@Rogue

I don't really see why it would be "difficult" to add asl, font settings, palette, pointer, popup menu, wbpattern and workbench (Did I forget anyone?) as new subsystems in GUI prefs as a first step. And move screenmode, overscan, picasso96mode and screens into a single prefs app. And Printer, PrinterGfx and PrinterPS into a single printer prefs app. Sure it's work that you don't have available time for right now, but surely you can take advice of how to improve it? Step two could be to create the realtime preview thing and add texture/gradient displays. And thirdly start normalizing functions and grouping them better together.

Just because the default theme looks good enough it doesn't make having a usefriendly GUI prefs system a bad thing and it certainly doesn't have to be extremely akward to use. Surely you can see the point of having simple to use prefs guis? Both to help users and to showcase a brilliant solution to others. I can assure you that a lot of people outside the enthusiast market would absolutely puke on the current prefs system and go like "haha those crazy amigans" in its current state and simply choose to stay away from it besides making jokes about it whenever they can.

It Can be approved alot and i'm just giving you some advice on how one could push it forward. Wether you take it or not is up to you.

/Björn

Wholeheartedly agreed
And, as someone has already mentioned somewhere else, I'd do the same also with AHI + sound and input + AmigaInput.

F.ex. I'm for a totally different style and I like customizing each and every single detail, and for sure there are many people out there like me.
Personally, I'm used to the system and I'm also aware of the reasons that brought it to the current state, so I can live with it; but not everybody will.

Unfortunately, I could not agree more.

Personally, I voted to not being able to set uboot env vars from OS4 at all. Sure it is convenient but users are generally used to being able to fiddle with things and not worry so much about damaging their config that they can't boot. With the UBoot prefs utility, you can do a heck of a lot of damage very quickly and you may not notice until the next time you do a cold boot and your system won't boot up.

*cringe* enable DMA on unfixed boards, user thinks system runs BETTER, and then...filesystem corruption. Evil.

Password (encrypted, not ROT13 ) lock the env vars, and then allow env vars to be set from within the OS.

Not sure what's up- I didn't overwrite my original prefs with the new file back when I did this, but imported them instead.

I thought I imported them. Can I now boot from the CD or something to get in there to change this? Actually, it boots up - just no screen.

Did you also:
remove amigaOne.card?
let the new kicklayout overwrite your old one?

Yes, I followed the instructions completely. I have no idea how during the Update 3 most of my screen resolutions disappeared.

Trying to get the screen resolutions back caused this.

That's exactly what I got. Had to revert to the backup
of the stand before updating.

"backup of the stand"?

My update was completed successfully. It worked fine. It is just that I only had three screen resolutions left to select from. I wanted them all. This is a fine pickle I am in. No screen at all.

Hyperion? Could we have better step by step installation guide?

I don't think they knew beforehand that somehow screen resolutions would disappear.

Hmm... This is the 2nd day without any additional helpful comments about the pickle I've gotten myself into. I guess this means I will be going it alone. [sigh]

A wipeout and a complete fresh install has to be tapping me on my sholder. I suppose that is not so bad.

Still, I thought the fact of losing most of my screen resolutions by doing Update 3 would be of interest to those who try to fix these things.

Fresh install here I come. Well, perhaps after a martini or two. After all, it is Friday afternoon and my weekend is here.

@Thread

I guess no one seems to be interested in my disappeared screen resolutions, then the blank screen upon rebooting.

So, I've done a complete reinstallation of OS4 from the original CD through Update 1, 2, and 3. Now I have a lovely, beautiful screen. Everything seems to be working as advertized and all of my screen resolutions are available again.

There is a bug there somewhere, but I feel like I am talking to a blank wall.

Now back to my martini.

@Moxee

The first time that I tried to install update 3 I deleted everything in my SYS: partition (after making a backup), used the CD that came with my uA1 (prerelease, update 1), then I installed the update 3, and I noticed that I only had screen resolutions from 800x600 and below. My problem was that when I first installed update one (in intermediate mode), I answered the optimal screen resolution question as the recommended 800x600. So then I wiped my SYS: partition clean again, and this time answered that question from the prerelease CD installer as 1024x768 (the resolution that I prefer to work in); and now I have all choices from 1024x768 and below.

It may be worth your while trying this, especially if you think that you might have done what I did on my first reinstall attempt.

You were actually doing a reinstallation from the beginning. You could have just installed Update 3. Although, starting fresh like that does get rid of any nasties.

Before I installed Update 3 I had all my screen resolutions. When Update 3 completed I only had the three lower resolutions as you mention above.

Yes, you are presented that question when you completely start over again on the original OS4 Installation CD. I downloaded Update 1, 2, & 3 and installed them in order. I do not believe Update 1 asked any screen resolutions questions. Probably because they were already set. With your system you got the the Install CD and Update 1 on a single CD.

When I did Update 3 somehow it deleted all my screen resolutions higher than 800x600.

This is what I finally ended up doing. I quick formated my SYS: and started over again. I selected the highest resolution presented as I had done on my original installation. I did Update1 and 2, then held my breath when I did Update 3 again. This time Update 3 did not deleted any of my screen resolutions.

You have given the best advice and hit the nail on the head. Although it was the installation of Update 3 which somehow managed to lose my higher resolutions.

I think they should include a line in the install instructions to select the highest resolution if you want all the resolutions available to you. Maybe that is common knowledge and I am the one lacking.

I ended up in my troubled situation after I tried to import the resolutions which were deleted during the Update 3.

Upd 3 installed here too
A bit off trouble with getting the right screen modes, I could see all off them in P96mode but not in screenmode. But when i found the "getmode" or something they all apeared and i could set 1280x1024.

So, thanx OS4 ppl

I had read that a software patch for faulty USB might be possible. Has this been examined in this update?
