Internet News   Internet News : Commodore Amiga Mini Pre Order Has Begun
posted by damocles on 21-Mar-2012 4:52:07 (44606 reads)
After 20 years since the last Commodore Amiga was released, the first new Commodore Amiga will be released by mid May, and this time in a Mini case. It comes with two options, barebones and fully loaded with i7 2600K [3.5GHz Quadcore] + nVidia 430 (with it's own discreet 1GB of RAM).

Full details can be found at CommodoreUSA.

Classic Amiga Amiga is correct for its time, current Amiga is a real Amiga for the future and none of them has to do with each other than the name.

True, as well as CUSA is none, just because of licence.
IIts great wall of US that you buy licence for name of franchise and you believe
you are master of universe.

Like you were replied millions of times, it would be nice if CUSA was leading Amiga (that is AmigaOS) x86 patth, but it isn`t

Also the reselling scheme looks like easy way to build a distro net, but:
a) Initally reseller has to buy 10 barebones, that is ~$3400 investment that
gives just the case and BD ROM drive. He also determines end price, good news is that every even smaller dealer can get config cheaper then CUSA offer, even with $340 loss over case + licencing costs CUSA will extra charge
b) There will be a confusion on model naming and will and how Mint support exactly all possible combinations
c) Its questionable whether you can resell COS which isn`t exact intellectual property of CUSA without agreement with Mint team
b) Since suppliers will deal with all guarantees CUSA name worldwide depends on their reliablity

Its kind of win win for CUSA (licence and COS fee, barebone profit) without any responsibility or support to end dealer or user. Imagine OS support will be up to each and every dealer.

Its at the same time MLM genious and very unreliable scheme for dealers and end customers, no quality testing or real support.

But we need to love Leos optimism

Why worry you of Commodore sales and how they plan to outsource part of the sale? Are you planning to be one of those helping to sell? If you are unable to participate, you do not worry, they do this nicely, you see.

I think you'd better tell Cloanto that.

They've managed to license the Amiga name, Kickstart ROMS and Workbench and they don't need to sell $3000 PCs to make a living.

Quite frankly, C=USA didn't need the Amiga name to start with and for all we know the reality might be that it costs them $1 per machine sold.

AmigaKit manages to operate as an Amiga hardware only company from an industrial estate in South Wales, employs several people and provides support all without the need to sell $3000 PCs.

I know what an Amiga is, and it isn't Linux and a sticker.

Why not licensed the companies you mention "Commodore" and "Amiga" or just "Amiga"?

Commodore sells / sold the cheap and expensive C64x. Best of them are selling the expensive model. Almost $ 3000 with SSD 600GB, more memory and a faster processor. The hard drive will cost cheapest Amiga Mini approximately $ 1,500

Selling Amiga Forever is only small part time business.

You are completely right. People like you that will take such favorable licences
should worry about their own earnings.

@ Itix:

Glad to see someone can Google or remembers me using my name in the past.

Mind you, it is amusing to see that those concerned are the ones who can't even show what country they're in.

That is how Terminills had the CMS setup to do, not by my choice.

@ Wawa

I'm not the one with the problem it seems.

Avatars and locations are not "showing off", they're expressions of personality and sometimes it is nice to know you have other users local to you (especially when you're trying to sell some old hardware/software). It also helps people to know that they're not talking to a native English speaker.

As someone who has been to Berlin several times, I'd think I'd be quite proud to put my location down. I loved the city.

He is trying to justify still high Amiga Mini price with i7,SSD and 16GB RAM by a parallel that C64x went to some level of better sales with extreme $2000 edition. Also because they don`t earn much on those SSD hard drives, just on basic model and CPU upgrade.

Original C64x specs were more of a nettop, so people did give extra cash to get the real difference of completely better specs (and likely a new C64x will be built out of Amiga Mini experience, its simple, just change the board).

With Amiga Mini base price is high even with drop of 500$.
Nice quick reaction, but will it save the day.
If CUSA cannot generate orders, how will local dealers (once they came to exist)?

okay, i tried once to put an avatar on my profile but it didnt work, i gave up. besides im not after meeting amiga fans in real life, the net is enough for me. and finally for berlin, i like to live here as it is my choice, but being proud of that? why should i be? this exactly is what i would think means showing off.

I think we have different ideas of "pride" and "showing" off. Anyway, have fun in Berlin as your local beer is miles better that what the Bud factories down here produce.

As for the avatar, if you decide to try again then note that the pitcure can only be 120x120 pixels max, plus it cannot exceed 6144 byes in size (so save it as a jpeg and crop the hell out of it).

My avatar is the full allowable size. No cropping needed.
I simply applied a mild gaussian blur, saved it, checked size (rinse and repeat) until it fell under the 6144byte range.

Basically the blur "helps" the .jpg algorithm in file size reduction.

@Darrin

Considering the vast number of posts on AW with users expressing difficulty with avatars, perhaps we should open an on-topic thread in the forum "Website feedback and suggestions".
