I recommend that people send ridiculous amounts of money to my account. Never happens either.

There is this thing called "hobby". I recently (well last Christmas actually) bought myself a guitar. I am still learning to play it, and do not claim to be good at it. I will never be good enough to go to a gig and play in front of an audience. I don't intent to. Incidentally, it cost as much as a copy of AmigaOS 4.1.

So, it was basically money wasted. I don't get work done with it. I won't make money with it (especially if you hear me sing). So... what use is it?

Fun. I just love playing (enough that I bought myself an electrical too). It's a hobby. It's a useless hobby, of course, and I bet I could have gone and bought myself something cheaper (like "Guitar Hero" for the XBox 360), but I wanted a real one. I could have also bought myself a few more songs from ITunes, those guys can play better than me anyway, and it would have been much cheaper.

Now, the moral of the story, if you have a hobby you do not give a damn about whether it makes sense or not.

(And for the record, I still hate barre chords, although they don't leave so many imprints on my index finger anymore)

Edit: It's 'moral' not 'morale' :-$

OS4 would sell very well with mobo like Efika 99¤.

Rogue: I understand your point, I do. There is no price for hoppy, but amiga needs new users, developers, etc and 250-300¤ complete system would do that. That would be possible with 99¤ mobo

Many ex-amigans would be interested, but not that price.

I'll buy SAM

I will buy SAM bundled with OS4.1

I've missed OS4.0 since my A1 was damaged from lightning and unfixable in 2004

Money is no object here... its AMIGA we are talking about
I would much rather pay overprice for some AMIGA HW than half the price for some shiny new pc #### that runs vista............ugh

To everyone involved -

I'm quite content with my A1 but I'm glad to see more compatible hardware.

And to everyone expressing negative comments, if you think it's too expensive then don't buy it.

@ferrels

Just why are you here.

If you want a cheap and nasty PC fine, just cut out the crap and stop bothering those of us who are pleased at the news.

The last few days when my A1 looked as if it was dying I would have payed £1000 for a replacement system rather than use a PC or a Mac (other than for emergencies).

I nearly considered buying a SAM as soon as I heard of it but now I have fixed my A1 so don't need to. And I am more than happy that those that want to are now able to do so.

You don't want one and that is your choice but why not just leave and shut up and leave the rest of us in peace !

That's great news, but i would prefer Efika port more. Not only to have both os4 and mos on single mashine, but because of price!

99$ efika + silent SSD + OS4 (or mos/aros, nevermind) would be great and affordable.

People saying that it's expensive do have a point. It is completely true that you can buy a dual-core PC for less. I can also understand people who don't have the spare cash might be unhappy with the situation. However, given the small volume of sales that are expected, the prices are, IMHO, reasonable. No-one is ripping people off and making ridiculous profits.

Whatever the price, the OS4.1's availability on new hardware means that it is finally possible to increase the number of users/developers. I hope that there are plenty of developers with the time, money and interest to buy a SAM440 board + Amiga OS 4.1 and start developing. With enough developers, we could expand the available software significantly, and hopefully create a small but sustainable niche market for Amiga OS 4.x.

Really, it's all about what's fun. I enjoy developing software for Amiga OS 4.x, even though it's unlikely that I'll earn anything from it.

Hans

I use a PC at work and hate the things.

I want a HOME computer not one of the dull things I *have* to endure when at work. None of the software ever works on it and it is so slow considering the GHZ CPUs they have.

Work is BORING it pays the bills but that is all that is going for it - I prefer life myself.

Last thing I want is something to use for real "work".

As for Office stuff I still use Wordworth daily and much prefer it to that dreadul Word or the equivalent Linux options.

@non A1 owners

I am so pleased that everyone will now be able to buy hardware to run OS4.x after`waiting so patiently since A1s ceased production.

I am also pleased that now I (perhaps) don't have to worry too much about my A1 motherboard suffering some terminal event.

Congratulation Hyperion and aCube. Well done to all

I would just like to see Bill McEwen travel the world to grab the SAMs from peoples grasps. If he does lets hope he also takes the £35 eavh he owes us all while he is at it.

My, my.....a little testy aren't we? You must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Your argumentative skills need a lot of work. "Shut up" is what my 4 year old uses. I expected more from an adult.

You obviously didn't read my first post where I said this was good news but that I had reservations because of the cost.

Personnally, I put some hopes in a Natami + PPC + AOS4.x. But the Natami is not yet available; not even built (the dev boards are just going to be delivered).

In the meantime, I think I'll buy the SAM440 + OS4. I've been waiting too long already to replace my (brave but aging) A4000.

Edit: I wrote "brave" because it is still alife, running 24/24, 7/7 for the last 5 years.

This... is... fantastic... news! Very well done Hyperion and all the others involved! If only i had the $$$ to get one right now i would.

OSNews has already put an article in their page. Now i'm keeping an eye on Slashdot and other pages about this.

OEM Version of AmigaOS 4.1 for Sam440ep Imminent (OSNews)

P.S.: to those that are going to the Pianeta Amiga, don't forget to make some videos showing OS4.1 on Sam440ep.

The Efika is cheaper than the Sam, but I don't think that a board with a 400MHz 603e-class CPU and 128MB RAM without even the possibility of memory expansion could be considered today as any kind of alternative desktop system. A 667Mhz Sam440 also does not reach the specs which one would normally expect from a "low-end desktop in 2008", but it does have nearly 2 times the MIPS performance and 4 times the RAM, which is further expandable, as well as an integrated Radeon chip. So while you are right about the price, I just don't think that going any lower in the specs would be acceptable for most people, while the cost of a Sam440 setup is in my opinion low enough for most people to be able to afford one, if they want to, and once ACube sells a good number of Sam440 boards so that their development costs are covered, I would expect the prices to lower. Also as I mentioned in an other post, I expect the Flex version to allow a considerably lower cost for a working system due to the dropping of M9 in favour of using a cheaper PCI graphics card solution.
