Announcement   Announcement : Project: TIMBERWOLF - Bounty for already in progress AmigaOS 4.1 port of Firefox
   posted by Cyborg on 29-Sep-2009 16:53:08 (62280 reads)
Project Timberwolf

Finally the port of one of the most wanted software for
AmigaOS 4.1 has been tackled! The well known AmigaOS developers
Hans-Joerg Frieden and Thomas Frieden work already since
quite some time on a fully AmigaOS native port of Mozillas'
Firefox webbrowser!

Because of the unrealistic terms and conditions of the AmiZilla
bounty, it was decided to start a new bounty only for AmigaOS 4.1
and beyond. Thus this bounty is in no way related to AmiZilla.

Timberwolf is the project name of the AmigaOS port of the Firefox web
browser (for legal reasons it cannot be called Firefox). Firefox is an
award-winning open source web browser and is the de-facto-standard
browser across a wide variety of operating system, taking second place
in popularity after Microsoft' s Internet Explorer. Its features include
tabbed browsing, support for HTML 5, ECMAScript 3.1, and CSS 3,
extensibility through addons, and a lot more. In short, Firefox is the
most complete open source browser to date.

AmiZilla FAQ will be updated in the next week or so to reflect the new reality of project TIMBERWOLF. Does that really have to be all upper case? Competition will drive the Amiga marketplace forward and is a wonderful thing. Now if we could just get the brothers to work on Open Video Toaster when Firefox is done?

@Bill P

As you know I just wanted my $40 transferred to Project Timberwolf as i told you in private. When I found you were no longer in charge of the Amizilla I was a bit shocked as I never heard about that.

Here I could see that I was not the only OS4 user that wanted my donation transferred to Timberwolf and that's the reason I asked people to get in touch (after your "funny" email).

Maybe a better idea starting a separate thread about the now ancient Amizilla bounty?

Lets try keep this thread positive and untainted

Is there a some way to split AmZilla bounty to:

a) Having TimberFox bounties per shown progress

b) Leaving 25-50% money to coders that would take
their source and make MorphOS port

c) I believe this is beyond 68k and 060 ... Even OWB chockes there!

@DiscreetFx : I want also my money back and transferred to to the TimberWolf project. Trying to make people believe that there will now be a competition beteween Amizilla and Timberwolf is fooling them !

For the past 6 years+, how much di you get from our moeny sleeping on an account which, I'm pretty sure, gave you interests (I'm note sure its the proper word).

So, now, it's time to give back the money to those who want it back. Otherwise you won't be called anymore DiscreetFx but Discredited.

Since I think there won't be anymore update for OWB, I'm waiting for TimberWolf.

@K-L

Understood, little more complicated than wam -> poof -> instant transfer though. AmiZilla funds are in an interest bearing CD. DiscreetFX does value each and every donor to the AmiZilla Project. What was the goal again? Firefox for Amiga OS and like systems. We love the fact that TimberWolf is here. Competition is a great and marvelous thing. Please please finish Timberwolf and Firefox is here for Amiga long last after so loooong! Watch AmiZilla FAQ for update soon. Interest from CD is added right back to AmiZilla fund. DiscreetFX does not benefit in anyway from AmiZilla, in fact we lose money every time someone donates since we cover the Paypal fees.

They should publish all the sources in order to do anything like that.

It runs very well under Amithlon

@DAX

Don't worry to much about the negative views of some people. Not everyone has the luxury of going to Amiga shows in person, and seeing things working with their own eyes. It's different if you only hear about things and see screenshots, and spend a lot of time waiting for stuff to be released. Plus, some people find a negative angle on everything.

You picked a good time to get back into the Amiga scene.

Hans

p.s. thanks for the donation to the RadeonHD driver project. Yes, there's a lot of work to do, but it is happening.

Even so I cannot think for a moment that the Frieden's would work on a Firefox port if they didn't think it would be useable. That is what I was hinting at.

Why to make open source to closed source ?

Give us an executable of TIMBERWOLF to show to the ex-Netscape executive when he is back in town. I'm sure he would be on board and very happy if he has a copy of TIMBERWOLF to run on his MicroA1.

Great News! (we'll assume..) The big money amount from the NS (ex-)Executive should motivate even more the brothers, and all refunds/transfers which can be made from the Amizilla project.. :)

btw, surprising that NS Executive is an amigan as well owning an micro1! didn't know.

@Trev:

Thanks for the explanation!

@Itix:

Well, i don't see Sputnik/OWB bounties the same as this, where we have now two bounties for the same program, from this point i consider fair to make the money transfer.

@arsipaani:

I think you need to read more carefully the thread ;)

@diegocr

Just to clarify we did not mean the AmiZilla Booty would be transferred to TIMBERWOLF. That would not be fair to the people that put money into it for MorphOS, AROS and Amiga virtual machine (Amiga Forever) ports

Yep, I agree, part of The AmiZilla bounty should be re-directed to TIMBERWOLF- as people have suggested, the easiest way is to just give it %25- around US$2,500. The other way mentioned, for donors to redirect their donations is another good idea, though may be hard to track them all down, and in the end may not even get to $2,500, but worth a try.

Doing anything else, ie: like re-directing the whole Bounty to OS4, is fraught with huge problems- it could be conceived as political meddling towards OS4 (redirecting funds), even if it that's not the intention! The OS wars calmed down ages ago, the last thing we want is to reignite them...

My only other suggestion- as we're changing the AmiZilla bounty anyway, we might as well split any money left into 3 bounties- for OS3, AROS and MOS. Also, all TIMBERWOLF's source code would have to be open-sourced, as that's required in the current AmiZilla bounty.

windows or mac for example introduce their memprotect API (win 95) long time ago so devs can write apps that run on future OS Versions with full memprotect.so devs can step by step change there apps.

But when you look on OS4, there is near nothing done in the past 5 years that give any hope OS4 get full mem protect.

It's not true at all, on OS4.x many API basis are new to give 3th part programmer same things you have described for win 95. Please read AllocSysObject(), AllocDOSObject(), AllocVecTagList() autodoc for example...

I actually think Thomas and Hans-Jörg are a bit foolish if they only go for the OS4 bounty and not the whole whole Amizilla bounty as well. We're talking a LOT of money to make it work across those three extra platforms here.

But can anyone tell me in a calm and indoor voice how much work it really is to make something from OS3.x that doesn't include any 68k assembly compile and run properly on AROS and MOS?

I would think there would be pretty close to zero extra work involved to ensure it worked on those extra two (making it a case of just porting to OS3.x and 4.x), but I'm not familiar enough with them myself...

Of course, the chance that anything the Friedens does would be in any way welcomed by the MOS community is probably frigging close to zero, so it might be they just don't see it as worth while. Possibly some troll would be able to dig and dig and dig to find small bugs to delay the payment of the bounty (I don't know how the Amizilla bounty is expected to be paid out, who will make the decision that this is good enough etc)...

@olegil

My understanding is that they simply are not interested in the other platforms, and want to spend any effort on the other platforms. They also want to use whichever Amiga OS 4.x features are most appropriate without worrying about whether they exist on the other platforms.

Personally, I'm glad that they're not going to drop down to the lowest common feature set for all of these OSes, and making the OS 4.x version take advantage of everything that OS 4.1 has to offer.

Hans

When I read that, I couldn't resist to make a link with MUI for morphOS and AOS3 and 4 and I could expactly take what I have quoted from you for the end of my sentence

IMHO It's more easy to do for MUI, a libs, Mplayer,open office,wookiechat, sabreMSN,.... having a common programmer for all the OS versions than for a specific browser like thunderwolf.

In another way, having another programmer(s) who would like to add the specific for morphOS, AOS3 or AROS should be accepted and welcomed IMHO

programmers on a platform should make port for all OSES untill the program not become too specific (surely the case for Thunderwolf and not for MUI IMHO)
