Timberwolf is the project name of the AmigaOS port of the Firefox web browser (for legal reasons it cannot be called Firefox).

What are these legal reasons ? I'm curious... _________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/

Similar to the ones that make Debain call their version IceWeasel probably. _________________ BroadBlues On Blues BroadBlues On Amiga Walker Broad

| /me now remembers a post on an aw.net thread where Rogue said that he was "tempted to port Firefox himself" :)
BTW now I can also understand why OWB hasn't been updated since last June, makes sense with this ongoing port.
Good work Hans-Joerg and Thomas!

| WOW - this is great news !
I really appreciate the effort guys.
@all The only problems I have with Firefox is that some plugins use extensive javascript/RSS processing that temporarily freeze main Firefox page loading/interaction.
I heard installing fresh Firefox is recommended rather than updating.
But seriously, this is very exciting and pleasing news.
Where did the name "Timberwolf" come from ?
Someone with a wood and wolf fetish ?

Could the Amizilla bounty be switched to this one? It's a big bounty, and it was made for Firefox... so!

It's what I was thinking, AmiZilla bounty should be splitted in case of porting on one or more Amiga flavour...

| @asymetrix,
I still think JAVA may be the ambitious one to come.
Timber starts a fire and a wolf is bigger and more ambitious than a Fox.

| I'm sorry - what are these screenshots about? Are you kiddin'?
Please make some screenshots of Acid Browser test showing a good result. This is what matters. _________________ Sometimes we give people a lot of credit just because they're writing nice sentences even if it isn't adding up to much.

| @Birbo Come on, no one stated the Friedens had a fully working Firefox ready for release?
I will of course post Acid browser test screenshots when Timberwolf is ready for that. Until then you will have to do with a screenshot showing XULRunner (Firefox engine) ported. And the Firefox GUI (with some errors) native on OS4.1
That is the current state of Timberwolf and there's of course still a long way to go before a finished polished Firefox hits the Amiga. But what you see in the pics I posted is already a major achievement and a big step on the way, whether you like it or not. _________________

Well, according to the Debian policy, everything should be opened, and this include graphics,.. as Firefox is a trademark and the Logo isn't free, they decided to rename it...
I think this has nothing to do with the reason why it is renamed for AmigaOS 4... As far as I know, open source and trademark free has never been a goal for Hyperion ;) On the contrary... Everything is closed, including the hardware which comes with a dongle, but this is another story.
Any more guess about this reason ? _________________ http://www.warpdesign.fr/

Relax, these are very early days yet. However, it's a huge step in itself that it actually compiles! Plenty more work to do, yes, but there's already a fair bit of progress. And it's in the hands of two guys who are known for actually releasing quality software So I'd be confident over the next while that this project will bear some fruit. _________________ RobTheNerd.com | InstallerGen | SMBMounter | Atoms-X

| Well, Firefox and the logos are indeed trademarks, so maybe the reason is that Firefox only allow the logo/name to be used on officially endorsed ports. I doubt they'd want anyone downloading the source and releasing their own shoddy version of Firefox, tainting the name... Last edited by Daedalus on 29-Sep-2009 at 09:05 PM.

The reason? Well, to put ants in your pants for starters?
The real reason is maybe to make OS4.x a more attractive choice than MorphOS or AROS?! Is this not a given?
I would have made the same decision if I had the chance. Especially after putting in so many hours of work basically for free and being in their situation (developing OS4)..
EDIT: Btw great work Friedens! Faster hardware soon and I'm back owning OS4 Last edited by Samwel on 29-Sep-2009 at 09:14 PM.
