Well I've yet to get it going... Ive got it to load and reboot but continue loading I get "startup failed returncode 10"

I might have another go tomorrow, but im prety satisfied with OS4 on my BPPC, and I can use AGA with it and a lot more hardware too

The boot/startup file is reported as not an executable file?!

It is an elf file that needs to be executed with another program?

I don't know if it would work with this version, but I have a Mediator HAL for MorphOS. I don't have to hand though, it's on my A1200 about 20 miles from here.

Too bad I sold my BPPC/BVision and Grex last year.
MOS looked nice when I gave it a short try on AmiGBG.

Be fair --- OS4 was announce for February/March 2002, in November (or was it still October) 2001.

@ quenthal

It'll be at least 2-3 days before I can test it and pass the file on if it works. I think I got it from Cato Hagen so it might be worth asking him if you can. He sent it me via the Mediator mailing list so it might be worth asking there.
