That IS good news but the price of a SAM440ep motherboard is $691 US at current exchange rates. That doesn't include the price of OS4.1, case, power supply, hard drive, mouse, keyboard, or CD/DVD drive. At that price I can easily get a COMPLETE x86 system WITH a decent LCD monitor. |
Didn't the same thing happen with thee AmigaOne? Except last time the A1 was taking over from the Classic Amiga many times the speed. This time the Sam is taking over from the AmigaOne at almost but not quite the speed. At that price you could almost get a complete AMIGAONE system with LCD monitor!
Wonder if A1 prices will fall?

Unless Acube and Hyperion can come up with some kind of discount/bundle then OS4 on the SAM will remain out of reach of most Amiga enthusiasts. |
Sure, but it is an an option. And many people wanted it. I just wish OS4 had been licensed to that dual 2Ghz machine! |

| @ferrels Why is £367 (459 euros, $679) "just too high" for an (OS4) motherboard with memory? Let's compare apples-to-apples:
First, I'll add (guess) £250 to make that mobo a full system with monitor, including (say) £50 mark-up for a small retailer who's going to build your computer for you. So total cost would be maybe £617.
By comparison, a cheap-ish PC capable of running Windows Vista fairly well (2GB ram, etc) would cost maybe £436, including the same mark-up.
Now yes, that's still a £181 difference, but to me it doesn't look nearly so bad when you consider that is the privilege of getting hardware capable of running OS4 well. Especially considering x86 has massive scales of economy, that ACube simply does not.
If you're going to complain on price, then you're never going to buy a non-x86 system. It's not like Amiga was ever cheap, even in Commodore's time! _________________ Author of the PortablE programming language. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue...

| Yup, also people are forgetting that you can still make use of the Summer Follies promotion: http://www.sam440.com/eng/summerfollies.html -- EDIT: WTF happened to that :-S... well heres the news item: http://www.acube-systems.biz/eng/news.php?id=31
Which is still valid until 30th September... and with that the Sam is 300 Euro, which when I just converted on XE is 237.186 GBP... so add about £100 for OS4.1 (?) and its £337, admitedly you need to add other stuff but thats not really that bad, its cheaper than the A1's too. Yes you can, but we're back to the old argument of x86 again which has been done to death - seriously we've had this problem for a while with regards to high priced HW so it's nothing new.
Be grateful that there's anything at all out there and it's like anything where economies of scale are involved; the more that is sold and available, usually the more the price can drop. Not saying it will.
Horses for courses - if you want an x86 machine, buy one. If you want an OS4 capable machine, expect to pay a premium. Just the way the market is.
Kind Regards, Rude! _________________ 2017 Camaro 2SS
