Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44597 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

Not at all, for a tiny system, it's fairly high end hardware which makes it rather nice as the first Commodore Amiga in twenty years. I am happy they went with a really nice quad core (i7 2600K) and left the low end dual core for the VIC-Mini.

i was referring more to the price, lack of innovation, and a corporate addiction to photoshopping publicly-available images.

that said, i would agree that it is nice that if they are going to do this to the brand, at least they're using top-shelf hardware. well, except for the GPU.

I like the case, seems it is available on ebay. What do you think how much would those engravements cost ? Would be nice to put my SAM440 mini in it.

I'm sure the original case is on EBay, but the customized case that is the official Commodore Amiga Mini is not on ebay nor does the original case come with COS-V with licensed Amiga and C64 software nor the blue ray drive that the Commodore Amiga Mini barebones comes with.

it depends. resellers like directron will do laser engraving of aluminum casing like this for $20. depending on the material and size of the design you want, it can more or less, but for this it won't cost you more than $50 with any reputable engraving firm.

Eliyahu - Thanks for the Ebay link to the same case as the Amiga Mini is using, selling for $65 - Well spotted.

The x86 hardware spec is ok for a PC running Linux or Windows 7, but seriously, why do they call this an Amiga? It just isn't.

fair enough. then again 'COS-V' is freely available -- and without the gaudy garnish -- as linux mint. and a blu-ray drive to fit the case can be had for between $50 and $60 retail. but it is fair to point that out. i didn't realize it came with the drive.

GPU is onboard with it's own RAM, there isn't much out in the mini-ITX field that has a higher end nVidia GPU. I am waiting on the details on the upcoming Commodore Amiga 1000X if will be sporting a nVidia gfx card or will have onboard nVidia GPU. I am hoping it'll be with a GT 560 or higher end.

End of the day, I'm happy to see a new Commodore Amiga being released.

ZOTAC Z67ITX-B-E Mini-ITX Motherboard? (Ebay, BIN) - $250
Intel Core i7 2600K (Ebay, BIN) - $350
16GB Corsair DDR3-1333 Ram (2x8GB 204-pin SODIMM) (Ebay, BIN)- $150
1TB SATA Drive (Ebay, BIN) - $150
Sony Slot load blu-ray drive (Ebay, BIN) - $100
(Prices found on Ebay without trying very hard to look for bargains)
Commodore Amiga 'mini' case (CUSA, Preorder) - $345

That gives ~$1350 USD (retail) for the parts.

(Joke, I'm not trying to steal your business...) If anyone wants one, PM me - I'll do one for you for $1750. That's $750 cheaper than CUSA, although it'd be Linux Mint rather than CommodoreOS installed.

Seriously though, that markup is obscene.

$3000+ price tag says hi.

just because its a high amount does not mean their getting a profit on it. Putting together off the shelf components and charging alot is a way to get profit.

Making a motherboard from scatch, and obtaining funding to have a production line is a much more viable reason to have a high price than just greed.

Just noticed your previous posting, stating that the BD is included with the barebones case.

So that's ~$1250 for parts. Retail.

I'll see my previous 'obscene' and raise me a 'repugnant'.

Sure, if it cost you $1500 to make it then yes Id pay that.

it seems you may not understand any production costs of making a small scale production batch of any type of circuitry, let alone a multi-layer pcb, using cpu which is used in mainly areas which have unlimited finance's (military) having a thorough Quality assurance procedure, which means the company will loose money if problems occur.

A-Eon is working with a high risk items while working on a shoe string, yet CUSA uses off the shelf products(low risk) and aiming to reap in the profits.

are you sure this is a new motherboard built for this "mini amiga" and not a Chinese MoBo that costs 30$ (except cpu)??
Why someone should design and produce an x86 motherboard if there are a lot of cheaper alternative all around the world??
