@Xenic

To me it sounds like it's a EHCI USB 2.0 chip that has fallback support for OHCI USB 1.1.

As Hans-Joarg suggests, we don't always buy stuff with productivity in mind. Not many people buy a TV in order to accomplish something, but there's a zillion of them out there. Not many people are productive with their Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo. People buy 'em anyway. Golf clubs, baseball bats, matchbox cars, firisbees. I bought a sports car a while back, but I already own a more fuel-efficient base-model Honda Civic. What should I have purchased instead of the new car I now enjoy?

I think this is great news for Amiga fans. Not only that OS4 is on SAM that some have already purchased, but it also signals that the previous hurdles to providing "Amiga" hardware may have been overcome, and we may see additional things happening as well. No, I don' tknow anything, no, I am not hinting about anything, I just see this as an optimistic sign. And I'm happy to see it.

Congratulations Hyperion and Acube for getting new hardware for
OS4 into the wild. There are possibly many surprises that will arise
from this beginning step.

As for the speculation, recrimination, buyer remorse, lost opportunities,
real world concerns and phantom trolling - everyone has to remember
that the Amiga has just been given another start on fresh, available
hardware.

The past is the past, learn from those lessons. The future is what is
made of it.

Several years ago now I was given a heads up about problems in
waiting for the Micro A1 "I" model that was to follow the Micro A1 "C".
I immediately ordered the MicroA1C for $1100 Canadian which gave
me a mini-itx MB with 256M of RAM and a copy of OS4.0.

That's the best money I have spent in the last decade.

Not only was I able to carry on with a workalike system that ran all
of my apps in emulation at speeds that exceeded 060 performance
but I was able to run new PPC native apps being written for it.

The SAM whilst seeming underpowered has the advantage of much
faster RAM over a much faster bus as well as more modern higher
capacity chips and controllers. All of the SAM works and it has
faster and bigger graphics capacity.

I can't justify the price when I have an A1 XE and a MicroA1 but for all
of those people who missed out on these "recent" machines and have
a store of favourite apps or a penchant for the Amiga "experience",
this is the time to jump back in. As a hobby it is a one time expense,
combine a birthday and Christmas present. I know when A3KT's went
on firesale @$800 my credit card almost melted in the quickness of
drawing it from my wallet.

Having said that, a "flex" might replace my Micro in the end.

I've often been accused, of not knowing what a pc can do, in places
like comp.sys.amiga.advocacy. It's one of those ad hominem, red
herring type tactics that doesn't stand up to closer examination as
I currently run two "toy" quad core systems - by "toy" I mean all
onboard MB's, with maxxed out RAM @4G and a cheap Q6600 cpu.
One is a clean WinXP system hosting only open or free software and
the other is a 64bit Ubuntu distro.

I understand my PPC Amiga can't achieve the same heavy lifting
capability as these boxes but as most Amigans already know, the
Amiga is clearly more fun to be operating. I use a 2.1MP digital
camera which produces 400K files @1600x1200 HQ which my
machine throws around as well as a quad can throw around 5MP
or 10MP images. On the net however, even 2.1MP is overkill, so far.

So, to all of you who have been waiting, jump on in, the water is fine.
A thousand sales would do wonders for apps that are on hold atm due
to uncertainties. 2500 sales by Xmas would guarantee some cheaper
options. With ports and new software to go with the hardware we
could be poised to have 10,000 users within another year. Maybe then
somebody would be ready with higher end hardware.

There is tremendous interest out there, not the kind that forks out
big dollars like a grand for an underpowered hobby box, but bring
that price down and port "Chrome" and see what happens.

People, don't get me wrong. I'm happy at this news too. I'd be even happier if it wasn't so darned expensive. I also hope there are no legal issues to prevent this from happening. It seems that the Amiga has been plagued for years by legal issues so I'm not holding my breath.

@Hyperion and ACube

This is fenomenal news.

I hope that this is a positive sign of things to come.
I can see some very interesting niche uses if this goes well.

edit: 'thing' became 'this'.

Regarding gfx mem:

1920x1200x32 = 73728000 bits = 9216000 bytes = 8,79 MB

Multiple screen handling should be and (according to devs I've talked to) is no problem.

WOW! I suddenly realized I am HAPPY!

IIUC, the potential for problems occurs when you start using compositing to deal with layers.

Then you need one 9MB area to hold the final result to actually display, one 9MB area to hold the background image. Plus memory for each and every window on that screen --- and if one of them covers the whole screen (as is commonly the case), there goes another 9MB.
Then you probably need to double-buffer the whole thing, because otherwise (compositing directly into the displayed area) you end up with ugly flicker, so there is another 9MB.

Which means that a 1920x1200x32 screen with an image background and a single full screen window, would use more than 32MB of video memory to display. Keeping two such screens in video memory at the same time would already require some trickery (the two buffers of the double-buffered compositing area can be reused :), but start throwing in some extra windows, and things can get tight; You also start to have to deal with gfx memory fragmentation, especially if some app locks down its screen or pixmap by requesting a pointer to it....

And of course all that is before anyone even starts thinking about using actual 3D stuff, which needs all sorts of data structures in gfx memory.

There is a reason gfx cards come with hundreds of MBs of memory these days...

Hi mate,

that's the best thing you've said and probably how you should have worded it in the first place - the reasons for the expensiveness of it all are obvious and have been covered - the days of a £299/£399 all-in Amiga are gone, a tremendous irony I know that PCs should be less expensive than Amigas now.

This HW/SW announcement is good news, let's not spoil that, there's a lot of people who have waited a long time for this hence the reason you are receiving such hostility to your comments.

As one of the mods pointed out, if you have reservations, start a thread my friend

Rude!

I would call £400 "affordable" and £600 "not affordable" - you see I have "different taste/different needs/preferences" just like you! I can also accept I may need a different OS and applications for different jobs or different hobbies (making music, editing videos, playing games etc).

Like I said, if someone doesn't want AmigaOS 4, they have so many options, many of which are even cheaper than the MacMini you mentioned. If they want OS4, and they can't afford the 667MHz version, they can get the 533Mhz one much cheaper now for only 332 EUR + VAT. So those who have been waiting for a chance to finally get an OS4 system, can do it now, and we have now hardware available that is more affordable than any of the AmigaOne systems before.

Surely it is on par with Blizzard/Cyberstorm systems, in fact it will easily outperform any classic PPC systems, but how sensible is it to compare newly developed hardware with ones released 9-10 years ago?

I have a couple of questions:

- how 440@667MHz compares to GX 750 @800MHz?
- is the M9 64/128 bit?
- do PCI riser cards work?
- ...and, can it triple-boot OS4, AROS and Linux easily ;)

What you basically said was that OS4 was useless, we shouldn't bother with it however cheap it was, and that we'd all be better of with Windows/Mac/etc.

Which is fine, if you don't like AmigaOS

The two issues do not go together. I like AmigaOS very much, but Amiga has always been about buying a complete 'package' which was better than the alternatives. When I bought an A1-XE that was what I hoped would develop, but IMHO that package, and current products don't offer an acceptable balance of design, performance and price. For reasons which have been well discussed, that balance is probably just no longer attainable.

My Mac mini does provide a complete package at a reasonable price, and my next computer will be selected for the same reasons. That doesn't mean I don't like AmigaOS, but the hardware is just as important.

@amigakit

Why are there 2 version (usa / europe and Australasia)? What will the differences be?

@thread

If you can't afford to buy the Sam440 right away, it might be a good idea to grab a copy of OS4.1 anyway, while it's available. You can get a Sam board later, if worst comes to worst, and OS4.1 for Sam is pulled.

@Hyperion
Why do you insist on running your site on port 8080? I can't access it from work due to our proxy blocking non-standard port Also do you have any performance data / screenshots you could share with us? (Yes.. always with the screenshots.. I'm just keen to see it... )

(Last edit?) How good is 68k emulation on the Sam440 running OS4.1?
