I don't even try those. I'm on bad terms with the A-shape and anything elated anyway. *shudders*

Key of G rules anyway

I seriously need the action set up, it's high enough to play with a slide...

Getting OT here I guess

@The Daddy

I think 512MB. Believe me, it is enough for now since OS4 is small and now with virtual memory (you need to create a swap partition).

So, it's a swap partition? NIce! I hate the way windows uses a file in the normal directory tree.. and when it tries to expand it.. phew!

I'm so glad someone else saw the value in a dedicated partition to be used for swap!

@ikir, please go make some noise about your system in related Q3 thread.

IMHO Q3 is not buggy - after all it's a widely tested cross-platform game and OS4 parts play only a minor part. I am ready to bet that the problems are somewhere else, maybe MiniGL, maybe Warp3D, maybe some other SW component or even HW.

My point is that in order to find the real reason, there must be a systematic approach like a database of known-to-work / known-not-to-work configurations. But let's move discussion elsewhere, shall we?

I'm baffled by the reactions displayed by some in this thread.
I can't see how people can expect a new PPC hardware produced in the
hundreds to be cheaper than a bog-standard PC, produced in the millions.
It's called economics of scale - we don't have that in the present Amiga world.
At least not yet .

It won't do what do you need? It's too expensive? Well, the answers are clear.
Don't buy it, and stop complaining. It won't get any cheaper any time soon.

That IS good news but the price of a SAM440ep motherboard is $691 US at current exchange rates. That doesn't include the price of OS4.1, case, power supply, hard drive, mouse, keyboard, or CD/DVD drive. At that price I can easily get a COMPLETE x86 system WITH a decent LCD monitor.

Unless Acube and Hyperion can come up with some kind of discount/bundle then OS4 on the SAM will remain out of reach of most Amiga enthusiasts.

your dead right...on top of that, to most people, this is going to be a 2nd system...ill be waiting for a price drop...

Poster: ChrisH Date: 18-Sep-2008 1:50:59 @ferrels Why is £367 (459 euros, $679) "just too high" for an (OS4) motherboard with memory? Let's compare apples-to-apples: First, I'll add (guess) £250 to make that mobo a full system with monitor, including (say) £50 mark-up for a small retailer who's going to build your computer for you. So total cost would be maybe £617. By comparison, a cheap-ish PC capable of running Windows Vista fairly well (2GB ram, etc) would cost maybe £436, including the same mark-up. Now yes, that's still a £181 difference, but to me it doesn't look nearly so bad when you consider that is the privilege of getting hardware capable of running OS4 well. Especially considering x86 has massive scales of economy, that ACube simply does not. If you're going to complain on price, then you're never going to buy a non-x86 system. It's not like Amiga was ever cheap, even in Commodore's time!

your apples to apples is not really apples to apples...

a machine that runs vista fairly well, is going to make mince meat out of sam/OS4. its a silly comparison.

IMO apples to apples is comparing it to a Pentium 3 that runs XP or linux ok,
which I could probably find for free in a dumpster somewhere in the CBD...

amiga wasnt cheap, but we got cutting edge tech at a reasonable price.

this is ancient HW, with a somewhat dated OS that does not even have all the software ready to meet my basic needs, let alone my professional ones. your asking me to pay a lot for an incomplete dated computer thats not even in a case. I cannot even reliably browse the web with.

price does need to drop somewhat

that said, it is great news!

I dont think people are saying it needs to be AS cheap as x86, just not as expensive
if many people "just dont buy it" how is that beneficial?

On the contrary:
The current prices are too cheap.

Here's why,

Look at the insurance industry = AIG
a) They sell for less - to beat the competition.
b) They add more features - - to beat the competition.

End result, make no money, and you go belly up. That == NOTHING LEFT AT ALL

@Deniil715

I have several Amigas. I have two Amiga 2000s and an Amiga 1200. I also have a PegII. And it's a bit laughable to ask me or anyone else if they have an OS4 capable machine with the current state of "Amiga affairs". I doubt there are more than a thousand people world wide who have machines capable of running OS4 or actually intend to run OS4. I'd actually buy a copy of OS4.1 if it would run on my PegII. I got my PegII over 2 years ago. It came with 1GB of RAM, a 1Ghz G4 processor, a 9250 video card, a CD-burner/DVD-ROM and a 60GB hard drive. I paid just over $700 for it at the time and it even included MorphOS 1.4.5. So I believe that once the euphoria wears off over the new Amiga hardware, sticker shock will set in for some.

I'm happy that there's finally new hardware to run OS4, but I think the price is too high even for most Amiga hobbyists/enthusiasts. If you have $1000+ to put together a new OS4.1 capable machine, then I'm happy for you. Most of the world doesn't. I hope that sales volume do create a situation that drives prices down. I'd love to buy a SAM with OS4.1 if the price was somewhere around $450 or less. Sadly that probably won't happen with so few Amigans left.

And I was referring to Javascript in my earlier post.....my bad. Until there's a port of javascript for the Amiga, OS4 and MOS will both be greatly hindered in the web world. Same can be said for Flash.

Sounds like a garage sale could help you gather enough money.

Also a 100+ hours of over time can get you very close to being able to afford one.

If you can't get over time at your current job, get a second job.

@ferrels

Javascript support in IBrowse 2.4, OWB, and Sputnik (the web browser for MorphOS) is all quite good and you should not have problems with the majority of sites, especially with OWB and Sputnik.

As another poster pointed out, you don't really NEED flash for most sites, nor Java.

@ferrels

As HammerD pointed out, even IBrowse has Javascript support, and it is fairly decent. OWB's Javascript support is the same as pretty much every other webkit based browser (e.g., Safari), so that's not a problem. Flash is still missing though. I'm hoping that someone will have a go at porting Gnash and turning it into a library so that browser plugins can be made.

Hans

Unfortunately according to ACube site SAM 533MHz are just sold out...

It still remains on sale an uncertain number of SAM 667MHz motherboards equipped with 512MB RAM and priced at 465 euro due to Summer Follies sale bargain offer...

vista isnt good enuf, but calling "sam/AOS4.1 VS dual/quad core cpu vista machine" an apples to apples comparison is just ridiculous...

if linux had the HW and software support I need, I wouldnt have a reason for vista...until then ill just have to live with vista. dont say mac...

Although I can use my brother´s PC (Core 2 Quad, 2400 MHz), I would like to buy something different. Yes Core 2 is better than 440EP, yes NVidia 8600GT is better than Radeon 9000 and yes 2 GB of RAM is more than 512 MB. I use this good PC mainly for internet and WinUAE (and Oblivion...). SAM440EP can satisfy all my needs and it runs the most powerful incarnation of an OS that I admire since my childhood.

Maybe I am mad, maybe I am stupid, but my dream computer is amiga not common PC.
