Awesome news.

I can buy an Amiga again! Never thought I'd say that in this lifetime.

Fantastic news and very couragous of Hyperion to do this ahead of the final verdict. I will be specing out my new Amiga this evening. Why do these things always happen when I am on holiday?

Great stuff!

This is great news from Hyperion and Acube - about time we have some alternative hardware for OS 4.

Hope SAM and OS 4.1 is not shown exclusively at Pianeta Amiga and that UK Amigans can see a working SAM and OS 4.1 at the MAG Bash to be held in Coventry on 1st November 2008.

@all

don't forget this: Sam440 Flex at colmar multimedia show 2008 with Relec.

ACube Systems at the Colmar Multimedia 2008 show

ACube Systems will participate to the second IT meeting in the North-East of France. This show will attract 10000+ visitors! We'll bring our products with us and show them on the same booth as Relec.

We'll bring with us the Sam 440ep board and its Sam 440 Flex sister. The Minimig will come with us too in its Crystal case, and we'll show AmigaOS 4.1 to all ex and current Amigans.

Take you train ticket now to reach Colmar on 24-25-26 October and join the party.

@doc

Now that case is something portable :) Not a laptop but still something you can bring with you without hassle of desktops, keyboard etc. Remind me to buy one if my a1 gets burned ;)

EDIT: Do you have a picture on the back so i can see the ports. Or a link to the case. Is there space for a pci card ?

PowerPC motherboards are no more or less proprietary than x86 ones, they're just nowhere near as common.

Where's PowerPC version of AMD's Yamato reference platform?

Refer to http://www.viaopenbook.com/
The X86 way for providing reference motherboard designs to ODM/OEMs (i.e. cut-n-paste engineering).

Whether there is a PowerPC equivalent of The Yamato ref. platform or not has no bearing on whether something is proprietary or not. As I recall, the Amigaone is based on the Teron reference design. The Efika has become a reference design (sold by Freescale IIRC). AMCC (the company that makes the PowerPC 440 chip used on the SAM board) sells developer boards, etc.

No he is not banned in any way. His last log in was yesterday where he made some posts in other threads.

Show me proof that the DOOM 3 source is due soon, as a quote from John Carmack's news item about this, or Ryan for that matter.

last time i checked it was due in end of 2009 or mid 2010.

Perhaps he is referring to the Xbox port that ran on a 733Mhz Celeron with 64MB of total system memory....

Those that advocate porting to x86 haven't got a clue as to the resources required to do that. Rogue stated elsewhere (can't remember exactly) that it's out of the question for now because it's just too big a task for the current resources available.

Time and money dictate the scope of any project. It's obvious that the Sam440 coupled with OS4.1 is the best that could be done with limited resources. For now. But is that offering a step along a roadmap or an end in itself?

Some people have been waiting over a decade for a viable platform, amidst legal uncertainty and a pattern of pratfalls. Asking if the system is sanctioned and what they can expect next is wise. If x86 support isn't on the radar than people can make an informed decision.

As for the propriety of the hardware, it may be based on a reference platform but unless I can access that specification and manufacture something that will run the OS it's closed.

@d0c

At first glance it looks the thing, a bit retroish, A1200-style. When taking a closer look at the pics ome aspect about the form factor that stands out is the height of the case.
Ergonomically speaking a keyboard should be as flat as can be. This is surely not the case with the cybernetman. That case is RSI-inducing as the hands are angled upwards at the wrist. Sure you can add a raiser for your wrists to lean on during typing, but the truth is that such contraptions are generally discarded short time after purchase.

A thing to keep in mind.

But it really looks the thing, allthough one could definately skip a few of the connectors and fan holes at the rear!

up until the 90's there was the two and usage when they used a keyboard, today people type as fast with one hand as people used two hands back in the days, the other hand is now used to control the mouse... welcome to the 2008 typing method..

PPC440@667Mhz + ATI M9 with 64MB VRAM should be play XBOX Doom3 port (if the source code is available).
