We are saying it again now because the situation changed now.
Many people evaluated the CURENT (new) situation, and came to the conclusion that the hardware is not up to the current technology or it is not worth that money.
It does not mean we dould not buy it if Acube does improve the processor and / or graphic chip and memory. Any of those elements are pretty cheap, available and possible for a company (even as small as them).
Quote:
If you think you can do better, write an email to Hyperion with a business plan and hardware specs and we can talk. |
I don´t have enough money. I just can express my thinking to help companies know what users want.
Anyway, I will try to make some kind of proposition based on more interesting hardware, like the Pandora.. ¿Will you be open to it? |

I read that the SAM440 has a SATA-II controller. Does OS4.1 support the NCQ mode of SATA-II? |

@Kicko - Santa can afford anything.
I think somebody was being honest. That they may not buy it at all. Regardless.
Once again: IMHO - Too Cheap!
Also those seeking x86 - Can you please pick up on AROS forums and lend a hand?
Or is you won't lend a hand cause we can't afford to pay you?
Or is you won't lend a hand cause we can't afford to train you?
Or is you won't lend a hand cause your tired, from repeating the same thing year after year.
Even better, is it because you need a SAM440ep with AOS 4.1 to be able to program code in an IDE, without getting a blue screen of death.
IMHO what makes anyone think they can be successful in a saturated x86 market when millions has been spent, and were still not happy with the outcome. It's not cause we can't afford it, it's causes it un-attainable. Last edited by meet.mrnrg on 19-Sep-2008 at 09:19 PM. Last edited by meet.mrnrg on 19-Sep-2008 at 09:16 PM. | i will get one sam and amiga os 4.1 for it for sure within 2 months, awesome news, been looking daily on amigaworld for ages to find out any good news for the future and this sure is a real good step forward,
and regarding specs and price, heck if i support this now and also will get myself an nice toy to use and playwith, i atleast do something to help the userbase and progress of amiga 4.x+ os, and eventually things like more hardware and new software will come to life even office appliances should be able to come in a while, i sure can see that some developments could have been much more widespread if it hadn't been so limited hardware wise for the past years (so darn hard to find amigaone hardware!)
atleast i have had my amiga 1200 and amiga 4000 to play with the past years.
anyways i couldnt belive my eyes when i saw this news at first thought it was a bogus prank joke post for a couple of seconds ... |

| This news is the best I've heard on these forums ever! If I had one of those jobs that gave a decent annual bonus, I'd happily blow it on a Sam440ep with OS4.1 (wife permitting ). However, i've bought a A4000T fairly recently and my job doesn't give bonuses full stop, so it's no new gadgets for a while. Although, I've just got a natty little Iomega eGo hard drive for my Apple iBook G4!
I'll join you Sam owners when i get a better job (hopefully soon, the credit crunch hasn't been kind to my industry ). Last edited by BigD on 19-Sep-2008 at 10:11 PM.

| *Ahem*, I've been reading all the comments as they come in and I think some real gems have been dropped in the pile with all the trash talk. That Keyboard case is ace. Will a SAM MB fit in that? Sign me up if it can, I will part with my trusty micro to have a walk around piece of kit like that.
With the level of emulation supplied by OS4 I still use all of my productivity apps that I have used for decades. Apps don't stop being useful if they are old or no longer updated.
With two toy quad cores on my desk along with my micro I now have three equally responsive machines, with the always implied "non heavy lifting" limitation on my 800MHz 750FX. All are air cooled and quiet. Only the Amiga has an LCD display (@$50 for a used 17" looks like new).
"Toy" in this case means that I did not buy a premium MB able to support raid, 32G of RAM, a high end GFX card, 4 x 500G + a 1T storage backup with a fast system drive with a well ventilated and super quiet case to run several $1500+ app packages. Ubuntu 64bit and all those freebies and XP with only free and open source software is used.
No one is predicting when a high end Amiga will show up. But Ack pointed the way on Amiga Inc's behalf for the court case posturing. Personally I'd love a PS3 port and the blue ray player over a mac-mini for about the same price. Too bad the RAM is so limited.
Since this is an Amigacentric forum, try and stay positive and hopeful. |

| Wow! Haven't logged in for a while and just saw this. Great news indeed -- way to go Hyperion and ACube! Now all the upcoming Amiga shows have suddenly become much more interesting. Perhaps the vendor lists will grow a bit larger... I would really like to get to AmiWest this year but, alas, work prevails, sigh...
Congrats to everyone getting a new system. I need a laptop (and a car) right now so a new Amiga is quite a ways out on the horizon for me. Enjoy!
Kind Regards, Kay |

I have a well supported knee and a strong firm paddle if you are volunteering. unfortunately for far to long we haven't had much else to do! and many of us just cant help but point the finger in a certain direction... That finger should be pointed in the direction of Snoqualmie, Washington, not towards Hyperion nor ACube. Quote: if the vast majority of us are running aos4.1 and sam, I think we'd see a distinct change of attitude around here... don't you ;) That is probably true. There is a lot of frustration which I am hearing in these threads over no hardware for so long a time. Users want to get OS4. I remember when I bought my A500 oh so long ago now. I wanted an A2000, but could not afford it. It was not until after the A4000 came out that the prices of the A2000s came down enough for me to afford one. The one I got was the old 4.3 motherboard. There again I wanted at least a 6.2 motherboard, but was happy with what I got. Later I was able to afford two more A2000s with both of them being the 6.2 motherboard. What I am trying to say is that I did not log onto any web site and bitch over the prices of hardware. I sucked it up and bought what I could afford. The problem was my earning power at that time. I always bought older used Amigas and maxed them out as best I could. I was never able to afford a new Amiga until I paid off my house. Shortly after my house was paid the AmigaOne came out. I ordered one right away and I did not go to the forums and bitch about the price. |
when I was talking about pointing fingers, i thought it was clear I was talking about Ainc...
there is no 2nd hand sam market, and A1's at the time were not light years behind in specs...so the situation is a little different now.
for the people on a budget, the high price of sam has increased their frustration. I can understand this may be the best price they can achieve at this point in time... but we users also want them to know we want the price to drop and we want them to work towards this...thats fair isnt it? _________________ In a world of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.

| a great news. for amiga land, i still wish that ACK will skip ther low end and then atleast role out the power system...
but whot the hell. acube will make a high-end board sooner or later. i think that the high price on sam is that,os 4.1 was not realesed to it before, pepole didnt fly out and buy it. så i cant imagine that there have been produced in a geart number,
i hope the flex/red one will take go off pretty well. sam is a nice board iff you have in mind that it is a replacement for amiga one micro.
i hope that there will soon make a new version of it- and yes a high end board as well.
something that will kick ass. pa.semi was maby too good to be true.. |

You don't have to allow it to expand. You can set a partition manually to be used and a fixed size for it to always be. This both allows you to specify where it is, and stops it fragmenting your drive. |
I've tried that. Since it bitches if you remove all traces of the pagefile from the boot drive, if you leave it there, windows will STILL try to re-size it, since the 'swap' partition is already full.
Can you believe that I've had programs which are looking for swap space of 300MB, complain that I didn't have enough, when I had a pagefile of 2048MB? And when I shrunk it to 1024MB the same? (This was a windows 2000 MCP training CD, running on a WInXP SP2 box with 2048MB partition and probably ~2020MB pagefile)

The beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
I recently bought Eee 900, a brand new laptop with Celeron M 900 mhz. By your standard, it is underpowered as well But, it is current technology, and does do what I bought it for. There is more powerful alternatives in the same price range as Eee, but those all weights 2-4 kilos, the Eee only 1 kilo.
So my question is, what is your definition of "current technology" ? And bear in mind that the Eee (which is current technology) has sold over one million worldwide, so a computer does not need to have 20 core cpu to be successful and useful, not even on the x86 side.
People with both MicroA1 and Sam440 has mentioned that the Sam440 does do a lot of tasks in OS 4.x faster than the MicroA1, so the Sam440 is not necessarily a downgrade from the AmigaOne-series, especially when it is a lot cheaper.Last edited by tomazkid on 20-Sep-2008 at 01:23 PM.

| Jesus on the pogo stick, guys! After I read this thread I did face-to-desk combo.
Honestly, I'm the one who should trolling OS4 and Sam, but I see you guys are doing fine on your own.
Kidding aside, Rogue's example with guitar is a fine one and should end this "I could buy this for that cash!" (funny, I got bass guitar for same reasons as Rogue).
"But, but, but! For that price I can go and buy something that makes me productive!" -- superb, go! I have Linux laptop, Mac laptop, AMD64 with Windows on the desk -- productivity. I'm not sure but I bet all of them where cheaper than Sam.
But then, I also have Efika and Nokia 800. I could buy a Asus EEE instead of Nokia 800, because N800 is just a toy. And I love it, it's fun. Not a minute with it is productive, unless watching anime, reading RSS, Last.fm or ScummVM is.
Not everything in live is about price to quantity ratio. I paid $150 for front seat on Miller, Clake, Wooten concert. I could go with 'random rock concert for $5' and have 'more bang from buck'. Where's the fun?

Be happy! The ratio is about 1:10 here. In the reality, it's less than 1:100.
A great future to Sam and 0S4.1.

| For those complaining about the high price: Go build your own board and sell it cheaper. The market will be yours! Now it's your great chance!
For those complaining about the HW is not the current technology: Frankly, what did you expect? This is about community, nostalgia and hobby. This is not about big companies, cheap and productive machines anymore (unfortunately).

I don't have a swap file on my boot partition at all (nor do I have any traces of it). I have one single 4GB swap file on its own partition, and that is all. All other partitions are set to "No paging file".
What you must remember is if you only have the one set on your "C:" partition, you cannot remove it until you add another one, and then reboot your machine. Also, make sure you manually set the initial and max size to the same value - so in my case both read "4096". This means a file of 4096MB is created and will never get bigger or smaller.
I also have the environment variables for TMP and TEMP assigned to the same "Swap" partition rather than the default "%system%\Documents and Settings\%localuser%\Temp" _________________ Test sig (new)

Sounds to me as if he's cautiously hopeful that SAM will cause more people to develop for OS 4, which may drive more [real and reasonable] demand for faster hardware, which can be met by ACube (or other producers) with some expectation other than bankruptcy.
"We need to start from something." Yeah!

I wish I could say that I was pre-ordering SAM+4.1 tomorrow (and developing office productivity software, architectural CAD, and decision support systems for air traffic control, beer purchase selection, and romantic partner management...). I'm still haplessly trying to get my as yet half-built PC to see networks, so that's where my brain is now and my, uh, "allowance" too. I don't want to risk having my kidneys harvested by my wife, or being tied up and slowly bitten to death by my two-year old daughter (with the willing connivance of her big sister). So I'm a gutless hypocrite right now. Maybe in a couple of months. |
