Wow...I must say, I switched to Mac earlier this year, and my MacBook is my favorite machine I've ever used, but...this is REALLY awesome news!! Seriously, if suddenly my debt clears away and I find myself with a few extra hundred bucks, I'm so on this...glad to know we have some OS4.x hardware again!

@OldFart
>>What's in the price?.....In short: x86, allthough cheap due to economies of scale, is a continuous flow of money down the drain, whilst an Amiga has shown to be an investment that retains its value over time. Now, which is cheaper in the long run? Pray, tell!

Sorry I don't follow your thinking.

Your son has been able to enjoy some great games, while you haven't. You can't run ANY of those above mentioned games on an Amiga One and the fact that the value of your Amiga One hasn't diminished is because there haven't been any new Amigas for years (until today). So now that SAM is out watch the price of your Amiga One go down the drain.

Also your son has bought several machines that were fit for the purpose (running those games).

I once, like you, was going on about Amiga and its greatness, one of my colleagues said: "Can you run WOW on it? No? Then I am not interested!" until we get some software that brings the masses back then your son will continue to buy those expensive graphics cards.

PS: Great news about today!

I compare the SAM440ep to PCs because they are the only systems left to compare them to. Even Apple has left PPC hardware and moved on.

OWB does CSS.....so what?! It doesn't support Java and won't in the foreseeable future so it's pretty useless for any web browsing. And let's not forget that there's no office software out there for OS4.1 so OS4.1 will remain a hobby OS to be laughed at until some real applications are developed for it.

Last time I checked, I didn't need Java to do any web browsing. Aweb, Voyager3 and IB2.x all served me well enough with their complete lack for Java support.

If you are referring to JavaScript - well that is a different kettle of fish, and again all the current browsers support this to differing levels - but generally well enough to browse most places without problem. Flash support is missing, but then flash is mostly used for annoying advertising, so good riddance

Also, there is zero point in comparing hardware aimed at OS4.x to everyday PC hardware (even ignoring the whole PPC / x96 architectural differences). Hardware typically only is as fast as it is because the OS that a majority of people run on it is a known resource hog.

Also, why would anyone want to port an application such as Firefox or Open Office if there are practically no users to take advantage of it. You can't have your cake and eat it. If you aren't going to support the hardware solution and OS, then developers aren't going to support you.

Historically if you look back at the Amiga, a lot of its great applications were not coded by corporations, but by people in their bedrooms and released for free or nominal "shareware" amounts - and a lot of them were pretty damn good, and this was only possible because they bought the hardware in the first place - despite it's lack of these tools in the first instance.

Just to warn you all, that if you're humming and harring about whether to get one or not, consider this...

Court Case.
If the SAM hasn't got Amiga inc's blessing (I doubt this), and Hyperion lose the court case, the plug may be pulled on the SAM and we may have to wait a loooong time while we wait for Amiga inc to introduce new hardware (if they ever do, after all, OS5 is out there already remember?).

Of course, if Hyperion win or it has Amiga inc's blessing, we have nothing to worry about. But personally, I wouldn't gamble on it.

I don't have any insider info on this, if I did, I probably wouldn't be able to post my thoughts on this.

EDIT: What i'm trying to say is don't miss out like those who wish they'd brought an A1 all those years ago, get it while you can.

Regards

Mikey C

@NutsAboutAmiga

Nah, just pointing out that the person I was replying to has been warned about things and advised to take his comments to a separate thread - which I wouldn't have read until after making my posts

What bothers me more are the specs. There has been a lot of discussion about the graphics memory requirements for OS 4.1. The Sam has only 64MB. It's not going to be any better than a µA1 in that regard. I'd like to be able to run multiple max resolution 32bit screens but 64MB might not be enough mem.

Trust me, it is much better than the uA1 in this regard. 64MB instead of 32MB makes a big difference. For example, on a uA1, when loading 6-8 Megapixel images in WarpView, it becomes dog slow because it runs out of videomem. On a Sam it remains nice and smooth. But if 64MB is not enough for you, you can buy a PCI Radeon 9250 with 128MB real cheap and be happy

Generally,

This is a GREAT NEWS. Off course small volumes of Amiga hardware, even at its best times of A1200/4000 were expensive, and today PPC hardware generally is. So I will not further comment the SAM and OS4.x prices - as they are set. I could just ask for extended "Summer follies" now when it is time.

I will probably buy SAM next year as well as OS 4.1 (my budget did not expect this) and then slowely built an computer around it.

I am glad OS 4.1 for SAM is out now (just a week since I asked WHEN!)
as SAM has made its point. Now, again we have OS 4.1 and Linux platform.

Until then I would love to see now is:
- Some of nice software made for OS 4.1 at least promised Dopus Magellan, Page Stream, Papyrous Office ...
- Some nice software ported (had a thread about what would do the thing)
- VERY IMPORTANT: Having YDL and/or other strong Linux for SAM EP

Hadware
- Some more OS4 drivers for PCI cards, USB Printers
- Some SAM expansions on Latex port
- Some pro G4 or better SAM board with better gfx as hi-price option
as well as price down for current SAM

Thanks Hyperion and Acube.

For the negative persons about price and web browsers i can say you dont buy a HW to run windows. You buy it for OS4. Is there any other HW to buy ? How many amigas was there to buy after A1/uA1 stopped selling ? So many years have passed so i think its worth the money. Is it faster then your classic machine like A1200/A4000 ? Just that is worth upgrading. Ok UAE on a pc machine is fast but hey it cant run os4 :)

As i have A1G4XE SAM440 is not interesting for me. I would buy only when theres a faster/better machine than mine. But for classic users that wants to upgrade and have waited for alot of years and complained for no HW, now is the time :D

Im very happy for this news. Finally. I hope Acube sell many machines and do more high end too later.

I would like to see os4 community grow :)

Thats the reality that we are in - not some elite OS with cutting edge software! £367 is wAAay too high for JUST a motherboard and memory - to then have to add £100 for the OS!

You're forgetting the on-board Mobility Radeon M9, which is unfortunately a very expensive chip and probably accounts for about 1/3rd of the total price of the Sam440 board. The Flex board will have no on-board M9, so its price should be considerably less, and you can use a cheap PCI graphics card (such as a PCI Radeon 9250) so the overall cost of a system can become significantly less, certainly low enough to be affordable for people who want to run OS4, but obviously not as low as some budget PC produced in millions of quantities. Those who are happy with other OS'es should not bother obviously, I don't even understand what they are doing on sites like this? Why can't they just leave people with a different taste/different needs/preferences, to enjoy some great news?
