Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44522 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

Strange about the avatar, but as long as you're OK not having one then never mind. If you ever do decide to upload one and you still have issues with it then email me the avatar and I'll see if I can upload it on my profile. I hate mysteries.

Ah, so you're not a native of Berlin. I never had a chance to visit Poland. Cheers, I happen to like to know where people are from as it gives a scale to the community and how the Amiga unites (and sometimes divides) us.

@ Number 6:

That sounds like a good idea. I wasn't aware of any problems because mine worked the first time. I'll pass the suggestion up the chain of command. It would be nice to get to the bottom of the issue.

Cheers.

Edit: Suggestion submitted.

@Darrin

There are a lot of threads (and posts tucked inside other threads) on this topic.

Apparently we have a recent thread people could just post their issues to:

@Damocles

Is COS V what was originally being called COS2?
Or is COS2 still on the horizon?

I was lead to believe that COS2 would be released with the Commodore Amiga and would be a totally new OS.
COSV is still a Linux variant like COS1, according to the Commodore USA website.

Have asked you a couple of times now, do you have an answer?
You could at least just let me know if you don't know the answer.

Thanks

If Apple says it is IPod then it is IPod. It is not new concept not even in Amiga world. Eyetech did that, Elbox did that and in the end Cloanto is just selling rebranded WinUAE. AmigaOne keyboards you buy from AmigaKit are not "real" AmigaOne keyboards but standard parts with different looking keycaps. You can buy even official boing ball stickers if you dont have one already.

I dont understand why some people go berserk about this. It is just a name.

Don't see the point of this machine. I have downloaded the OS from Commodore US though to have a look.

How would you feel if you worked really hard to make a really good product, which everyone loved, and you were really proud of... and them somebody comes along, buys the rights to the name, sell substandard products at crazy products and makes your name the laughing stock of the IT world?

I think they have every right to be angry.

I am interested in finding out what the Commodore Amiga OS is like.

Is it in any way similar to an Amiga OS?

...or have they just used the name?

I have downloaded it but haven't installed it anywhere yet.

What I need is a small SSD to load it onto.

We

http://go.to/maug

have asked Leo to wander down and show us at some stage... but so far he hasn't done so (he lives a couple of kms up the road).

It's Linux Mint with a blue wallpaper.
Nothing whatsoever to do with AmigaOS. Hence why we all get so uppity about it. :)

So when I see this product I cant take it seriously it sports 2 licensed brands, off shelf parts, a $20 or so engraving and is not the product after which it is fashioned (licensed or not $$$ is way to high)

worst of all call it the Amiga 1000X is just another stunt trying to make it look like the real thing after all how similar is the name to another product called the AmigaOne X1000 is it? does it seem like another WorkBench5 steamer or just me?

Commodore has never said that their "Amiga" is a classic Amiga!
It is only people in the Amiga community that first say themselves that it is Classic Amiga.
Then they say that it's bad by Commodore that they call it the Classic Amiga and so on.

Still do not call his Commodore Amiga for Classic Amiga and will never do it.

But they want to be a continuation of the old Amiga but in about 20 years higher plane. what was the old Commodore made today with the Amiga?

Had they continued to build on 68k and with Workbench?
Had they gone over to the PPC and developed Workbench to PPC?
Had they gone over to x86, and developed a distro of Linux kernel?

Another company with enormous resources recently went over to x86, and using an OS that is based on a related Linux kernel!

There is a reason for the large rich company made his choice this way.

Would today's very little Commodore choose to do what the giant company did not choose to do?

Today's Commodore chose the same path as the Mac because it's the only way to go if there will be sales computers.

It is manufactured and assembled computers by thousands of companies around the world.
How should a small business be visible in the crowd?
Well, it does the same manner as all other small businesses that want to be seen, they develop products that do not look like everyone else and making them more exclusive. Besides the equipment, the price of such exclusivity factor. The name Amiga may cost a little more.
It's a smart strategy that will get Commodore to grow.

Before we complain, remember that after an extremely short time have developed products that really speed up the computer news sites around the world! They have received more publicity than what the major had during the same time. IT is well done!

Go back in time in the forum and read what was written most of the posts for the Commodore now and compare how it is now. Commodore has exceeded all expectations by light years.
That will be the next two years as well.

I also wish that I want to get satisfied. It's about the same things as everyone criticizes:
- There must be more about Amiga hardware and software!

I do not whine about it because I've seen what they can achieve and believe with all certainty that in two years here we are, therefore, more Amiga, Amiga, more feeling, more people think it's getting more Amiga, and many of the Amiga community that thinks The new Amiga is a continuation of the old Amiga.

I have deliberately refrained from writing about, The best is yet to come!

It's based on a brand new* compatible kernel called Exec SG (second generation). The rest of the components are either new or rewrites based on the original 3.1 sources which were cleaned up by Olaf Barthel. There are also native versions of some of the components that came with 3.5/3.9, such as Reaction and Amidock.

Basically its the same familiar OS but runs on more up to date hardware. It runs on much faster hardware and yet retains compatiblity with system friendly 68k apps.

*Well it was brand new about 9 years ago.

@linnar

There is no comparison between what Apple did and what CUSA have done so far regarding their choice of OS.

Apple constucted an OS based on UNIX.
CUSA just supplied a linux distro created by others.

Dell and the like have been doing that for many years, nothing ground breaking there.

"The best is yet to come!" hopefully not...

The Amiga at the beginning offered superior hardware and OS that no other system at the time had. Later on Commodore offered a lot of product for a reasonable price. At the end price and product were not competitive anymore.

So basically it was a unique package of hardware and OS with many innovations. I cannot see in the new "Amiga" anything innovative. Last week I bought a magazine with 2 distributions (Linux) that I can install on my computer. That is the same what your heroes did. But only paid 13 Dollar for it (the Magazine). Why should I or anyone else pay 2500 Dollar for such a system. Here you can buy computers even in supermarket. Why pay so much for it? Because of the sticker?

And regarding Apple... they have created a unique OS based on Linux kernel (similar projects for Aros are in development) and that is perfectly ok. Your company has only slightly changed a existing distribution and pretend that is their work. That is completely different.

Today there are different definitions regarding Amiga. The minimum for me is that it inherits the principles and APIs of the classic OS or is 68k (what is the case for Aros, AOS and MorphOS). And in my personal case I prefer Aros (Opensource, Standard Hardware). But that decides everyone for him- or herself.

In any case the "Amiga" has no amiga API so it is not an Amiga! And when you read the comments of users after the "news" you would see that all think that way. It is a PC with Linux and nothing unique so people compare prices and then decide against.

The only interesting thing to read about in this entire thread is that some people are having problems with Amigaworld avatars.

@ Linnar:

C=USA are trying to steal the Amiga name from an existing and active product line.

Whatever the old Commodore would have done with the Amiga certainly wouldn't have been x86. They had already done x86 machines without calling them Amigas because they were totally different beasts. You might recall the fact that they didn't feel the need to call the VIC-20 the PET-20, Neither did they call the C64 the VIC-64 and strangely enough they didn't call the Amiga the C64Amiga. Even they understood product confusion before putting the product on the market.

I can't wait for the day when C=USA try and tell the Linux crowd that their OS isn't called Linux anymore, it is CommodoreOS! I'll certainly grab the popcorn for that one.

Oh dear. Before you do any more writing, why don't you wait for the Amiga vapourware (because it doesn't exist) to acually ship. I look forward to seeing your review once you receive your new hardware. Just be sure to post it in the correct forum.
