First, I'll add (guess) £250 to make that mobo a full system with monitor, including (say) £50 mark-up for a small retailer who's going to build your computer for you. So total cost would be maybe £617. By comparison, a cheap-ish PC capable of running Windows Vista fairly well (2GB ram, etc) would cost maybe £436, including the same mark-up. |
£617! Meanwhile in the real world you can get a QUAD-CORE Dell with 1TB (dual 500GB) drive and 3GB RAM, 22" DVI-D 1680x1050 monitor, case, keyboard, mouse, VAT and delivery included for £629... Including Vista Home Premium if you really want to have that too.
Thats the reality that we are in - not some elite OS with cutting edge software! £367 is wAAay too high for JUST a motherboard and memory - to then have to add £100 for the OS!
Excuse me whilst I sneeze. Aaa-choo-pple! |

| I purchased my first Amiga (A1000) in 1986 for $1,295.00. This did not include the monitor. When you factor in inflation, the SAM board doesn't look so bad, even after you add OS4.1, a case, power supply and other parts needed to create a complete machine.
For the price conscious, the best option was the Amithlon solution which you could install on cheap x86 machines. This is my main Amiga for the present, since there were no other options. Too bad, Amithlon was taken off the market. It works really nicely.
Compared to Windows computers, the SAM/OS4.1 computer may be expensive. But historically, compared to other Amigas (A3000, A4000), it is a bargain. _________________ A1000 - 2 Floppy, 2 MB RAM, OS1.0-1.3 A500 - 60 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS1.3 A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS2.04 A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS3.9 A1200 - 4 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV, OS3.1 Amithlon - 20 GB HD, 512 MB RAM, PIII-1000

| Great work guys.
I'll pass this one though. The specs and price ratio isn't close enough to interest me, Let's hope for a killer Version 2. _________________ AmigaOS or MorphOS on x86 would sell orders of magnitude more than the current, hardware-intensive solutions. And they'd go faster.-- D.Haynie

| Windows is brittle like glass, you sneeze and it breaks every day.
There is no price tag on the compensation required to make up for lost time.
I won't be buying any more replacement GLASS, if you get what I'm saying for the foreseeable future.
As far as Linux goes, it's efficient but not as good as an Amiga OS
Cheaper prices for Amiga will be around the corner, as soon as we can get the System Lords to agree on the Amiga Compatible Trade Mark & Copyright deals. + SPECs _________________ Quote:

| I wonder why all people are complaining today about the *high* price of the Samantha and OS 4.1... They are the same as yesterday
And about the combo Sam/OS4.1 compared to the x86/Vista one... no comment

It is not a bargain...
Elder Amigas offered the power of a Mainstream graphic & multimedia computer at a reasonable price...
Now you pay an expensive price not to have special graphic and audio, but you pay for being free to use a standard system but also equipped with AmigaOS that is really one of the most usable operating systems ever written and it is easy to use, and it REALLY obeys the orders of the user ... _________________ "When the Amiga came out, everyone [at Apple] was scared as hell." | Great news ! Thanks Hyperion and ACube !
Sam440 seems to be a nice board. New hardware is what we were waiting for months or years. Take the opportunity when it comes !
AmigaOS is updated and modernized each year. If there are more users, developers will enjoy even more to bring software.
The major lack was web browsing but now it is solved with OWB (thanks again Joerg !).
We have all the nedeed to enjoy ! |

Isn't it possible to use fastmem as videomem? (or is it too slow?) I never heard of any problems with low gfxmem on os 3.x or MorphOS. |
IIRC MorphOS 2.0 also recommends a 120 MB graphics card (or was it 64?). On 4.0 and earlier AmigaOS/MorphOS systems, you could not run out of video ram because only the active screen was in video ram. With the 4.1 layers compositing, more than just the screen has to be on the board. You can have these bitmaps in system memory and swap them out (which is done) but it will result in slowdowns.
This has nothing to do with Picasso96. _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail
